Ok, this is sort of a gross-out question, but there is a reason behind it.
Both my father and I have virtually non-existent BO. Dad never uses deodorant, just baby powder under his arms after bathing. I could do the same, but I don't like sweaty pits, so I use antiperspirant. We can both go 2-3 days without bathing without smelling bad! Not that I do that habitually, because I feel gross much sooner .
I used to think I just got lucky to inherit such good genes from dad, but now that I understand what it means to be a secretor or non-secretor, I think that ties into this picture. LR4YT I believe mentions how bacteria in the digestive system eat our blood antigens, and I figured that bacteria outside the body might do the same, and since bacteria cause BO, and non-secretors don't have the nutritious sweat that secretors have, maybe being a nonnie means less BO. (BTW, I don't know if dad is a nonnie, but maybe after seeing the results I will be better equipped to guess!)
Hey......24 hours....I stink. BUT....I use an herbal deoderant. Jason Jasmine, I believe is the brand. I don't regularly use the aluminum stuff. So, maybe that's why I stink a bit

Interesting idea. Both my DH and I are non-smelly people in general, although his hair gets greasy if he doesn't wash it every day. No foot odour, no bad perspiration smells. And I have an inconveniently sensitive sense of smell so I'm really aware of these things.
Unfortunately I don't know the secretor status of any of my friends and relatives in real life.
And that gives me an idea for another nonnie vs secretor poll. Give me a moment....
Note to self: I am me, and also an O-nonnie - I'm allowed not to fit the mould.

After many years of better eating, it is probably less than average. Before that, it probably was average to a lilttle above(as an adult). BTW, I don't notice BO or bad breath on other folks as much. I think we eat more fiber as a nation the past 20+ years, so we have better BMs, therefore less bad breath. I don't know if people shower more, as they did often in the past 40 years. But I just don't notice much BO anymore.
When we were small children, we weren't taught to bathe often. But no one said we were stinky. Good thing! That would be a bad memory. In high school, I started showering daily. As a young adult, I would stink if I didn't(or went past the 24 hours). So, I'm sure I was toxic to some degree. As I get older & my oily skin is more normal, I often soap the stinky areas & rinse the rest with water only. Like many folks nowadays, we shower in the morning. It gives more time to be publicly clean. Interesting topic! Mrs "T" O+

Mrs. T, I don't bathe my children more than twice a week except during the summer when they get very dirty (with real dirt) every day. I bathe the baby about once a week (I'm sure it'll be more than that when I start cloth diapering!!!)
I used to stink a lot as a teenager. When I was about 20 I learned about natural herbal deo and tried it, but it would "wear off" in a couple of hours! I had to alternate brands every other week or so just to keep them working. Then I started on the BTD and I don't smell anymore. Being a mommy with little ones, I don't always have the luxury of taking a shower every day [imagine standing in the shower with a baby sitting outside the door screaming, and your older children yelling at each other over a penny they found--it's better just to skip the shower]. Pre-BTD I woudn't have been able to do this! Now that my body is clean and non-toxic, I don't smell. In fact, my husband says I almost smell sweet. "Earthy" he calls it. "Herbal" my midwife calls it. Natural deos work now. I've been experimenting with baking soda, but it's a little harsh after a week or so, and my skin starts peeling. I've experimented with straight lavender oil, but the same thing happens. Baby powder has corn starch in it. No thanks.
Drive, I was tempted to give you a long sermon about the evils of aluminum in deodorants, but I'm sure you've already heard it all. So I won't bother.

This reminds me how the girls next door when I was a kid said they used to use beer for shampoo!!! I swear all kinds of weird things happened in the 70's.!!!!!

I voted little to none. I use herbal deodorant once in the AM, but if I forget no big deal. I have to work up a big sweat to smell. I attend exercise class after work and a normal routine doesn’t make me smell.
I remember people using beer to wash their hair in the 70’s also. Also milk and eggs were suggested. The egg brings out the red highlights in your hair.
Mrs T: When I was growing up my Dad said not to wash everyday because it removed essential oils.

I also have the oily hair. I always wash my hair with soap/shampoo when I shower. I soap up full-body every other shower, and just soap up my face and odor-prone areas on the other. I never have foot odor, unless I step in dog poo! All this has been true since long before beginning BTD. I have also been told that my natural smell is nice/pleasant.
I hear you Ribbit, I really should ditch that aluminum stuff. I'll get around to it eventually!

I didn't bathe my kids often when they were really little. When they played in dirt, I did. Then at a relatively early age, they took our example & showered regularly.[I certainly didn't have the energy or skill to bathe a child/baby. It is very tiring, & they needed their oils!!]
I think that beer would make a good rinse, not a cleaning agent. Of course, rinse with water afterwards.
Sometimes I put melaleuca(tea tree oil) on my underarms. If you are in a situation when you start stinking, wipe rubbing alcohol on your underarms. It probably isn't the healthiest thing, but will kill the germs. I quit the aluminum several years ago. I think I started needing deodorant at age 15. RL, how nice not to have to deal with that! Someday there may be a book about nonnies, explorers, etc & various tendencies. Cheerio, Mrs "T" O+

I never smelled any perspiration odor on myself until I was in my mid-thirties. At that time, I had been eating a "heavy vegetarian diet for 13 years. I was losing muscle tone and had put on several stubborn pounds. I continued with this foolishness for another 10 years before discovering the BTD.
My body odor has diminished to almost nothing. Only if I am extremely upset or anxious will I notice any aroma.
I'm careful to wash my armpits very well every morning, and I use a castile soap with a little tea tree oil in it, just for pits and feet. Then I spray with Benedetta brand The Best Deodorant. It's herbal extracts in organic grape alcohol. CLICK

Ribbit: I can laugh with you about your kids & not being able to take a shower. I do remember when it was a big ordeal to get the smallest chore done(like a shower or even just 'using the washroom'). I had non-sleepers & I used to need more sleep. I wish I knew more about diet then! As I reread this thread, I noticed the lack of BO problems. Yeah, another good reason to go BTD!!!!!!!!! I voted "little to none", which is how it's been for years, BUT, have noticed quite a significant odour increase since starting the Explorer diet. Detoxing, I suppose and/or hormone re-balancing in action. If I can ever get to maintaining high compliancy for a lengthy period of time, would be interesting to see what happens next with that.
Cider vinegar will soften and shine your hair too...but you'll smell like a salad if you get caught in the rain!
As for BO, it depends on what I'm eating. Since going veggie six months ago (type A), my BO has been mild. I can even go days without a shower...er, useful on a camping trip. Before BTD, it was terrible.
Okay, here's something totally unrelated that was in yesterday's "human interest" section of the paper:
"I overheard my two young daughters talking to each other in front of my vanity table. My 5-year-old was explaining to my 3-year-old what all of the items were and how Mommy used them. She talked about lipstick and perfume and lotion. Then she picked up my deodorant and very seriously said: 'And this is what Mommy uses to grow hair under her arms.'"
Prior to the BTD i had BO but i wouldn't say it was bad. I also used to use the standard store bought aluminum based deodorants. Around the same time i started the BTD i also started to use a natural aluminum free deodorant. I used the deodorant for awhile then noticed that my BO was almost non-existent without the deodorant. Soo though i hate to admit it, i hardly ever use deodorant. I use it on occasions like when i'm going out for the night or on really hot days. I think mostly the BTD is the reason that i hardly have BO, though the natural deodorant may have something to do with it too.

Actually, before I started the BTD I couldn't use either natural deodorants or natural shampoos. I'd get terrible build-up in my hair and have to resort to chemical shampoos to get it all out. The natural deos just didn't work and I'd have to rotate them often. Now I can use everything natural (in fact, I try my best not to use anything on my body that I can't pronounce without hesitation). I think I'll try beer in my hair. It's pretty coarse.
Mrs. T, there was one evening when I'd had "one of those days" and my husband came to the table, sat down and--bless his caring heart--said, "So, what did you do today?" I sat stunned and wide-eyed a second, debating whether to burst into tears or go off into a tirade about how underappreciated mothers are, then I looked at my beautiful family and grinned, "Yippeeee!" I shouted, "I got dinner on the table!" Everybody clapped and hollered and I felt very proud of myself.
