I've always known about my having shoveled incisors, and I believe this is a Nomad trait, but how many of you out there have shoveling as well?  I've heard that this trait is rare in Caucasians (or at least Northern Europeans) and that Northern Euros tend to have the cusp of Carabelli.

I thought everyone's teeth were shaped like that til I read the GTD book! Yup, I've got 'm. That Carabelli's cusp sounded so familiar, but dental work has rendered it a mystery for the ages...

Oh, wow, look at all the different Types that it occurs in!

Where your top front incisors have a slight scooping-out on the inside.

Thank you.  I definitely have a scoop!  In fact this is the area the hygienist tells me my green tea stains usually occur!

Quoted from wikipedia

In humans
Humans normally have eight ( 8 ) incisors, two of each type. The types of incisors are:

maxillary central incisor
maxillary lateral incisor
mandibular central incisor
mandibular lateral incisor

The central incisors are what everyone is refering to, but there are 8 total.

I also have 4 front shoveling teeth, don't know about the cusp of Carabelli yet, I would guess no though.

When I first read the term "shoveling," I assumed that I knew what it meant, until I looked at the illustration in the book.

I first thought that it meant teeth where the back surface was shaped like you'd hold your fingers if you had to use them to scrabble in the dirt (i.e., curved about a horizontal axis).  But the illustration looks like the curvature is the other way, as though you took that hand with the partly-curled fingers and held it as though you were about to bang your fist on the table (i.e., curved about a vertical axis).

If that second take is correct (and please let me know if it isn't!), then I have no shoveling and, in any case, no extra cusps.

I had an extra-easy time of it, by the way, getting a look at my teeth.  Years back, the dentist made full plaster models of my teeth, and Hubby's too, then when he had no further use for them, gave them to us.  So I just opened up the box and looked!  (Hubby doesn't have shoveling or extra cusps either.)

I have shoveling, and most all the other Melungeon traits. I'm a A, not sure if secretor, not sure yet of Genotype. From descriptions, I sound like a Teacher, but will do all the tests to be sure.

I always assumed that shovel-shaped was how everyone's teeth were...that that was just the natural shape of them
