Hi Guys!

I was just reviewing my Swami list and noticed that I was allowed 3 portions of fruits of day, but also have an allowance of 2 glasses of beverages a day, which include fruit juices.

Now I wonder, doesn't fruit juice contains the same nutrients as a piece/portion of real fruit? I always assumed that the 3 portions of fruits included fruit juice...

How do you understand it?

Also, cranberry juice is a diamond for me, but there's always either sugar or additives which are avoids for me in them here in the UK.... Do you have Explorer compliant cranberry juices in the US?

Thanks for your help!

R.W.Knudsen has a line of juices called "Just" whatever. There's "just cranberry; just tart cherry, several others.  Need to make sure it is this line or you'll get one with sugar or other additive.

The juice and the fruit are different by what is left behind in the pulp when you juice a fruit. That will be mostly fiber but also some of the other nutrient value of the fruit.

You might have luck finding Cranberry syrup/extract that is 100% pure. Then you can sweeten your own juice with the agent of your choice.

Whole foods are always better for you.  Juice is not a whole food.

I was having urinary tract infections a lot and need to input a goodly amount of cranberries into my poor old body to prevent recurrences.  I put raw whole cranberries in our morning smoothie/milkshakes.  Then I add concentrated pineapple juice for sweetener....knowing that it is NOT whole pineapple.  However, I hate stevia and can't digest whole pineapple.

There are always some trade offs.

I use pure cranberry concentrate made in the U.S. by Dynamic Health. No additives. Must be kept in the fridge from the moment of opening for maximum 45 days . Gets rotten very easily.

So why do I have 2 glasses of them a day in addition to real fruits on my Swami?

That's what I don't understand....

The way I see it, you are just allowed to have them, and it will still be fine.

This is my SWAMI superfood beverages list:

Beet Juice
Blueberry Juice
Cabbage Juice
Celery Juice
Cranberry Juice ◊
Elderberry Juice ◊
Ginger Root Tea ◊
Grapefruit Juice
Green Tea, Kukicha, Bancha ◊
Kombucha Tea ◊
Lemon and Water ◊
Milk, Almond
Milk, Rice
Noni Juice
Pineapple Juice
Prune Juice
Seltzer Water
Watermelon Juice ◊
Yerba Mate Tea

The list includes beverages of all sorts, vegetable juices, fruit juices, a selection of teas, even Seltzer Water, i.e., beverages from various food sources that vary in many respects.

I believe SWAMI does not expect you to have cranberries and cranberry juice in the same day. Just for you to know that it is beneficial for you in both forms, and any of them is a good option for you per your choice.

I seldom have cranberry juice per se. My most frequent beverages are lemon water (1 glass), green tea (4 glasses), and kombucha tea (half a glass). I use cranberry concentrate daily in cooking meat and turkey - and in membrosia.

... can't digest whole pineapple.

Even you state in the same post that whole foods are not always better...

Finding what works for each individual is best.  There are some people who don't handle large amounts of fiber well, so the whole food may not be as good for them as just the juice.  It may also be that a specific person, some foods are better than the juice while other foods the juice is better than the whole food...

Most "cranberry juice" found in the regular supermarkets in the USA also contain additives; often sugar or HFCS, but the occasional product is mixed with apple juice.  The natural foods stores, however, carry 100% cranberry juice. It's rather expensive as compared to the supermarket version, but that's  because it's not diluted with cheaper ingredients!

At this time of year it is easy to get hole of fresh cranberry, you can make your own additive free juice from them very easily. you can also freeze then for the rest of the year.

You can also buy pure cranberry juice powder and use that either in a capsule or adding to foods.
