hello -

I am having a rough time trying to stop eating dairy.  I am on day 6 dairy free and I feel not very good.  It doesn't help that I keep telling myself Swami gives me ghee and parmesan as diamonds....help!  I know the dairy isn't good for me but still I am finding this so hard.

Is there any reason you're not eating ghee? Ghee is pretty much devoid of the problematic milk proteins, yet very high in beneficial milk fats. I wonder if you're craving dairy because you need the nutrients found in ghee.

I don't know about ghee.  I have tried it in the past and it set off cheese cravings for me - I do have some that I made myself though.  I am so fed up.  What is weirder is that I seem to drop weight when I eat parmesan, butter and ghee but I feel really UGH after consuming it that I just decide to go dairy free.

This is an indication that with the weight loss is detoxification of some junk that really sets you back.  The best thing you can do for you is to go ahead and get rid of the junk - although you may have to do it rather slowly so you can continue to get things done...  So reduce the amount of parmesan, butter, and ghee you eat so you are still able to do things, but understand that while you are cleaning / healing this "whatever", that you will feel less than ideal and probably have less energy for exercise, etc. as it takes quite a bit to do the cleaning.

There have been so many discussions over the years about dairy addiction.  I would hope you could search the forum to read what I've written because my addiction to dairy is pretty insane.  Not sure of
the thread titles, but I remember doing a lot of research that proves the insidious chemical reactions
some people have to dairy, as if it's a drug as powerful as heroin.  Trust me, I know what you're feeling
and saying...It's very real.  I can only say "bite the bullet" and move forward....drink plenty of water
and get adequate minerals.  Stay strong and do not go back and eat any dairy.  Good job for
making it to day #6.  It usually takes me 3-4 days to totally get over my addiction to dairy.

Try to eat your very favorite beneficial foods as much as you can and try to focus on these foods
being your medicine. Getting past these next few days takes perseverance.  I know how powerful
the lure can feel to want more dairy.  It's tough to overcome this addiction.  Every now and then I go back to eating a little dairy, only to find myself wanting it the next day, and the next until I turn up in a supermarket loading my cart with cheese, yogurt and addictive dairy products.  Like an alcoholic, I walk around on  the day I decide "no more" with a terrible withdrawal headache.  The withdrawal for me is as bad as the addiction can become.  I feel confused, depressed and overwhelmed trying to get myself through the dairy detox.

I have to take many different homeopathic remedies for headaches until this passes....douse my body with magnesium oil and hopefully, within a few days, I get to the other side....where dairy is forgotten and my brain chemicals find their way to a normal balance point again.

Dairy tips my brain chemicals initially into euphoria....I am superwoman....happy beyond normal
happiness and suddenly, the withdrawal and crashing as if I'm bi-polar (although I am not) is
combined with a severe headache and the desire for my drug of choice.  More cheese.  Cheese
oddly enough stops my headache and withdrawal symptoms in minutes.  Be careful of falling
into this pattern.

Just sayin' that this is very real....and the only solution is to remember the experience of addiction,
withdrawal and forget what your SWAMI says about parmesan...

I feel safer on ghee. I would recommend that you only use ghee.  I get yogurt, manchego and ghee
as beneficials and about 8 neutral hard cheeses but they're all super addictive.  No bad addiction with manchego or ghee.  I seem to be able to eat one portion of either without wanting more. I know when I've eaten parmesan for dinner, I wake up in the morning, put cheese in an omelette and by lunch time, all I want is a grilled cheese sandwich.
By mid afternoon, I'm craving more cheese and am likely to eat yogurt....This continues until I
pull my own dairy plug.

I have no addictions to any foods except cheese.   And I realize my own mother couldn't go a single
day without cheese or else she was getting angry and beating up her children.  My sister can't go
a day without cheese and neither can her daughter.  Some of us are just like this....our brains and
gut brains are addicted to diary.

I eat my week's allotment of dairy in one day, as a "carb/starch" in order to make sure I don't slip. I try to eat it on Sunday or a day that I'm celebrating. AS I upped my intake of calcium citrate to a normal level, the need for dairy went away as I explored more creative things to do with veggies, dressings and salads.

do eat it, don't eat it.  I don't know what to do anymore.  Swami has me all confused.  Thanks for the thoughtful input though everybody.  Will somebody please ask Dr D'Adamo if he will kindly put a casein intolerance box in the next Swami?  Thanks!  Because I have no way of knowing what I should be doing.  If my casein intolerance only relates to avoid dairy or if it would be the whole lot.

I will ask Dr. D when I go to the clinic in August about casein.  My feeling is that some people will
be able to eat every food on their beneficial list with more time to heal their gut, but some people aren't there yet....so if you're not there, I'd be cautious of eating more dairy than you
feel you can tolerate, especially if you feel that "addictive" quality..  I have casein listed as a toxin....however dairy protein, aka casein is in many cheeses that are neutral for me.

My best advice is to avoid dairy for awhile longer, or do what I try to do.....eat cheese in tiny
amounts and not two meals or even two days in a row.  I find if I eat a small piece of manchego
once a week, I'm fine.  More than that....I am craving cheese like an addict.  Ghee I can eat
more often.  Doesn't seem to bother me.

Some people need to be very cautious about consuming foods that don't feel perfectly suited to their individual constitutions.  

Your reactions to cheese might get better with time....but in my personal experience after many
years eating for my blood type and now my SWAMI, my tolerance for cheese is still very very poor.

I made the decision nearly a year ago, to eliminate all dairy except ghee from my diet.  It causes some problems for me and I've suspected for years that I would do better without it, but like Chloe, I have lived with a major dairy addiction all my life.  I was pretty scared actually, at the idea of giving it up.  I did suffer quite a bit mentally and emotionally the first few days.  After a week, I was rejoicing because my body was thanking me!  

But ghee is the essential factor in making it possible for me.  I eat a couple of tsp/day, which is more than my SWAMI recommends, but choices like this are an individual matter and we have to get to know our own bodies.  Ghee meets those dairy needs for me, keeps my digestion healthy and satisfies any potential dairy cravings.

Make sure you are making it correctly, Loops.  Some people make clarified butter, thinking that it is the same as ghee.  Ghee simmers for a longer time and ends up being more of a pure butter oil, thus less likely to cause problems for people with dairy intolerances.

From a fellow O-non; I only crave cheese/dairy when I'm low on Magnesium.  And I crave it hard.  Otherwise I have zero interest in the stuff.  Might be worth looking into.

Also, milk is a source of iodine, which Dr D writes about being important for O's.

Applies to me exactly! The only time I eat cheese (mozzarella, superfood ) now is in a dish I cook when my youngest son and his wife come for the weekend - which averages around every 5 or 6 weeks. It is her favorite and my son loves it too. I also put the tiniest bit of tomato in it which is supposed to be a neutral for me, and that is the only time I eat it. I don't like going around with the stomachache for three days on a regular basis!

hhmm well interesting as I already take magnesium supplements, and also as dairy is famously LOW in magnesium and high in calcium.  Cheese even more so....maybe it was the calcium and not the magnesium you needed?

we all suffer from addictions.. some need to be right all the time, some must feel superior, some need to adhere to rules that don't matter, and some eat icecream..

I rather suffer the last addiction than all the others.. But I do restrict me from eating cream only when I am out of the house and in small portions only.. a treat instead of the main meal.  And if I get a belly ache so be it-- my fault! I gladly endure.. and never blame BTD...

I am in no way suggesting you go wild.. but Dr. D. does say we can go 80% or better, so why not listen to him?  I eat 95% better than before I learned about BTD.

I used to eat blueberries for ten year according to BTD, and then it became avoid on BTD.. so did I do damage? maybe? or not? 5%.... good enough, I have no fear.

My 95% is good enough, with it my place in heaven is secure.. haha ..

.....I do not expect to see 'perfectionists' in heaven..... hahaha  


Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!

I wonder if it's not that dairy doesn't have Calcium (which it does) but that it's not absorbable...

I know for myself, when I eat a lot of dairy (even beneficial dairy), I have to supplement more Magnesium so that I don't experience leg/foot cramps.

I keep reading that especially from vegans that dairy actually blocks mineral absorption, but since I broke my wrist, I'm craving dairy for bone healing. Not spinach..or kale.. Weird. I take multi minerals and about 500 mg of calcium..plus tums if needed for AR and I still crave dairy during this healing.

one thing is for sure though - parmesan is the only cheese that doesn't set my eczema off!  All the other cheeses do it, so there is something to this Swami.  Butter seems to be fine too.  I am making more ghee - I leave it until the solids go brown and then drain it - I assume that is long enough?  

BTW, off subject - but does anybody know how Lucuma is rated in BTD? It is an orange starchy fruit that grows in Peru and we get it frozen here in Chile.  It is the ONLY non-sweetened frozen fruit I can find apart from blueberries and raspberries - it is DELICIOUS.  It comes as a puree and I eat it out of the packet.  It is supposed to be used for making deserts and cakes etc but I just eat it as is.

Depends on the cheese...this list seems to show some cheeses are very high in calcium, others lower.

If I start wanting "something" that I can't figure out exactly what, I don't load up on stuff trying to satisfy the "craving" - I just eat a good-sized piece of ginger, and the feeling immediately goes away. This hardly ever happens to me now, but I always keep ginger handy! Can't say that I actually crave any particular food anymore, though.

Yes, that's plenty long enough.  I like to remove mine from the heat when the sediment is dark golden, like butterscotch color.  When the sediment is still white, that's not long enough.
