Always been confused by this, so I thought I'd ask the forum. Now that I'm watching servings like a hawk, thought I'd get clarification. For Vege Proteins, my SWAMI says the following:
It makes no mention at all about all the beans that are listed in my SWAMI. So, what is this telling me exactly? I can have as many beans as I can stomach and to only limit the nuts, seeds, nut butters to 8 servings? Or to limit all vege proteins, including beans, nuts, seeds, and nut butters to 8 servings?
And, since there is no serving size for beans, what is the recommended serving size? Is it completely up to me to decide? Currently, I've been going with about 3/4 cup cooked (or 1/2 block of tofu), somewhere around 150-200 calories. Been doing this daily, in addition to daily intake of 1/4 cup of nuts. But, that would be 14 servings from this category.

8 is a total for all types. So if you have 7 servings of beans in a week you would have one serving left. That one could be seeds, nuts, or nut butter.
There is only speculation about the portion size of beans and whether it is dry or cooked.
We do know that if a serving size was given for beans it would vary for users. For instance, my vegie protein portion size is "Nuts, Seeds: half cup; Nut Butters: 2 tablespoons"

What I have been doing this week (my first week of a 65 pound weight loss goal) is consuming 1/4 cup of nuts daily and 3/4 cup of beans or 1/2 block of tofu. In less than a week, I've dropped 5 pounds. So, not too worried at the moment about 8 versus 14 servings of vege proteins. However, I refuse to sit and eat half a jar of natural peanut butter like I've done many times in the past. What is that, like around 2000 calories? Yikes!

Yes, I was shocked to learn that only 2 TBS of almond butter has 180 calories! Just stopping the "dipping" into the almond butter jar has halted the weight gain I was experiencing.
Good luck with your weight loss goals, Adam! It sounds like you are taking a sensible and healthy approach.
