Does anyone know for sure when baking with flour, would the portion size be 1/4 cup flour per porportion? For example: If I want to make buckwheat pancakes for only me and do not want left overs, would a portion size be 1/4 cup of buckwheat or 1/8 (2 Tablespoons)? |

The general rule is 1/4 cup flour is one serving. Check your SWAMI to see if your own personal serving size varies from the norm.
For example, I get 1 serving of fruit per day, while my daughter gets 3. But my fruit servings are only half a cup while hers are a full cup- so she actually get 6 times as much fruit as I do, not 3 times. Our portion sizes of cheese is also different- she gets 4 ounces (a protein source) while I only get one ounce (a condiment.) |

I appreciate your response. But why can't someone simply answer the question?
When dealing with one serving size, do we use 1/4 cup of dry flour or 1/2 of that amount which would be 2 tablespoons? |

Thanks, Ruthiegirl. I just now read your response. Mine is not a weight issue but rather the grains are aggravating my infectious arthritis.... even my Beneficials when overdone! I'm no longer consuming my Neutrals.
My pain goes completely away when grains are not eaten. But SWAMI says I should have 3 servings a day. I'm apprehensive to abstain from grains completely because I may hurt/deprive myself in other ways THAT ONLY SWAMI knows.
This is why I want to 'nail down' these portion sizes so that I can experiment intelligently.
I appreciate feedback from any others that may want to comment. Thank you. |

What does your SWAMI say about the size of a grain portion?
Here's what my SWAMI says:
Portion Size: Grains, Cereals: quarter cup; Baked Goods: 1/2 muffin; 1 slice bread
Here's what my daughter's SWAMI says:
Portion Size: Grains, Cereals: half cup; Baked Goods: 1/2 muffin; 1 slice bread
I would consider 1/4 cup of flour to be "one portion" of grains for me, but 1/2 cup of flour would be "one portion" for her. That's why I asked you to check the portion size in your SWAMI. |

Then 1/4 cup of flour is one portion. |

Here's what my SWAMI says:
Portion Size: Grains, Cereals: quarter cup; Baked Goods: 1/2 muffin; 1 slice bread
Here's what my daughter's SWAMI says:
Portion Size: Grains, Cereals: half cup; Baked Goods: 1/2 muffin; 1 slice bread
Hmm, strange that the "Baked Goods" amounts match but the "Grains, Cereals" don't. But, for what it's worth, mine says: Portion Size: Grains, Cereals: half cup; Baked Goods: 1 muffin; 2 slices breadGo figure!
My pain goes completely away when grains are not eaten. But SWAMI says I should have 3 servings a day. I'm apprehensive to abstain from grains completely because I may hurt/deprive myself in other ways THAT ONLY SWAMI knows.
I don't claim to be an expert, but in that case, my suggestion would be to err on the side of eating less. Perhaps your body knows better than SWAMI. (Hmm, does anybody's SWAMI actually say to cut out all grains?) |

Nope, I don't think any SWAMI says no grains- or no dairy for that matter, yet many of us do best without dairy products either. |
