Just got the results of my secretor test, Im a nonnie. I'm shocked, with only 20 % of the population being non secretors in the US, it sure looks like there are just as many nonnies in the forums as secretors. Are these stats outdated? Anyhow, many drastic changes were made in my swami diet! Starting all over again! I don't understand how Almonds and Almond butter can be listed as SuperFoods and now Almond Milk is an Avoid, whereas it used to be a superfood. Can somebody please explain this? By the way I make homemade almond milk with soaked raw almonds. |

It's the commercial stuff with all that junk in it that we can't have.

It is possible that there is some component that is concentrated in the milk. I know there was a thread recently about this... http://www.dadamo.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-GC/m-1347895768/s-all/ |

It has nothing to do with what's available commercially. My SWAMI gives me rice milk as a superfood and almond milk as an avoid; my daughter's has rice milk as an avoid and almond milk as compliant (I forget if it's neutral or beneficial.) I can't find commercial almond milk OR commercial rice milk that's 100% compliant- so, for a while, I was making both rice and almond milk regularly.
There's something about the way your body uses the nutrients in rice or almonds when it's blended with water and the fiber is strained away to make milk- some nutrients are concentrated while others are removed.
If you make almond milk by blending almond butter with water, it should be OK- since all the fiber is still there. Just watch your body for reactions- you may still react badly to "almond butter milk" even if all the ingredients are compliant and nothing is strained away. Your body may have difficulty digesting the almonds in this form, but for most people this is OK. |

I make nut milks with soaked nuts and then just add water and put in Vitamix. No straining. I wonder if that would be the same value as almonds and water? Interesting. |

ofcourse a glass of almond milk would be about a serving of nuts no?
I reckon a handful of nuts make a glass of milk...... my opinion is to watch frequency values given and you are good to go, if trying to loose weight |

It's the gums. The only commercial non-dairy drink my kid and I can tolerate is rice milk because it has no gums.
Same with the gums (xanthan) in GF bread. If I have more than a couple of pieces in a 24 hour period, I get symptoms that are worse than if I had gluten bread. |

You found a rice milk without any gums or stabilizers (carageenan)? |

It's probably more a matter of nonnies having greater difficulties with their health by middle age that we are in higher proportion here than in the general population. |

It's pretty basic. I don't have it on me, but I know I don't react to it, and I react to gums pretty strongly. |

Ah, Thanks. I see it's the safflower oil that ruined it for me. |

Yeah, safflower oil is an "avoid" for me as well, but I don't react badly to small amounts of avoid oils. Those gums cause a LOT of uncomfortable GI symptoms though. I usually make my own rice milk or do without, but I also keep a few boxes (8oz size) of rice dream in the pantry in case I need it for a recipe and don't have the time or energy to make my own. It also came in handy when we didn't have electricity for 9 days and I couldn't use my blender. |
