Hi Everyone,
I have been away from the forum for some time. Hope you are all well.
I just had a realization that I may have entered the wrong information in my Swami with regards to Ethnicity. My Father is a Spanish Basque (pure) my Mother on the other hand is part Asian on her Mothers side. My Mother says that her Grandmother was half Spanish and half chinese. And she concludes that her Mother (my Grandmother) is 1/4 th Chinese. Which makes her 1/8 th Chinese and makes me 1/16th Chinese (Is that really the way it works?)
My Question is...Does that make me Eurasian?
I originally chose Southern European as my Ethnicity and that makes me an Explorer. But as a Eurasian I am 40% Teacher. There is also the other option of Hispanic which I consider to be anyone of Spanish descent as oposed to Latino which is most of South and Central America and Miami ofcourse...he he he.
I would appreciate any help on this,
Jumari |

Hi, Jumari. I am rather new here. I didn't know whether to check northern, western or central Europe. My mother was English, Irish, Dutch, German, and Castellian (spelling?) Spanish. My dad is half German and half Swedish. I tried checking each and there was only a 1 point difference in my Swami and it didn't change my food list. |

If you could get your DNA Haplogroups that might be a better approach. If memory serves, Basque has some interesting variations. |

Hi D.L.....I guess that makes you a well rounded European.
Thanks Lloyd. Whats involved in that that DNA test? is it just a blood tes?. I wonder if that is available in Australia?
I am still searching for an answer with regards to whether or not I am classified as a Eurasian consideing that the mix came from 3 generations ago and since then its been purely Basque on both sides.
I wonder if anyone else might know about those interesting variations you mentioned Lloyd?

There are various entities that will do the haplogroups. National Geographic does a swab test. C_sharp has posted information on other venues for testing. You might try a forum search over the past 60 or 90 days using haplogroup and his member name to pull up the information. Some of it was in a thread called 23 and me, or something similar. The Spanish heritage would be the primary influence for ancestry purposes. |

I just signed up for the National Geographic haplogroup test. It cost $99 +S&H. A female can do the maternal test only. A male can do either, I guess, but each costs separately. I typed in National Geographic haplogroup in my web browser and the page came up to read describing it. There were also comments from users. I decided to do it before I changed my mind. Just typing in haplogroup in the web browser gave me too many options, so I went with Nat. Geographic. |

Jumari - Just out of curiosity, (I love to learn new things) I looked in Wikipedia online to see what I could find out about Castilian Spanish and Basque Spanish. Wow. There is some connection but more information than I can digest. Makes for interesting reading, though. |

I assume what you mean by this that I should choose Hispanic as my Ethnicity? D.L. Yes there are even theories that claim that the Basques are direct descendants of the Neanderthals. Could be the reason why there are so many Basques with negative blood types. |

I think there's a thread currently going on that. |

No, I mean the appropriate European entry. Hispanic is a racially diverse category that is more correlated to speaking Spanish than of having Spanish ancestory. Someone else may correct me, but I believe Hispanic would not be appropriate for you despite the etymology of the name. |

I was just looking at the link below as I always considered the term Hispanic to be a reference to someone from Spain and Latinos for people belonging to spanish speaking countries. But I have just learned that it has become an american term for latinos. I guess I am Southern European after all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HispanicHi cajun what an interesting mix you have. Do you know which native american tribe you were from? |

Latino can refer to person who speaks a Latin-based language, not just Spanish. Hispanic can refer to any Spanish speaking person. It gets tricky when Native Americans from Spanish speaking countries in the Americas get classified as Hispanic, even though their first language is NOT Spanish. I would tick Western European for Castillian and Basque Spanish, not Southern European. Maybe it is both, though. |

Hey there O...You are 100% right latinos are those who speak latin based languages including Italian and French and even Rumanian I assume. Even though I don't think the French would like to be rfefered to as Latinos...maybe I'm wrong. I didn't know that native Americans get classified as Hispanics, now that doesn't make any sense.
The thing that coonfuses me even more is that Filipinos who were under Spanish rule for more than 300 years are not considered Hispanic. Being born and raised in the Philippines whenever the term Hispanic was used it was strictly for us Spaniards. Its curios to me how the Filipinos didn't take on Spanish as their national language even thoug there are a large number of Spanish words in Tagalog.
But now you have just brought up another distinction. I think you must be right too as Southern Europe is probably refering to Greece. Even though Spain being so closee to the African continent could also be classified as Southern European.
Thank you so much for your help...

Latinos are people from Latin America, sorry......
I could be considered a Latina, cause I live here, but alas, my genetic makeover is all central European.......
I have no Hispanic blood ......besides, Latino is NOT an option, for ethnicity, not even in swami PRO, where we get to input more detailed data in some instances.

In the USA, Latino generally means Hispanic (someone from a Spanish speaking country in Latin America). It's funny, though, how we think of Latino/Latina strictly as Spanish speaking. Not all countries in Latin America are Spanish in language. I think it gets very confusing for census purposes, not to mention mixes - what does a person check then? I would like to get my haplogroup too, maybe this year. I wonder whether it will have as great an impact on swami as blood type, measurements and secretor status. Whether I choose western European or northern European, there is very little difference in my percentage of genotype, and no difference in foods. I haven't tried playing with that lately, however. |

Hi O Hi O...if you sat it twice ....its off to work we go....la la la. I hope you don't mind my Neanderthal humor. The way i see it is that Spain is in south western Europe. I get an extra explorer point if I choose western instead of southern as my Ethnicity though, so I'll go with that. |

I'm a little disappointed. My Nat. Geographic haplogroup test was supposed to be mailed to me today. I got an email this morn that said it is on backorder because so many people had ordered it. I could cancel if I want, but I guess I'll wait. I am so curious. |

Wow Cajun...I've just alway had this inexplicable kinship and respect for North American Indians almost as though I had been one myself in a past life.
D.L. Good luck with the test...you might as well wait a little longer. I'm still wondering whether or not it would be worth it for me. It would take even longer from Australia. I'm 37% Explorer....would the haplogroup test make me a 38% Explorer? is it worth it. I would do it if a certain resut would convincingly make me a definite genotype and not a borderline one like I am now. |

Jumari - I called them yesterday, after a lot of thought, decided to cancel the order for now. They don't know when I would receive the kit. I pretty much know what I need to know, anyway, because: 1.We have traced our family ancestry back a long, long, way. 2.I know I'm at least 50% Explorer and A- secretor, which, along with years of experience, the IgG test results, and Swammi, pretty much lets me know what I should avoid 3.I don't know if the haplogroup would help me know that much more, to be worth the $115 I would have to spend on it. I may change my mind at a later time, but for now I let it go, since it is on backorder. Like you, I wonder if the haplogroup test would make me more of a definite genotype. |

DL, 50% is pretty high. It seems many people fall in the 40 to 55 percentage.
I am sort of like Jumari, I want to know my haplo just to see if it makes a difference. I am only 41% teacher and if I change one item in swami (leg opening) I am 39% explorer. Well, I know I identify with several explorer traits but have just that little bit more in common with teacher. I guess it would just be good to know if the haplo would push me more one way or the other.
I am waiting due to finances and now that I know about the backorders. |
