Somewhere, I have read that walnut oil has a high content of Omega 6.

I was a little concerned after seeing that chart comparing different kinds of oil.

I used to use EVOO for my salad dressing. But for a few months I got hooked on walnut oil. It has a distinct aroma that is unmatched by EVOO. But the Omega 6 content--should I be concerned about it? I use the oil quite liberally on my salad, rougly 2 tbsp a day. Would that mess up my system (for lack of a better word)?

P.S. Walnut oil is a diamond food on my SWAMI and ooops, I'm allowed only 1 tbsp a day!

I love walnut oil too (I remember suggesting La Tourangelle when you first bought some ).  I go by omega ratio rather than just total amount of 3 and/or 6.  Walnut oil has 1404mg om3 and 7141mg om6 per tbs.  It is a good bit of om6, but the ratio is is about 1:5.  Olive oil has 103mg om3 and 1318mg om6 per tbs and a ratio of about 1:13 so walnut oil has much more om3 overall and much more om3 as compared to om6.

Like I said, I go by ratio, but I do try to use other oils as well just because walnut is so high in om6.  Can you have macadamia oil?  It rocks (tastewise) and has 136mg om3 and only 387mg om6 (1:3) ratio.  Hemp oil has an even better ratio, but is just as high overall in om6 as walnut oil is (and the flavor is rather bitter so it takes some getting used to).  I don't really think it's anything to worry about, especially since walnut oil is a diamond for you; maybe just cut back on the amount some (although I think the swami oil recommendations are low anyway).

Hope that helps at least somewhat

Thanks Brinyskysail. That's very helpful information. Yes, I took your advice and bought La Tourangelle and fell in love .

I can have macadamia oil but it is only a Neutral. I have tried hemp oil before but didn't like the taste and cost!

I guess maybe I can alternate between EVOO and walnut oil and not worry too much. The SWAMI oil recommendations do tend to be on the low side. I feel better with more fat in my diet

I really don't think it will be a problem, especially if you're getting omega3 from other sources like fish.

I think you are right on that. I checked some canned fish and not only are the ratios very favourable to Omega 3 but you would consume a much larger portion as well.

Example:

Brunswick Herring and Sardines: 1.5 gm.3 - 0.2 gm. 6    Ratio 7.5 : 1   3 to 6

I assume roughly the same sort of ratio would follow for other Fatty Fish.

Go ahead and enjoy the walnut oil on your salads (though maybe cut back to 1 tablespoon per day) and make sure to have some fish oil (via supplements or a nice portion of fatty fish) as well to round out the ratios.

I like it way more that olive oil too! I just can't get myself to love olive oil. I also take fish oil though.
