I was drinking a Metagenics shake from my Naturopath's office and for months was feeling bloated, fatigued and not myself.  I had an IgG test done and soy was not one of my allergens.  In the Metagenics shake, soy was the first ingredient.  I decided to stop the shake and I slowly started feeling better.  My ND gave me Designs for Health Phosphatidyl Serine Powder to help get my sleeping pattern back in order.  I have to buy a new container and tonight I was looking at the ingredients and it says "from 1000 mg of Soy Lecithin."  Do you think this would bother me?

Soy lecithin is still kind of a confusing issue for me. I've asked about it on this site but am still confused. SWAMI just confuses me more. I've scanned the archives here on this site. I think Heidi said it was fine, but SWAMI still says it's an avoid (granules). Plain lecithin is neutral in the condiments area. I'm not sure what the difference is.

Massive confusion.

Lola, I looked at my Swami and under condiments it says Lecithin is a neutral for me.  It doesn't say soy lecithin though.  I have my compliant shake from Dr. D but right now I am healing my gut and egg whites are an allergen for me.

You probably are not going to be comforted with my response.

The SWAMI entry for "Soybean Granules, Lecithin", I do not think is for Lecithin at all.

I checked the internal data in SWAMI (this is not possible in SWAMI Xpress).

"Soybean Granules, Lecithin" has no choline at all. Which is one of the major reason one uses Lecithin.

All nutrient values for "Soybean Granules, Lecithin" appear to be identical to "Soybean Meal"

Assuming that this is the case everyone should have the same rating for "Soybean Granules, Lecithin" and "Soybean Meal"

The data appears to be for soybean meal and not be for Lecithin.

I am e-mailing Bob.

Yes, but C sharp says that the granules don't contain choline in SWAMI. This means it probably has the same rating as soybean meal.

Do you think that because it is liquid the nutrition changes?

I am only guessing/speculating. I have no knowledge.

In SWAMI it is not unusual for data to be blank when accurate representative data is not available.  It is also possible that choline data is not currently used in SWAMI, but may be added in the future.

This is interesting.  Because soybean flour is a superfood for me.  So I guess Soy Lecithin is OK too.  They put it in some chocolate bars I think.

Lecithin is an emulsifier and so it is put into many foods including chocolate bars. The problem is that most lecithin is made from genetically modified soy. I purchase a soy lecithin granules that are non GMO by a company named NOW.

yeah, that darn GMO soy.  I think I usually buy the ones that say non GMO soy lecithin.  I'll have a look see.

This is an interesting point. I had always thought that soy lecithin had at least some of the same protein structure are soy. However talking with a few industry people, I was surprised to find out that soy lecithin does not have any soy DNA in it, let alone soy protein. It is just the highly specific nature of the purification process. Phosphatidyl compounds go one way and proteins (hence DNA) go the other.

There still must be something beneficial in it as I have no gallbladder and when I introduced this into my diet I felt such a relief. Then I waited one month and added Hepatiguard and now everything feels wonderful in there!!! (I tried the Explorer supplement for the liver but my body could not handle it very well and I think I recall seeing a post where Dr. D. said you shouldn't take it if you have no g.b. but I could not find the thread again).

Thank you for your time Dr. D! Does that apply to the granules as well, or only to the liquid lecithin Lola is talking about?

The reason I'm asking is because Soy granules, Lecithin is an avoid for me in SWAMi, whereas "Lecithin" in the condiments section is a neutral.

this was very interesting... not that it matter much to me... anything with the word "soy" attached is an avoid for me very interesting that soy lecithin doesn't contain any soy proteins any longer. makes me wonder what's in it that i cant have.

Doctor, is the lecithin you changed the one in the condiments section or the granules? The reason I ask is because SWAMI has two different lecithin values.

I am also unsure as to which of the two undergoes the purification process (Soybean Granules, Lecithin under vegetable proteins or Lecithin under condiments).

Changes made in the SWAMI nutrient database are reflected immediately in your data.

If you rerun SWAMI, you should be able to see if either form of lecithin changed ratings for you.   (My guess is that "Soybean Granules, Lecithin" now rate as neutral for you (instead of avoid)--But with SWAMI it is difficult to predict how a food will rate for a particular person. Since the ratings depend on many factors. Lecithin in the condiment section was rated as neutral for you before, and it likely still has that rating.)

For me both rated neutral before and still rate as neutral for me.

Looking at the data for foods it appears to me as if the "soybean granules, lecithin" was changed. (But I did not keep a copy of the old values for either form of Lecithin, so we are relying on my very weak memory)

Since fields are locked in SWAMI Xpress, I cannot test it under a range of conditions. The change should not change my values for "Soybean Granules, Lecithin" in SWAMI Xpress. The change is in SWAMI GenoType and I can see differences in the diet reports of some clients but not other clients.

The change made should not change the category it is listed under, only its rating. The rating will only change for some people not all.

If it's in the vegetable protein category, it sounds like SWAMI is referring to Soybean Granules, which is used sometimes as a meat substitute.
