Here are the fish problems down under - please help.
Very few SWAMI listed fish are available in Australia, so getting the 7 portions of fresh fish a week is tricky. Here's why:
1. there are very few SWAMI-listed fish at the fish shop, 2. there are plenty of fish whose names don't match the list, 3. the actual fish is not always the genus it claims to be. eg Mahi Mahi was a name given to shark, 4. fish shops can't tell me what species the fish is. eg what type of tuna - bluefin or skipjack, 5. tinned tuna or mackerel don't specify the species either - they just say tuna, 6. it's not possible to buy any wild trout or fresh wild salmon in Australia.
Is there anyone in the southern hemisphere who has the complete list of whats available in australia / NZ? I've just seen Jenny and others' posts on fish from 'research for all' in 2009.
I'm a bit sick of tinned sardines and frozen wild salmon...

I have similar issues with fish here in Hong Kong. I even went as far as asking a friend of mine who owns a large frozen fish company (they source deep sea fish all over the world) to help me. Even for a big company like hers, she could not help due to logistical and cost issues.
However, I guess I'm lucky that we do get rainbow trout and wild salmon from Australia in our specialty international grocery stores!!!
Perhaps all your wonderful fish have been exported

I'd like to know how the list you posted matches the swami lists.
you ll need to do your own math for that
there is however a list on food terms for UK and Aussie members....
maybe C sharp will fish it out for us.....pun intended

I have the same problem in Australia. What could help are Fisherman's guides to fish species with Latin names, one for NZ one USA. At least that way we would know related species, what was a possibility and they could be tried. I have an Australian handbook, but have not found a US one yet. The Australian one tells me that Sole is probably OK.

To help identify foods in Australia set the preferred vernacular on the "Manage Your Account Page" to "English-UK." It certainly does not cure everything, but it helps some.
