what might be the reason that seaweeds such as kelp and Bladderwrack could be avoids in SWAMI?
I am curious because I noticed it and for BT and Genotype both it seemed to be one of the golden foods of both, way up there in rating.
I'd like to know, possibly, what might make it detrimental to my system?
Does anybody know some possible negative issues with these seaweeds? |

Hi.
It seems that several Hunters (including myself) have lost the kelp family and bladderwrack. I can only speculate and have nothing solid at this time to point to.
I have switched to using wakame, still a superfood. I still use Deflect on occasion. |

Iodine or possibly some other micronutrient issue is a possibility. There may be other reasons. |

I've been taking kelp for 40 years. I started taking it because I developed a goiter & believed that it would help me. My goiter has not grown at all & I believe that the kelp is helping me. Kelp has also helped normalize my metabolism...the first physical evidence that I noticed was that my ankles got thinner...I had "kankles" & now I have normal-size ankles. I was not able to find an ankle bracelet to fit me & now I can. |

interestingly enough I had originally clicked on "history of thyroid problems" I UNchecked it just for ha-ha's to see if it changed anything..... boy did it! I had checked it off because my thyroid was abnormally LOW at 2 points in my life, NOT high! I wonder if I should have even checked it to begin with...... the first time I had low thyroid function I was, at the time, on LITHIUM (which can screw up a thyroid)... the second time..... well.... I had been eating about a head of raw cabbage PER DAY for several weeks (I know that it's goitrogenic). When I went off lithium, the thyroid went back to normal..... when I stopped eating the raw cabbage, my thyroid went back to normal.... and stayed that way.... Should I have even checked history of thyroid problems, or since it was clearly med related and specifically food related should I have not considered it? I am confused now! |

If you have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (autoimmune disorder in which the thyroid attacks itself) it is not recommended to consume idodine containing products as they can send the thyroid into an inflammatory "flare-up" period. Kelp and seaweed are iodine containing foods.
Most people that are Hypothyroid (slow metabolism with high TSH values) have not been tested for Hashimoto's. I read about it and had myself tested through an independent lab and showed the results to the doctor. It wasn't until then that he decided I needed medication because my TSH values were borderline high. When the thyroid is in a flare-up, it will swell and exhibit nodules, etc.
You can acquire a goiter whether you have either Hypothyroidism or Hyperthyroidism (fast metabolism with low TSH values). So unless you know you don't have Hashimoto's, it can be risky to consume iodine products. Sometimes you feel really sick during a flare-up but blame it on other factors without realizing the real cause.
Hope this helps~! |

Yes, it does. I knew somebody several years back that had Hashimoto's. It wasn't funny that's for sure. She had to be on medicine for it and regular checkups I only had thyroid issues from external issues (the medicine and then massive cabbage intake), They've always found it completely normal at other times (they tested a lot after the lithium to see if it would drop again without the lithium) and at annual checkups when they would take other blood work. Are you able to keep it under control now? |

Lola - yes, I remember reading in ER4BT that 0's have a higher incidence of thyroid disease, and Geno Hunter's autoimmune disorders. Hashimoto's covers both.
Spaz - I've spent 5 years doctor shopping until I took myself off all meds and went to an authentic Chinese accupunturist. After 3 months of accupuncture and Chinese herbs (I was not following any type diet at that time), my thyroid levels measured normal, my adrenal issues were resolved, and my heart palipitations went away. It was an amazing experience. Unfortunately, this was expensive ($100 for accupunture, then add herb costs) as I was going 3x week, then 2x, etc. One of my sons helped me pay for it, but then we had to quit. What a shame! Since then I've found the same herb combinations and am taking them, but my thyroid levels are bottomed out again - which I believe the accupunture itself was maintaining. Very interesting experience!
Beware - thyroid disease is the most undiagnosed problem that people have. The symptoms can mimic other problems (weight gain and high triglicerides blamed on diet, depression, hormone imbalance, muscle aches, dry skin, hair loss). It is extremely prevelent and the most common contributing factor is the flouride in our water supply, which destroys the thyroid - nasty stuff! Hopefully, getting my body in better balance through proper eating and exercise will show some results. |

Wow!!!! This sort of indicates that a lot of us shouldn't be using fucus vesiculosis, bladderwrack! Which a lot of us do! (I have a goiter, but no diagnosis) |

I also have found acupuncture and chinese herbs to be wonderfully effective. There is a growing number of community acupuncture clinics in America. The sliding scale is usually $15 and up. You sit in recliner lounges in a large room with other people being treated at the same time, fully clothed. HERE is a link to the community clinics in Pennsylvania. The same page also lists other states which have these wonderful clinics. |

I have thyroid antibodies even though my thyroid has been removed (I guess some leftover cells are still being hit by the antibodies) and Dr. D. recommended I take the bladderwok supplement for my thyroid. I am rethinking this now...maybe i should discontinue the bladderwok supplement. |

I'm glad you mentioned Deflect. I lost kelp and bladderwrack, but never even thought about Deflect which I take regularly. |

Diffy, what was it that you attribute the vomiting, etc. to? |

Doesn't sound like what would normally hapen when you follow his regime?? Can you definitely attribute it to his advice? I have personally had reactions to some manufacturers' vitamins, 'cos it wasn't clear till later when I fully researched them, that one or some of the ingredients were derived from corn... Even sales reps have not known this... Could it have been anything like this?! |

Victoria - Thanks so much for the accupuncture clinic link! I'll check into that for sure.
Diffy - It's very hard to say "whose" advice to follow. Dr. D is very educated and knowledgeble in the field of nutrition, but some doctors are experts in certain areas, i.e., thyroid, lungs, brain, etc...you know what I mean. I've consulted another naturopath who recommended I do iodine saturation therapy because, in his opinion, I am so deficient in iodine that my body needs to readjust to reach correct levels. I'm just too afraid to upset the apple cart and go against the grain of all the research I've done. I have a question in to Dr. John Lowe (thyroid expert and medical researcher) to address this very issue. When I get his answer, I'll certainly add it to the post.
For now - everyone has to follow the path of what's best for themselves. We're all different and react differently to food, meds, supplements, etc. I get instantly nauseated if I even smell the B vitamins in a bottle of complex vitamins. It'll be interesting to see how I do on Dr. D's vitties. |

I have borderline hyper thyroid numbers, low tsh & borderline high t3 & t4 according to my blood tests. Negative on the antibody test. I think I have been having problems w/ the polyvite, Deflect & possibly w/ the phytocal. I have temporarily stopped & if my symptoms go away, I will try the Phytocal again to see which one. I was wondering if I should be looking for another form of calcium? |

Well I looked up hyper thyroid again in Dr. D's encyclopedia & low & behold it recommends bladderwrack. Go figure, I guess I'll continue w/ my Phytocal & Polyvites....just reduce the dosage until I get a handle on what has been upsetting my stomach in the early am hours & reflux. I stopped for awhile & have less episodes, but not completely gone. |

just make sure bladderwrack comes from the fucus vesiculosis source........and NAP formulas do contain that source of bladderwrack or fucus vesiculosis......simple |
