Yesterday I was having a major edema episode and my chemical sensitivities are switched on high - ugh!

I have been making it a point to concentrate on getting in my geno-harmonic food combinations too - so what the heck!

I had my husband measure me last night with no interference from me (well almost none - come on, its really hard not to!) and I entered the results into SWAMI.  He says that my right index finger is ever so much longer than my right ring finger.  I have gone back and forth on this issue so many times.  I entered his measurements and it came up that I am an Explorer (40%).

After I let him review my fingerprints, he said that what I called a composite on my left index finger is really a radial loop in his opinion.  I thought it was a messed up arch, but he pointed out to me that there is a delta there and a vary narrow loop going toward my thumb and the delta toward my pinkie.

After reading about the radial loop on an index finger this seems to be another Explorer trait.   I will call NAP on Monday and ask them to change that for me.

I am an intelligent person, but boy oh boy, I feel like I don't know what I am doing here.  I guess it is all because the measurements are so close and my fingerprints are quite hard to read having low ridges.  I hesitated to write this out because I feel foolish because I have now claimed to be each and every Type O genotype possible!

Reading the Explorer explanation about being a medical enigma is me.

I am going to try this SWAMI Explorer Tea Rose combo and see if it helps me get rid of this edema.

Tea Rose,
It's really understandable Rose, cause that is sort of what happened to me.  The diets are not that different, and I am still trying to get more compliant.  I definitely have the differing fingerprints on my index fingers.  But I have horrible prints, have to use the magnifying glass to see them, and as you get closer to the pinkies, it's almost impossible to make them out.  I also went back and forth with whether or not I am caffeine sensitive, and settled with "not" for now, cause I don't react to it like I did in the past....
But yes, the O possible diets are very close, and if you come out explorer, you will probably still have lots of hunter traits.
Have we talked about your thyroid?  Cause I know that it can cause the edema thing also.
Also, I seem to definitely retain more water if I eat salty foods of any kind.  I still use small amounts of sea salt, but I can't eat things like sausage without swelling.  I also think it my
hormones......But for the thyroid, I seem to do well on even 2 polyvites a day for the iodine, and I
feel like my wedding ring is loser.  (That's my gauge right now)...

I know exactly what you mean. I really hate to appear idiotic, especially to people who don't know how intelligent I am.

I think we can over-think the measuring, because my 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th measurements were all over the place.

Today I measured my legs again using a method I came up with, and those measurements match the VERY FIRST measurements we took the first day, .

Hi paulam and D_Gale19,

I am not sure what exactly happened for me to get this pitting edema again.

My food lists for SWAMI Explorer have many of the same foods as my SWAMI Hunter list, but there are some changes that feel right for me.  When I look at my SWAMI Explorer food list it makes more sense to me.

My thyroid has been steady and balanced (as much as it can be) so I don't think that it is from that.

Usually when I have a re-occurrences of pitting edema it is food related.

I think it is important to not only have someone else do the measurements but let them read them also.  My husband measured me the first time and he said then that my right index finger was slightly longer than my right ring finger, but I didn't believe him because my mindset was "that I was a Hunter, that can't be right!".   (Sounds like "I'll do it my way" to me!)

The SWAMI Hunter list I was maintaining my current weight until I started doing the genoharmonic combos for Hunter and then this happened.

I have followed the SWAMI Explorer list for a day and a half so far and am down 2 pounds in water weight, so that is great.

I am going to continue and see what happens because I believe in this program so much!  I know it is just a matter of me getting the info entered correctly that is the problem.

I've been dealing with edema for a few years now. First noticed it after a long flight to a hot climate. It stayed with me from then on for about 8 months until I started the BTD. First week on the BTD at high compliancy it disappeared. I can't say what specifically was responsible for it's disappearance, could be losing the coffee, or the wheat, or both. It does reoccur occasionally, but usually only in the one ankle now (old sports injury), and only if I've been doing a lot of sitting AND haven't been drinking enough water. If I make sure both of these things are taken care of, together with a compliant diet, of course, it won't return. I have taken another long flight recently and didn't have a problem this time. I made sure to drink a lot of water before and during the flight and that was enough to avoid recurrence. It might not make sense to drink water when there is edema, but edema is actually a sign of dehydration.

teri,

I experienced really bad edema once on a flight across the country from Vancouver  to come back home.  In fact one leg was worse than the other.  That was before I was gluten free and we were returning from a cruise where I know I ate foods that I didn't normally eat.

It is distressing when it happens now, because I haven't had it for a while.  It is getting better now though.  I have lost about 3 1/2 pounds of water weight in the last couple of days since my original post.

I want to be really, really sure that I am an Explorer before I order anything else.  It feels right though you know.  3 days of really being compliant and I have even lost the water weight eating neutrals!!  Sometimes on the Hunter I couldn't even lose eating just diamonds and supers.

Drinking a lot of pineapple juice helps with my hands swelling (but mine's pregnancy-induced).

I have horrible issues with edema.  It started at about age 25, and my step-mom remarked that my face had changed shape.  I told her it was due to stubborn allergies and water retention, but she was convinced it was 'genetic', because my siblings developed the same issue at the same age.  Seeing that all of us have inflammatory issues that are partly inherited, I suppose she was right.  One of the reasons I love the GTD is because it reminds us that genetics does not equal destiny.  We can change.

The swelling has gone down considerably since starting this food plan.  But, I'd love any additional tips on how to reduce it yet more!  Are any of the supplements designed to counter water retention?

Also, the mention about coffee:  Does coffee contribute to water retention?  I had always thought it helped move liquids through, but I swear that my face became sleeker the day after my first coffee-free day.

My first bout of edema was when I was 16 years old - my Mother called it pretty accurately even back then.... she told me I was eating too much bread and cucumbers.

I used to have sandwiches of bread, with mayo and cucumbers.  I lived across the street from my Grandfather's farm and we had unlimited veggies.  I did eat a lot of cucumbers.  These are 3 avoids for me (whether I am an Explorer OR Hunter!).

I have also heard that nettle tea is very good in treating it.

The Adzuki beans and Job's tears are something that in addition to being superfoods on SWAMI for me, my acupuncturist has suggested too.  I have been eating Adzuki's the last couple of days and the pitting is gone.
