It has been months, maybe even close to a year since I have slept through the night.  I went to bed last night at 8pm and got up at 4am this morning.  Woohoo!!  This has been a major challenge for me lately.  I give full and complete credit to Dr. D and his wonderful way of living.  I am fighting back tears right now this has got me so emotional.  

Why oh why do I ever give up on this diet in the past?  Laziness, pure and simple.  I am so guilty of that, it is not even funny.

I didn't take any magic supplements before bed. And to all the naysayers about coffee... I started my day yesterday with my standard one and only one cup of lovely french-pressed coffee from freshly ground beans.  Excuse me while I take a sip, now.  Mmmmmmmmm......  now that hit the spot.  Coffee, good for Warriors, my SWAMI told me so.

So, as I was saying folks... complete 100% compliance, and I mean 100% is the only way to go.  But, let us not forget exercise.  Oh, yes, I'm also putting in my walk every day.  This is just as important.  And remembering to stretch beforehand, during, and after.  This may actually be the key to why I slept so well.  I have not been exercising AT ALL lately.  So, I was probably tossing and turning due to that, even though I was fairly compliant the past couple months.

Here is really why I think I slept the whole night.  I ate an entire cake of tofu last night for supper!      Yes, you read that right, an entire cake.  Pan fried it with some brown rice flour coating in some olive oil.  Then dipped it in wheat free tamari.  So so wonderful.  I couldn't get enough of it.  Had a papaya for dessert, a neutral for me.  Hadn't had one of those in many a year.  The dang thing cost me $2.50 for one fruit.      Also, had a piece of my compliant flat bread with some maple syrup as a sort of dessert, too.  

Life is good.

Lola: does the B12 do that for all types? That's really interesting! My hubby has been taking it recently and I haven't noticed any normalizing of his sleep patterns. Sometimes he would fall asleep right after dinner and wake up around the time I go to bed (2-3am) then stay up all night. When I wake up then he goes back to bed

Any number of reasons, really.  Poor diet, no exercise, STRESS, excessive drug and alcohol use, well, that about sums it up.  But, rather than concentrate on what DOESN'T work, why don't we concentrate on what DOES work.  Or, rather, what Dr. D has prescribed in my SWAMI.  Tofu is the best of all the vege proteins.  Eat before 7pm.  Get proper exercise.  Here's a few supplements on your SWAMI that will help, too.  Other things which I've heard from others, like:  Go to bed when you feel sleepy.  Don't stay up surfing the web.  Take some Tranquility Base to help calm you down.  I did all those things that day and had success.  I firmly believe the tofu was exactly what my body needed at that moment.  I firmly believe the salt in the tamari held back my urge to pee throughout the night.  Hey, guess what, I even had some dark chocolate around 7:30pm before going to bed at 8:30pm that evening.  So, even that stuff didn't hold me back.  Just do what the good doc has told us to do, and you'll be fine.

Looks like "STRESS" was the big one for you. Glad that's over, huh! You must have had to make some lifestyle changes to clear it up. That alone must have helped a great deal.

Hahahaha....ur funny.  No, my stress is not over.  Not by a long shot.  Last night, in fact, I had to stay late to drive my college-aged son home from a late night function.  I didn't get to bed until after 11pm.  This morning and today I feel terrible.  

The point I really wanted to make is that on that particular day, everything lined up perfectly for some reason.  If every day could be like that day, then life would be sweet.  Tonight is another late night with the son and another required college event for his class.  

As soon as I can, I'm doing the tofu routine again after having had a monster walk earlier in the day, and see if these are the positive factors to the good sleep.  I'll keep you all in the loop to what works for me and what doesn't.  I'm taking enough supps at the moment, too, so I'm not going to add another one right now.  I've taken Methyl-B12 and didn't find that it improved anything.

I must try that tofu recipe for my As...try as I have, I haven't been able to convince them to like tofu as much as I do (and I'm the one who's not supposed to eat it).

Y'know, when my A brother told me 5 years ago (at age 50) that he couldn't sleep all the way through the night (he had a heart problem) I suggested he try magnesium. He went out and bought a jar of caps that day and took 300mg that night and slept through. He's been taking it ever since, but I think it's time for him to raise his dose. There are people for whom it's an instant success story. I don't know your condition, but I'll say this, you'll get diarrhea from high doses of magnesium long before you do yourself any damage. I'd consider a 250-500mg dose of magnesium in the evening IF your insomnia pattern is "middle-of-the-night-waking-with-inability-to-fall-back-asleep". It's quite specific. Calcium can be used the same way, in a blend with magnesium, depending upon your own ability to metabolize it. We B's don't generally need to supplement with calcium; we can get it easily through a diet that includes dairy. Look into the bloodtype literature on magnesium and/or on your own medical conditions and the use of magnesium in conjunction with it.

Also, since high stress is such a big part of your picture, to the point where you're, as you say, biting your fingers compulsively, magnesium can be a real calmer. Anything under 1000mg is within normal limits for MOST people, but do the research and make up your own mind about it. Don't take my word for it, but don't ignore it either...

Wow that tofu is potent stuff... "Love the bit about go to bed when sleepy/don't stay up surfing the net" Hmmm need to start taking that advice Not that I have any trouble whatsoever  sleeping - more actually getting to bed

Thanks, san j, for the advice on magnesium.  I found this webpage:

I noticed a lot of my superfoods on that list.  The SF's high in Mg that I like from that list are Barley, Oat Bran, Almonds, Black Beans, White Beans, Pumpkin Seeds, Soy, and Spinach.  

Considering each time I eat the whole block of tofu I get knocked out, perhaps you are onto something.

I'll get a bottle of Mg from the store and see what happens.  I'll post the results here.

If your A's like salty things, then this is the ticket.  I have recently switched from firm to soft tofu, as well, as I like the creamy texture of soft, compared to the sponge-like texture of firm tofu.  

Just take the entire cake and squeeze it gently over the sink until you get as much water from it as possible.  Then wrap it in a bunch of paper towels and squeeze it some more.  You won't get all of the water out of it even after this.

Slice it up (around 2" by 4" pieces, around 1/2" thick) and coat it in the brown rice flour.  Let them sit and absorb the flour for a while.  Then coat them again.  Even a third time.  Heat a little non-stick pan, and add light olive oil until to about 1/2 depth.  Don't heat the pan too high, just medium to medium high.

Lay a couple pieces in the oil, and use a good set of tongs to pick them up and gently turn them.  Let them go about 4 or 5 minutes each side, until light brown, and then onto a plate with paper towels.

Mince several cloves of garlic and add to either soy sauce (very salty) or wheat free tamari (not as salty), and stir the garlic around in the soy sauce.

Give each person their own little bowl with the garlic soy sauce, a couple of pieces of tofu on a plate, and see what happens.

You might be pleasantly surprised.

OMG...I love tofu....unfortunately....a thing of the past.
So.....I can't sleep. I'm really sleep-deprived at this point. last night I got about 3 hrs. I worry about the health repercussions....how bad is it to take benedryl? the stuff helps, but I didn't have any last night. I take melatonin, mag., d-3, and progest cream.

IMO, it's better to take  benedryl and get healing sleep than it is to be sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation can really wreck havoc with your whole system, far more than the side effects of one dose of benadryl (especially when only taken at night, not all day long for allergy releif.)

You still need to make sure you're getting the minerals you need, see if your method of handling stress needs adjustment, seek out dietary and environmental triggers for sleeplessness, etc. Benadryl won't take away the need to fix the deeper issues. But it can help break the cycle of not sleeping and then being overtired and unable to sleep.

I personally don't like taking it because it interferes with my ability to be alert in the middle of the night if one of the kids needs me, although I do use it when I'm sick if I'm too stuffed up to sleep.

I managed to get to the supermarket today, leaving DS home (with adults downstairs) for about half an hour. I got fresh (not frozen) ground beef for tonight's dinner (the one in the freezer intended for tonight will be used next week.) I also got more juice and frozen peas, and earned the free frozen turkey (that I intend to pick up on Sunday.)

DS has had a whole cup of apple juice so far today (1-4 teaspoons at a time) and is currently eating macaroni and cheese. Pray that it stays down! OK, he had about an ounce before deciding he'd had enough.

I plan to get a meatloaf in the oven before taking him to the doctor this afternoon. This way, even if we get delayed, we'll still have a good dinner ready.

My foods today:

beet kvass, proberry syrup, beneficial teas, eggs in ghee with veggies and spices
lunch: leftover beef patties, leftover yellow quinoa, green beans with toasted sesame oil and ume plum vinegar.

my probs with sleep just build when I am indeed supertired...nerves just get frazzled. could be all the work I did for my recent art show....was exhausted, but it happens pretty regularly, then I'll move into a better pattern...up to 6 hrs a night and then I feel fine....I haven't had 7 in a loonnnnnggg time.

I mentioned melatonin above...I use it religiously.
I never ever used benedryl before, but someone said it can get you to sleep so I tried it and its a big help, but one doesn't want to get into overdoing it. thanks for your thoughts.
I've noticed that as I start to fall asleep, I catch myself resisting, as if I had to stay awake to finish cramming for a test...!! (indeed sometimes I am trying to finish reading something...but not for any reason!) these are habits that need some tweaking!!!

It's "worse" if you're writing something, something creative especially, such as poetry or a story or novel or screenplay, or if you're painting. I'm often inspired while I'm falling asleep, as well as while waking. The "right" word'll come to me, or if I'm trying to retrieve a lost phrase or paragraph, it'll just show up, and I'll wake up to write it down, so I can use it/rememorize it, whatever. I don't know if I'd call it insomnia, though. It's more "Creative Process". Comes with the territory.

But just wondering: If you use melatonin religiously, why not now?

If you're indeed diet-compliant, try these suggestions: Play with 'em:

An intense physical workout every morning.
Avoidance of alcoholic beverages, especially in the evening.
Valerian tea or tincture in the evening.
Chamomile tea in the evening.
Holy Basil supplementation
Rhodiola Rosea supplementation
Wild Oat extract supplementation.

(The three herbs at the bottom don't have to all be taken. You may find one that works for you, in conjunction with everything else.)

I don't know you. I don't know your condition(s) and what you mean by "compliance". But these are pretty innocuous suggestions that might get you thinking/doing...

Hi san j. Compliant for me means compliant. Recently (after almost 2 years on the diet) I allowed myself to cheat on a holiday or vacation but other than that, I follow SWAMI.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am beginning to think years of "I can't sleep" has given me exactly that, until I change my thoughts. Have been working on it but old habits die hard.

From now on "I sleep like a baby, I sleep like a baby!!!"

1. Babies often do not sleep through the night! In fact, the first time I saw this thread's title in the line-up, I figured some new parent was exulting over that transition with the infant  

2. If compliance with your program doesn't suffice you, then you need to individualize your program!
3. Sleep is one of those things people can stay up all night talking themselves into! I don't advise that.

Two B12 an hour before bed to help someone sleep?  WHAT?!     B-12 makes me wide awake in America, baby!  I usually try not to even eat any nutritional yeast in my evening meal because, if it is a potent batch, the B-spectrum vitamins in it definitely can keep me up all night, "racing".  (Interestingly, I do notice this hasn't happened as much lately, if I do eat nutritional yeast in the evenings...but I digress, sort of...)

Taking an actual B-12 supplement before bed would definitely be contraindicated, in my opinion, for anyone who has trouble sleeping at night!

(Please note that I am all for taking B-12 in the morning for folks who need a healthy shot of energy, so nothing against B-12, but I'm just saying that, as a sleep aid, that would be the very last thing I'd take, except possibly for a hit of Jolt Cola.   )

P.S.  I got so freaked out about the thought of anyone taking B-12 to help them sleep (   ) that I completely forgot to post what I originally was going to say in this thread.  

Adam:  A few years ago, when I started taking CoQ10 for gum health, I accidentally discovered something:  it must have helped to regulate my circadian rhythm or something because it really, really helped me start sleeping better at night, in addition to giving me energy and a wonderful sense of well-being in the day.  So it is energizing (on a deep cellular level, by the way) yet it also is deeply relaxing/reseting to one's day/night clock.  And this is just to name a little of what this wonderful substance does for me.

I still have problems getting enough sleep, but CoQ10 helps me a lot.  It is now one of my few "staple supplements".  The main reason I take it now is that it is excellent for your heart.  Women out there, it is also protective against breast cancer.  The stuff is wonderful.  For energy/sleep regulation, it can't be beat.*

* edited to add:  A related aside:  Anyone on a statin should be supplementing with CoQ10, as statins deplete the body of CoQ10.  I have FINALLY gotten my mom to agree to taking it, and I just got her a bottle of 60 mg CoQ10, which I will take to her next time I see her, yay!  I'm so happy about this.  She has VERY low energy and a lot of pain in her legs.  Could be old age and arthritis, etc., but also the fact that she is a long-time statin user could be a big part of this.  It will be interesting to see if the CoQ10 supplementation helps her.  Like a little chicken soup (except for B's), "it couldn't hurt".

What form of B12 did you try?  I take Methyl B12 from NAP an hour before bedtime and it absolutely doesn't keep me awake.

I haven't taken any B-12 supplement in years.  I get plenty of B12 in my diet.  I was responding regarding the suggestion that anyone take B12 as a sleep aid, which frankly I think is contraindicated as such.  A good, high-quality, active B-12 supplement is a beautiful thing, don't get me wrong...just NOT as a sleep aid, imho.  It is best taken in the morning, so that it won't keep you up at night.

Did a wiki lookup on CoQ10, and noticed that I get that via fish, soy, and olive oil.  Hmmmm.....been cooking that tofu in olive oil, might be a connection there.

Had that walk around the lake today, took me about 50 minutes.  It's about 2 1/2 miles.  Skipping the tofu tonight, instead some great northern bean soup.  We'll see if exercise is the key.  I'll dose with 500mg of Mg as well.

This B12 before sleep has been discussed in previous threads were if I remember right there were quotes from Dr D about the benefits of B12 for energy in the early morning or for helping sleep before bedtime!!!  It does work for both, it regulates the sleep/awake  patterns in our bodies ... of course, not any B12 may work ... I have only tried Dr D's B12 and bounced with energy during the day and sleep like baby at night ... this is by just taking it before bedtime ... from someone who also had trouble going to sleep at night ...

If your A's like salty things, then this is the ticket.  I have recently switched from firm to soft tofu, as well, as I like the creamy texture of soft, compared to the sponge-like texture of firm tofu.  

Just take the entire cake and squeeze it gently over the sink until you get as much water from it as possible.  Then wrap it in a bunch of paper towels and squeeze it some more.  You won't get all of the water out of it even after this.

Slice it up (around 2" by 4" pieces, around 1/2" thick) and coat it in the brown rice flour.  Let them sit and absorb the flour for a while.  Then coat them again.  Even a third time.  Heat a little non-stick pan, and add light olive oil until to about 1/2 depth.  Don't heat the pan too high, just medium to medium high.

Lay a couple pieces in the oil, and use a good set of tongs to pick them up and gently turn them.  Let them go about 4 or 5 minutes each side, until light brown, and then onto a plate with paper towels.

Mince several cloves of garlic and add to either soy sauce (very salty) or wheat free tamari (not as salty), and stir the garlic around in the soy sauce.

Give each person their own little bowl with the garlic soy sauce, a couple of pieces of tofu on a plate, and see what happens.

You might be pleasantly surprised.

Awesome! I've started taking it recently and I'm one of those people that can stay up till 3am or even 4 before being tired enough to sleep. My adrenals aren't happy at all with me. Good to know the CoQ10 is going to help me with that too! VERY HAPPY!
