Hi everyone, I just purchased the BTD books last Wednesday and started the recomended diet for type O on Thursday.  I have already lost 12 pounds (in 6 days).  Is that normal?
I am 44 yrs.  5'7" and 170 pound.  I always eat very healthy and exercise every day.  The only reason I started the diet was to get rid of 20 extra pounds that have piled on with age.  The only big change I made to my diet was eliminate wheat.  I have always ate large amounts of organic fruits and veggies, I only drink water and have no health issues.
If this keeps up there will be nothing left of me soon.  I love the weight loss, but it seems rather quick.  Please comment if anyone else has experience this.
Thanks

Hi Welcome. You can start using the Gluten Free products that are compliant..to replace the wheat.
That should stall the weight loss.    Besides at 5'7" which was my height, I felt good at 140

Welcome!

Losing 12 lbs in a week is a lot- but if it only happens once and then weight loss slows down, it's not unhealthy. It's only dangerous if weight loss continues at this pace. (Well, if you were 300 or 400 lbs then losing 12 lbs a week would be sustainable, but fortunately you're not in that category.)

Are you 100% sure you lost 12 lbs? Did you weigh yourself on the same scale, wearing about the same weight of clothing, at the same time of day?

Different scales could be off by 5 lbs from one another. Clothing can weigh several pounds. And weight can fluctuate throughout the day, depending on the volume of stomach and bowel contents. I'm usually 4-5 lbs lighter first thing in the morning (after using the toilet) than I am after lunch.

If the weight loss was largely retained water then that would be normal. It is not uncommon to lose more the first week or two of a new diet, on any diet.

I agree with Lloyd that the first week, it's common to lose weight quickly.  You most likely cleared a lot of retained fluids from your tissues and you might also have had larger bowel movements.  Wheat can be very inflammatory, and could contribute to holding more water weight.

I also dropped a lot of weight fast when I stopped eating gluten products.  It was shocking at first, but it leveled out.  Just make sure you are getting enough of all the other balanced nutrients, such as healthy fats and plenty of fresh vegetables, maybe some nuts.  Focus on eating plenty of beneficials.

I weigh myself every morning, on the same scale, at the same time, naked, just after I urinate.  So nothing there has changed.  I am definately sure of the weight loss amount.  I went down a clothing size already.  I dont think it was water, I never have felt bloted.  Just hope it keeps up.  What is everyones weight loss per week normally?
thanks for the responses.

I have been following my GTD personalized swami plan for a little over a week and have gained 5 lbs.

Lucky you for the weight loss.  I hope it continues.

Just BEFORE I started the BTD I had lost 20 lbs over the course of a year.  Then, the first 10 days on BTD I lost 10 lbs.  My initial BTD weight loss was not water either because I had already been losing for a year.  But after the 1st 10 days, the weight loss leveled out.  Now I lose about 2-4 lbs per month.  I could probably accelerate this pace a bit but I got a new job and don't have as much time for exercise now.  I would say not to be too concerned with the initial 12-lb loss--you're nearly 2/3rds of the way to your goal.  The weight loss pace should slow down right as you approach your 20-lb mark.  The body on the BTD naturally moves toward its ideal weight.  That might be what's happening here.  Just make sure to exercise during this time to keep building muscle--you want any weight loss to be loss of fat, not muscle.  Loss of muscle only is usualy what happens on most rapid-weight loss diets.

Following the BTD is a life long protocol.  Losing too quickly is not very healthy but should taper off soon.  Better to weigh once a week at the same time if you must gauge your success that way.  It's really about how you feel.  Congratulations on your success so far.  Keep us informed!

Congrats!! Nice surprise... I lost 12 lbs in a week the first time I went on the BTD 'cos I gave up cheese & dairy.. (Already wasn't doing wheat, sugar etc) Some foods hang onto weight (stop you losing) without you feeling bloated as such

Intracellular water and extracellular water move better in healthy cells, your cells are getting healthier and better at moving waste out. Water weighs more then fat in our bodies, I can see a patient put on 10 lbs in water and never even realize it.

Being bloated does not mean you have water weight.

In addition if you are not eating enough protein in the form of meat  you may get this effect.

How much meat are you eating? Is it grass fed?

Andrea,
I eat meat with every meal.  Luckily I have an organic grass fed beef, lamb, turkey, and chicken farm just around the corner from me.  Gueses there are some advantages for living in the sticks.
I dont eat dairy, gluten, or sugar any more guess that takes the pounds off quick.  I will keep all informed, as I am still loosing.
thanks

I lost 30 pounds rather quickly when I started BTD, then levelled off at about where I expected was my healthy weight... I still need to lose some fatty tissue and definitely need to gain some muscle, but I have many health issues that are healing slowly...

As long as you are healthy, the body should be able to dump the crud quickly with no ill effects...

Are you eating enough carbohydrates?  They can slow weight loss, which is good to remember if one is wanting to lose a lot.  When losing too fast or too much, try adding in more beneficial carbs.

Wheat may have been your main source of carbs, and if so, have you replaced it with something which is healthier for you?

All my carbs come from vegetables and I eat them with every meal.
Others seem to experience the same as I have with the weight loss, so I guess I will be happy and keep up what Im doing.
thanks everyone

This is not a weight loss diet, it is a lifestyle diet.  If you lose weight – great.  But don’t put all your energy into fretting about it.  When you are healthy, managing stress and exercising then your natural weight will emerge.
