Hi, guys.

As of Saturday, I've been BTDing for 10 years, as my first day was 9/22/97.

In some ways, I can't believe it has been a decade.  In other ways, I can't imagine ever, ever, ever, ever going back to my pre-BTD ways and they seem like another very distant and alien lifetime.  Even at my worst, "off the rails" times during these ten years, I'll still find myself saying things like "no croutons"...even if the rest of the meal is chock full of avoids *lol*.  Some of this has become second nature, hard-wired, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I really can't describe to you all how much I love, value, treasure and respect this diet.  When I hold up my end of the bargain, it never lets me down.

The biggest struggle for me has been weight and I'm still struggling with that to this day.  I was SO down about that until just over a week ago, but I do feel that I'm back on track now and I'm excited about that.  And, in the immortal words of my beloved George Harrison, "with every mistake we must surely be learning".  Even though here it is, ten years later, and I'm at my highest weight ever, even higher than when I first went on the BTD, you don't see me down on the diet or discouraged.  Why?  Because, like I said, when I hold up my end of the bargain, the diet does its thing.  I've lost the weight twice on this diet, and I know I can do it again.  Hopefully, the third time is the charm!  But as an O nonnie, I need to hold to a very high standard of compliance on both the diet and exercise aspects of this way of life in order to succeed with weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight, and I have not always lived up to that very high standard.  When I don't hold myself to that very high standard of compliance, the weight comes flying back on to this non-secretor.  All I can do is learn from my off-track times and try to do better, try to do the things, to make the choices, that I know keep me on track, and to give a wide berth to the choices that I know can and do trip me up.  Dr. D. wrote once that we learn way more from our failures than we do from our successes.  I really think that is true.

The BTD has really helped my overall health in the ten years I've been following it.  The ways are too countless to list (hence, they are countless *lol*), but trust me, I didn't know what a healthy baseline was until I experienced my BTD baseline.  Once you experience what real health is on the BTD, you never want to lose that again.  That is why I often say this diet is "self-regulating".  You stray too far and you miss the vitality you had, so you correct your course.

Not only are the health aspects fantastic, but the enjoyment, the flavors, the tastes, satisfaction, the whole experience of the diet itself keeps one on it.  When you go back and try to eat the standard American diet, it is like:

= "I miss my BTD!"

I can't stand, anymore, to eat chi-free/lifeless, de-everythinged, highly processed, refined, artificial, colorized, preserved, hydrogenated ca-ca anymore.  I want REAL, chi-intensive/life-filled and bestowing food!

One thing I think I've really gotten to after ten years is that my BTD has become my i-BTD.  I have customized it for myself.  I read a study once that was looking at people who were long-term maintainers of weight loss achieved via a diet.  What they had in common were that they all started out on certain diets (different ones, not all on the same diet) but they had ultimately customized the diets for themselves once they were experienced enough.  Well, the BTD starts out as a customized diet, it is not reductionist.  Yet even within that framework, we can customize it individually further.  And, dare I say, sometimes we even ultimately find that a certain avoid isn't the end of the world for us and that the variety of it helps us stay on track.  Hence, we arrive at our "i-BTD"...which isn't static, it is constantly evolving.

Anyway, ten years and loving and appreciating it more than ever.  My respect for the BTD only continues to deepen.  And my gratitude grows like a lovely shade tree.  I can't imagine any other way of life for me and I don't want to.  When I stick to the well-lit path, it takes me where I need to go.

I couldn't have said it better myself.  How many folks don't even know how great they can feel in their own bodies? I know every other "diet" I ever tried felt more like slow torture than the path to wellness.  Congratulations!
