here's my testimony: I ate about a quarter to a third cup of guacamole on a big salad with ground beef patty and my stomach and esophagus have felt strange since...(it was last night)...nothing big, just kind of unsettled, wouldn't have drawn a connection if I hadn't known it was an avoid.....so, although I don;t know why avocado is an avoid (and I hate that it is) I had a personal experience of it that has convinced me. Also I have been extremely compliant recently so its easier to notice these things. (sigh...) |

Jayneeo, Was that at Chipolte by chance?? I did the exact same thing. I ate a beef salad with guacamole, and my stomach felt uncomfortable for about 24 hours. I also hate that avacado is an avoid because I LOVE IT. I grew up in Tucson, so you can imagine the yummy Mexican foods that I have to avoid. Guacamole, Cheese, Tortillas...it's kinda tough some days. I'm in Chicagoland now, and here it's the Italian food that kills me. Maybe it takes time to shed the cravings. Shane |

JayneyO, I had a very itchy throat for about four hours (then went to bed for the night) when I ate the last avocado... I decided that the avocados are for the A's in my house! |

I'm actually getting my secretor test done to see if I can have avocados cuz on the rare occasion I cheat with them, they don't bother me. All avoids bother me. reading about secretor, I could go either way. I was never sick throughout my life though until I hit 43 and had a major stomach issue. I'll see, I'm hoping for nonnie!! I travel to Scottsdale a few times a year and just thinking about the temptations of the great food (guac & margahritas on the patios) makes me scared. I stay compliant but it's sooo hard. I just don't want to feel crappy and bloated on vacation but It's impossible to eat out and be compiant. we're actually not going this spring, partly because of that. I'm feeling pretty good lately and don't want to rock the boat. |

Another testimony for the unfriendliness of an avocado towards type O.
Way before the BTD, these rich creamy green gems went ripping through my stomach causing all kinds of problems, only later to see them on the "avoid" list.
I used to love avocado and mango salad! I also used to make a chocolate avocado dessert when I went through a vegan phase. |

anyone know WHY avocados are avoids? I've looked everywhere. I'm sure Lola's got something up her sleeve (if it sounds like I'm weighing my consequences, i just might be. lol) I hate to be noncompliant but...avocados are aactually "living a little bit" for me. |

Wouldn't the answer simply be because they contain lectins that are incompatible with your bloodtype, potentially interfering with digestion and immune system? |

Sure, if that were the answer but not all foods are lectin related. It says lectins for other blood types but not for O's. seems it has to do more with latex related allergy something or other. I have NO allergies. Some foods are also more damaging than others. Everyone of us has occasionally eaten an avoid and I'm just picking my battles. There are MANY reasons for avoids and I am simply just curious |

Also, my diet is very limited. I am not at all in bad health nor do I wish to live until 100. This way of life can be very obsessive and if eating 1/2 an avocado once a month will keep me compliant the rest of the month and not "fall off the wagon", I'll eat it. I was just wondering what the damage was going to be. They also don't bother me in the least, like most avoids do. That is why I'm getting secretor tested. |

they might just turn out being medicinal for you!!
Quoted Text
Dr D Avocado has a lectin which reacts with the other types. Same with A's and red peppers, in addition to peppers being difficult for type As to digest.
Quoted Text
Dr D......the sicker the gut the more a person would tend to react to avoids. Again, this is probably the result of glycosylation differences between healthy gut tissue (which has time to mature, and tends to lose antigenicity) and unhealthy gut tissue (which tends to be the opposite). In such a case, you may well find that most of the people on a board like this, who often tell stories of the program's success, are (or were) quite sick. You may well be 'not sick' enough to have a directly noticeable reaction to avocado.
Quoted Text
This may have some significance in the development of caries. Interestingly, avocado lectin inhibited the sucrose dependent adherence of S. mutans to plaque pellicle. Approximately 1 to 5% of the ingested dietary lectins are absorbed into the blood stream. Here they can clump and bind to red and black blood cells, destroying them. It has been proposed that much of the low grade anemias seen In the third world may be resulting from destruction of red blood cells by lectin rich grain and bean diets.

Avocados, cantaloupes, and melons make my mouth and throat itch. I do not like cantaloupes and melons much but still love avocados in spite of the itch. Eggplants do the same thing. I found out I was allergic to avocados when I put some on my face (face mask). It made me break out in hives - ugly red welts that took a week to go away! Funny thing is, even if avocados make my skin break out, I could eat it. Perhaps, that is why I would have stomach issues. I found out through the BTD/GTD that avocados are on my avoid list.... figures. The itching could be a sign that 1> the food is on your avoid list or 2> you are allergic to it (for one reason or another).
JayneyO, I had a very itchy throat for about four hours (then went to bed for the night) when I ate the last avocado... I decided that the avocados are for the A's in my house!

It sure is great to have the knowledge we have here. I was naughty this weekend. I had ice cream, oreo cookies and vanilla cake. I blew up like a balloon. Since I lost all the weight, my rings are so loose that I am afraid to lose them. I swole up so much that I could not get them off. The more things like this happen, the more you want to stay compliant. To think that it was food that was causing all of my health issues before. |

I followed the BTD for 7 years without knowing my secretor status. I did just about a year of special eating when I had gallbladder problems and reintroduced avocadoes at that time because what I had been reading said that they were a good fat. I had been avoiding them because I assumed I was a secretor. But when I did eat them they sat very well with me. When I switched to the GTD 2 years ago, I finally did my secretor test. Turned out that I was a NONNIE and I could have been eating avocadoes all along. Now I enjoy them, guilt free, as they are Supers on my SWAMI. |

I am having a real problem giving up my delicious cup of Irish breakfast tea in the morning since I am now swamied as an explorer. Coffee and tea have never kept me from sleep, bothered my stomach or sent my blood racing. Now that I have read this thread maybe black tea is one of those "individuality" things. |

I was really busy and did not have time to cook compliant foods. I made instant noodles that I used to love but ICK... does not taste as good anymore! I miss my BTD/GTD foods. |
