I was introduced to the BTD (A+ Type) by my naturopathic physician about ten years ago.  He had attended the same school as Dr. D, and trusted his work.

Avoiding the "forbidden" foods did eleviate my severe headaches, and generally I felt better.  I loved the food plan, and especially being able to eat soy, which I've used since I became a vegetarian 25 years ago (I'm 50) .

But a few years ago, after unexplained weight gain and fatigue, an MD diagnosed a severe thyroid deficiency.  My naturapathic doc then told me to swear off ALL soy products, since it "aggravates a low thyroid condition."  Anyway, I'm now on daily thyroid hormone replacement, wondering whether I can safely eat soy again.  What's a Type A to do?  I may have been eating something that aggravated a thyroid condition...?? I'm going to ask my regular MD about it...

As you're only on post 2...I'll say welcome to the forum!!
I too have an underactive thyroid and take meds but have to say that I only take soya milk with my cereal each morning, so probably not enough to disturb anything.

I'm sure other members will have more experience for you to draw on.

Welcome to the forum LorettaA,

Have you read Dr. D's book Live Right 4 Your Type?  It's a more advanced version of the diet that encompases secertor status, and it's impact on food status.  I ask because I notice you don't have your secretor staus selected in your avatar.

The interesting thing about Type A's is, there are over 25+ foods that change value from allowed to avoid between the Type A secretor diet and the Type a "nonnie" (slang for non-secretor) diet.  So although the Type A secretor diet helped you in some areas, now may be the time to get secretor status tested, (and maybe your other subtypes that are very important in Type A's such as A1 or A2, and MN) to ensure you are following the correct diet for your type.

Hey LorettaA...welcome to the forum and glad to hear that you have been on this BTD way of life somewhat for about ten years.  I am with KK on getting your secretor test done along with your subtype tests.  Are you doing much yoga or meditation of any kind?  I have an A friend who had been doing the diet and was doing well and then started to gain.  I asked her to write down the things she ate during the day (which she said got her to realize that she had a bit too many grains and not enough beneficial veggies) and to concentrate more on yoga to keep her cortisol levels down.   Her wieght came off quite quickly.  We are still waiting for her secretor test results and we both go to my naturopath at the beginning of May so hopefully her subtype tests will be done also.  

Keep posting on how you are doing.   We'd love to hear from you.
