Hi there,

Ive been on this blood type diet for ten days now,was preiviously on atkins,and im wondering has anyone else had a problem with bloating?.
Ive not gained or lost weight and the only things i've added to my diet are:pineapple juice(200-300 mls a day),one banana daily,2 tablespoons flaxseed oil daily,1 piece essene daily and 3 servings each of rice and sweet potatoe weekly.
I was hoping to lose 2-3 kg and get healthy but instead i look like i have a basket ball up my top!.
Any help or suggestions would be welcomed.

Are you eating the right number of portions of your beef servings a week, are you eating greens.
I eat 1 sweet potato a month,maybe.  I eliminate white from my food (floor, rice, white potato, cauliflower, oats) These are either avoids or raise my glucose, which turns to fat.  I use olive oil (3 Tablespoons a day, even if I just pour it on my meat.  Or on my greens with a dab of fresh lemon squeezed and a tad of curry powder.

Plums are beneficial for us and so is ginger. (I cut up in a bowl 1 plum about 1/2inch ginger grated and 1or2 T water and microwave for 6 minutes) It is very good

I also toast pumpkin seeds(the green kernals) in a frying pan with olive oil in it in a single layer, med high heat(attend carefully) they crack and you turn them, golden brown is best but brown taste good to.  It goes fast! (I sprinkle sea salt and curry powder and cayenne pepper on top of the olive oil before adding the pumpkin seeds) Also, if you can, leave cool after you remove from pan, they are HOT!  I eat 1 oz almost daily.  

Are you also eating walnuts, they are very beneficial to "O's. (I am assuming you an "O" because of what you chose to eat in your first message.  This is advice for an "O".

Thanks Geminisue,ive been eating all of that bar the plums and ginger but that sounds good so i'll try it!.From what you wrote im thinking i'll cut down on the rice and sweet potatoe(boo hoo,such a treat after being on atkins).

For the most part, the O's on this forum seem to have the best success with weight loss when they are eating grain-free, and getting their carbs from vegetables and fruits.  It's also recommended to get a hearty breakfast of meat and vegetables instead of a carb breakfast.

So im better off to have sweet potatoes than rice and if so how many servings a week if im trying to lose weight.
At the mo this is what im eating:

Breakfast:1 essene bun with half a banana and a green tea
Snack:smoothie,200 mls pineapple juice,half banana,4 strawberries and 2 tablespoons flaxseed oil.
Lunch:leftovers from dinner or a small salad with lemon and olive oil.
Snack:walnuts and almonds
Dinner:Steak and salad,sweet potatoe
Glass of red wine
Cup of green tea before bed,and lots of water throughout the day!

Am i on the right track?

Welcome to the forum barbie.

Adding vegetables/salads to your meals may keep you feeling satiated and full; it will help to clear toxins and fat from your cells.  Vegetables are good internal cleansers that assist in moving substances and particles along in your digestive track.  

Beneficial vegetables are the only food group that are listed as 'unlimited' for most blood groups.

Does your current pineapple juice contain any avoids?  Fresh pineapple may aid with your current bloating challenges.

Barbiepink, Welcome to the BTD and to the forums.  So I'm not repeating myself, please read my testimonial on the Testimonials Forum, Celebrating Today, for some newbie O advice.  I, too, have done the Atkins plan in the past and lost weight but gained it back when I increased carbs in my diet.   I now know that I can't eat the carbs I was choosing.  They aren't for me.  Have you seen the propane commericial where the propane guy says to the electric guy, "You and water.....not the best of friends."      Well, that's how we Os and the wrong carbs are.  I was very happy to be eating fruit but we must remember the quantity guidelines.  I do best to have my fruits in the evening as my snack.  This keeps me from craving more later because it's too late to eat anything after my smoothie.  I have my fruit, usually frozen banana, frozen blueberries and pineapple juice (diluted with water) and a teaspoon of freshly ground flaxseed,  around 8 p.m. and go to bed at 10.  I also love mango (never had it before BTD), plums, walnuts, etc. for a change.  Are you noticing what the smoothie ingredients have in common?  Beneficials!!  Starting and ending my day with beneficials really helps keep me on track.  The BTD is about being an individual so this may not work for you but trying different ways and not getting locked into a rigid plan is how you will find what works for you.  I look forward to reading more about your journey!

Yeah, I'm just going to say...............whoa.........carb overload, that is a ton of starches for anyone to eat especially an O.  After being on Atkins you need to slowly retrain your body to digest some of these things, fruit sugar as well. Don't go overboard, the O diet is not a high starch diet.........

I think that sweet potato is better than rice for you.  

I have a feeling that for an O, and especially an O who wants to lose weight, your daily meals are sort of reversed.  

You would do better with meat, eggs or fish, and some vegetables for breakfast.  Or you could have your smoothie when you first wake up and your meat and veggies an hour later.
Lunch should also be a serving of meat or fish with lots of vegetables.
The evening meal would be a good time to have carbs, such as sweet potato.  I have sweet potato, ghee and fish for my evening meal, but then, I'm not an O.  

All those carbs for breakfast will make it very hard to lose weight.  And I don't think you're getting enough protein on the diet your described, and I agree with LauraP, too much carbs for you.  An Essene bun is a lot of bread.

I'll start afresh tomorrow and  see how it goes,Im thinking i'll have half an essene bun instead of a whole one , dilute my pineapple juice,add some more protien and cut out the rice and sweet potatoe.
What do you think?

Hi there newbie, I'm one myself  ! I went stumbling thro the right mix of what to eat when...and it's so true to have meat protein with leafy greens for bfast & lunch and fish & starchy veggies for dinner. My fruit intake is between meals and as a snack. Lots of water, before meals but never during & immediately after meals. I dont eat anything after 730pm. Ghee & suppliments just before bed.

This forum is great, and the members are ever so ready and patient to guide you along. So please dont hesitate to ask for help & advice.

Hi Barbiepink:  Welcome to the BTD forum.  Lots of great advice above and being an O...don't I know it.  Carbs...yep...need to get rid of them in the morning.  Even half the bun.  Eat it for your evening meal.   Protein and lots and lots of veggies.  Not just a small salad as you will find out for yourself.  We O's need it and...don't count calories.  When you are full...stop.  It will take you a long while before you are hungry again.

And...another important...exercise for your O type.  Soooo important.

I agree.  While there is nothing wrong with what you are eating, I would suggest spreading the protein out more evenly so that it isn't all in the afternoon and evening.  O's really need to start out the day with some protein, and as Victoria said, you could have a fruit smoothie by itself (i.e., with no protein) first thing in the morning and then a protein breakfast an hour-ish later, but the point is to get some protein in there as soon in the day as you can.

Welcome, and good luck to you!  I think the BTD is way more customized than Atkins.  Once you tweak things a bit to resolve the bloating issue, you will probably be lovin' it!

P.S.  I can't believe I forgot to add this:  please read the ingredients of the specific brand of essene bread you are buying.  While real essene bread, which is all sprouted, would be great, some brands calling themselves essene and, more commonly, ezekiel actually contain unsprouted, regular old wheat and if yours does, that would be the cause of the bloating, right there, me thinks.  If you do find out that your brand is a no-go, you may want to switch to a rice bread or a 100% rye bread, both available in most health food stores' freezer section.

I don't see the need to give up sweet potato if you enjoy it.  It's one of the good kind of carbohydrates, and I think it's a better deal than any of the breads.  Veggie carbs are easier for your type O constitution to process, and the grains make your body think it needs to take them and make some fat.

But keep the carbs to the evening meal.  And up the vegetable intake.  Check out all the beneficial vegetables that you can steam, saute in olive oil or ghee, bake, and add to salads.  The more beneficials you eat, the better.  Neutrals can keep you "stuck in Neutral", as Peppermint would say.

Try to be patient. Your digestive system has to adjust to your new way of eating. You might try using ginger in your cooking or ginger and/or peppermint tea to help calm your digestive system.

There are other supplements that would help too, such as Polyflora O probiotic.

If you investigate this carefully you may find that there is one or maybe a few foods that are currently causing the bloating trouble. You may need to avoid that food or those foods for a few weeks or even a few months until your system adjusts. I had a similar problem with plums and figs when I first started the BTD. The problem went away after about 4-6 months.

i'm wondering how you are doing now, as far as the bloat is concerned.

i have had these issues all along despite being exceedingly compliant for many months.  i have terrible flatulence, too when it was never an issue before.  i am not tempted to go back as i'm seizure free without medication on this diet but this is ridiculous.  did you try deflect?  i'm on acidophillus and following an anti candida diet but no results so far and i'm hungry all the time. (i'm still breastfeeding so that's likely the reason).  somebody please, advise me.  i never had digestion issues before (beyond frequent constipation--and that is still constant--even with a family size bag of greens daily)  i started avoiding so many foods.  when do i get to free great or at least not embarass myself with gas?

Heidi did suggest juicing as remedy for constipation in her column.  I'd do a search.

You should not be always feeling hungry.  Are you following the serving/frequency guidelines in Live Right?  As your energy needs will be higher while you are breastfeeding  I would be inclined to aim for the upper end of the range and see how that goes.  

Are you sure you are suffering with candida?

What greens are you eating?
