Hi everyone.

I am new to this whole blood type diet, exercise and lifestyle routine.  I was hoping I could get some insight from those who have been through what I am right now!

I was suffering from serious headaches (4 - 6 days a week), gained 80 pounds in the last 4 years, joined a gym, began seeing a personal trainer only to see myself get bigger and feel worse about myself.  I took drastic measures and FINALLY went to see a Naturopath about 3 weeks ago.  It took some convincing from a long list of friends who have been to see them and swear by them.  I need to add that I'm not rich and the biggest reason for not going was the cost.  So my friends say, "well you paid hundreds for your gym membership...so really....what's the difference?"  I bit my tongue and went and never looked back.  She immediately started me on some Magnesium for my headaches and said she would test my blood to find out my blood type and start on this BTD.  Can you believe I didn't even know what it was??!!!  I know shocking.

ANYWAY, in the past 3 weeks, I have only had 2 headaches, my digestive system has started to work overtime (anyone who has ever done a cleanse can relate), I'm not bloated, like the taste of food more HOWEVER..........I find grocery shopping and cooking such a chore that I find no enjoyment in this and have a hard time convincing myself that this will help me.  I am a type A - I don't know if I'm a secretor/non-secretor - hell I don't even know what that is or why it's important. I don't know if I'm A+ or - and apparently that's not important either.  I was a huge meat eater - love potatoes, bananas, milk, peppers of all kinds and vinegars of all kinds and tomatoes - to name but just a few, and cooked to satisfy both myself and my common law husband who also doesn't know what his blood type is.  I find myself having to cook 2 meals, one that suits my needs and one for him who doesn't seem to be to keen on joining the blood type diet world.  That's OK!  I respect him for that.  

My point after rambling on is that I haven't noticed a significant change physically (aside from the headaches) and detoxing is extremely difficult physically and emotionally.  Who has been through this and who can motivate me and give me a meal plan that leaves me full, satisfied and not craving all those not so good foods I enjoy so much.  How often can I have a cheat meal and how far do I push the limits before it's called bingeing?  

HELP!!!!!!!

Start slow cut back on fatty meats, eat veggies,fruits,salads go light on grains and have a very long daily walk. I lost 33 pounds in a matter of about 3 months my goal was to lose down to 124 but I exceeded that by 7 pounds I now weigh 117. It will happen. Regards

I started three weeks ago and am going through the same thing. Detox, headaches and everything else. Sometimes I am really tired, but I just hang in there because I am seeing results. I used to wake up in the morning and really need an hour before the fog had lifted from my head. Now when I wake up, I am awake. And I wake up before the alarm goes off. That has not happened to me in a very, very long time.

As for the shopping. I just enjoy it soooo much. I have put all my foods in an excel spreadsheet in three colums, I colored them Green, white and Red (Beneficial, Neutral and Avoid) and I have it with me always. I go to the supermarket and I read all the labels, try to find things I usually don't eat (some things I did not even know existed) and I spend a really long time in the supermarket. In the past I would run through, grab what I wanted (all bad things) and run out. Now I take my time and really enjoy it. I know I am working on my health and that always cheers me up.

I can't remember when I felt this good, this upbeat (and I have a very optimistic character by nature), this happy, this healthy. I sometimes just feel like jumping in the air from joy or running really fast just to get all this energy out of my body. I don't run though because I have bad knees and bad ankles, so I jump on my orbitrek, I put on some Queen and I just go!!!  

Another thing you might want to look into. Do you put aspartame or any other artificial sweetener in your coffee, tea or do you drink diet drinks? Stop that immediately. I was tortured by headaches for years. Now I've stopped drinking my diet Pepsi and I am almost headache free. I really had withdrawal from that stuff! Now I get headaches when i am really hungry so I am guessing it's connected to my blood sugar level. But they are no where near as bad as when I was still aspartame addicted.

Hope this helps you to get going as well. And just ask away on this board. The people here are the friendliest and most helpful bunch I have ever seen. Thanks guys, you've helped me tremendously.

Sandraruba- Any way I could talk you into emailing me a copy of your shopping spreadsheet??  

Sandra-agrarian- I've only been following the diet for 1 week.  I've been doing really well except for last night I ate 3/4 of an Italian sweethot & spicy sausage.  I really miss using pepper and spicy seasonings.  Also I'm mostly used to prepackaged food to some extent.  Using only fresh, homemade foods is very new to me.

I have lost 4 lbs in one week.  I'm very happy with that but have about 20 or so more to go.  I feel better, I can wear pant that I could button last week!  I HAVE TO stick to this.  I'm tired of the extreme weight fluctions.  I've been anywhere from 95-165lbs. I need to get to a good healthy weight and MAINTAIN!  I'm 34, waiting to find out secretor status.  My husband is an O.

I haven't been excercising except for 30 crucnhes on side, middle, side each a.m.  I think I'll start my yoga today....I should anyway.

I did find a few easy to make and really tasty dishes.

Brkfst- make REAL oatmeal w/ soy (or vanilla soy for more flavor, watch for avoids) sprinkle in dried cranberries, currents, slivered almonds, add blackstrap molasses if you want.

smoothie-vanilla soy, little bit of kefir if you want(tastes gross but makes it thicker), whatever fruit you want.  I have to buy frozen.  We don't have much fruit exceot for apples, bananas, and oranges.  I get frozen berries(allkinds) peaches, cherries.

Last night I made a dish from here, it was rice, spinich, feta.  I forgot what I it called, but really tasty!!

Thanks, you guys are helping me so far.

How long is detox supposed to last?  I've been doing this over 3 weeks and I'm still getting very acquainted with my toilet!!!!!

How many/often do you cheat?  I haven't had meat since I started and miraculously, I don't miss it.  But I miss milk (normal milk) and bananas and potatoes.  I can do without the rest.

I wouldn't mind a copy of that spreadsheet either.  Please email it to jps_gal2000@yahoo.ca

I had lost about 12 pounds and then put on about 4 more so far.  I need some good solid support and motivation.  I thought giving up red meat was going to be the clincher for me!  I'm still waiting.....

New Sandra-you've lost 8 lbs total in 3 wks?/  That sounds like a good healthy start.  Not to much to soon.  My hardest thing is finding new receipes, especially for dinner, like wild rice, amareth, and quinoa dishes.  Any suggestions?

My fresh fruit and veggies are very limited.  I don't cheat very much.  Mostly just a bite here or there but never over board. Yesterday I was very compliant until dinner.  I had a bite of BBQ beef and a bite size snickers bar. (Damn that Halloween!!)  I have only lost about 4 lbs.  I think I may start wrighting down exactly what, when, and how much and go from there.  I really have a hard time eating so early.  I'm used to not eating until 1p.m. or so.

well, at least I did my crunches all this week so far!

Eat a lot of neutral and benie whitefish and other ocean fish. You stools may reek for a few days; thats OK. Tons of greens, with onions, mostly cooked. Then add eggs, oils, fruits,  starchy veggies, nuts, seeds and legumes, grains, finally dairy.  If it's possible add some yoga, tai chi, stretching,  or the Moo Pahl Dan Khum to your day.

Welcome to the forum.  

It is probably not best to designate a 'cheat day' when starting this way of life.  I truly believe that the more you start eating the foods that are right for your body, the less tempting eating avoids will become.  Soon enough, you will be learning new foods to substitute and replace foods that you used to eat.  

You may also find it useful to take a probiotic during this time to assist with the internal flora changes that are occuring in your body.  NAP offers a probiotic specifically for blood type A's.

Best wishes to you as you embark this journey.

I can only say that I totally agree with this. When I started my "healthy" living 10 weeks ago, I cut all the fat, sugar and diet products but I still had those cravings. I wanted to eat cookies, chips and everything else that was bad for me. It took me a lot of willpower to stay away from it but every now and then I said, ah the heck with it, and I indulged myself. As I got closer and closer to BTD way of eating my cravings became less and less.

Since I started with the BTD for real I've had little or no cravings. Yeah last week we had pizza. But that was more out of laziness then really wanting to eat it. And we did regret it.

And you know another thing? I actually enjoy cooking! I used to hate cooking, which is why it was always something fast and simple (which meant fries most of the times).
I also enjoy shopping much more. Wish we had more supermarkets here where I can find new things.....

Thanks guys.

I find myself saying no to those yummy chips ahoy cookies already.  My idea of a cheat is eating the avoid fruits and vinegars.

I have no meat and thank God I don't miss that.  I though I would have a harder time with that.  I have some banana, cantaloupe and honeydew on the weekend and I felt guilty eating it, even though it's such a "healthy" food.

By cheating, I didn't mean cheeseburger, fries and pizza.  I have a really good recipe for "A friendly pizza crust" if any of you are interested.  My idea of cheating is throwing in the occasional spice in the avoid list or adding potatoes and the such.

Do you A's have vinegar?  I  used to use it a lot in my cooking because it's so versatile and adds so much flavour.  It would be nice if I could sneak it in my cooking once a week or in my salad dressings daily!  OKAY, maybe not DAILY but....can't I just have a little splash?

What about lemon juice- its beneficial and really great in salads and even in hot dishes( to add the acid taste.)
Maybe use some wine in your cooking when wine boils down it gets stong and slightly acid. I like whitewine sauces with fish and veggies.
I fry chopped onions add wine- boil it so it down so it nearly disappear -add a bit of soup,(maybe some soy/rice milk) and some ghee to make it creamy- when I cook for both my O and I - off course I use cream when it is only B´s. works wonderfull with steamed fish - sometimes I make sauce hollandaise with eggs, lemonjuice and ghee really wonderfull.

I'm a little confused by what Dr. D said.  Should I eat fish everyday???  More than what the book said.  I have been eating virtually no meat of any kind(except for one day of picking at BBQ beef for sandwiches.  Does he mean to limit the grains and fruit, etc..The book says 3 fruits per day.  Can someone clear this up for me?

I believe Dr. D was addressing the initial post in this thread.

I also began the BTD 2 months ago.  Pretty heavy detox period in the beginning.  Headaches, constipation at times, etc...  Those things are starting to level out.  But I notice that I go through phases.  Some days I feel better and then the headaches return.  I am 100% compliant and have no desire to "cheat."  I did once and I felt terrible.  The longer you follow the BTD, the less cravings you have.  

If you think of how long you've been eating poorly, well, cleaning up takes time.  It's not going to happen overnight.  Just stay compliant and be patient.  Over time, I think the body will revert back to its normal state and the detox will go away.  

Anything worth achieving is worth taking the time to do right!

I have been reading about the talk of Detox.....I know what detox is of course, but I have no detox signs with this diet....no headaches, no bathroom issues, no nothing. Is that normal to not have any signs, or is it too early yet to tell? Been on the BTD for about 7 days. I had great results from day one, no pain at all for a few days, that is not the norm. I used to have pain every day, debilitating pain...now I am about 75% pain free, not nearly as bad as before, but also not as good as the first few days.....Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I think it's very individual, Sasha.  Sometimes detox just takes the form of what seem to be temporary relapses into our old symptoms, but they get milder and less frequent.  
You may find that sometimes you feel great and sometimes you feel bad again, but it's like two steps forward, one step back.  You're continuing to progress along the path to wellness.

Wow!!!

You guys have given me so much to think about, work on and improve.  I can't thank you enough.

Thanks for welcoming me to the board.  So far, I feel very welcome and supported.  If I least think of it as I'm improving my health - weight loss is just a bonus.

Thanks for all the great ideas and I look forward to hearing more from you as this diet continues.  I have talked about it so much with my family and friends that I think I have done an excellent job of converting them to this way of living also.  Maybe I can soon be a source of help and support to new people on this diet.

Thank you so much.  I wish I could hug and kiss everyone  but I guess a big smiley face will have to do for now!!!!

My favorite thing to cook (and there's always leftovers for lunches) is a stir fry . . it is easy & tasty - I don't have an actual recipe because I am a "what's in the fridge?"
kind of cook   . .but start with a wok and add: some olive oil (I use the light for cooking), garlic, fresh grated ginger, onions & some tamari (most soy sauce has wheat), add mushrooms (compliant types),sugar snap peas, celery, carrots, scallions, even spinach, I add tofu or tempeh (just discovered tempeh . .its' great in a stir fry). Add more tamari, garlic etc. to your taste. I also add a tsp or so of miso.

great snack: Ezekial bread with a little blackstrap molasses & Trader Joes peanut butter (eat over the sink!! molasses runs  

I love eating BTD & rarely ever "cheat" & when I do I don't think of it as such, BTD is going to be with me forever. I did not lose weight for the first few months but then all of a sudden realized I'd lost 15#.  I have about 8# more to go & if I was better about walking & Pilates etc. that would be gone.
Do you have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's near you? TJs is wonderful and affordable!! They have a brochure available on their gluten free foods.  

BTD is not a "diet" it's a way of eating for life and most people who are fairly compliant (and I am not 100%) don't EVER feel deprived - there are just too many good foods . . I feel especially lucky to be an A!!!

Thank you for expressing that, I think I might get a bit of that, two steps foreward, one back etc.Had  little bit of a headcahe the other day..stess I am sure.  But all in all I think I am doing ok then. I remember over the years when I start on a quest to get healthy with certain herbs etc. I get results very fast, always have been that way. I even once rid my kidney stones with pure lemon juice and some herbs...Dr.'s thought I was crazy...but it worked.

In regards to bingeing & cheat days- I started the diet, and allowed myself a whole binge cheat weekend, every 2-3 weekends- figured it would shock my metabolism (kind of like the ABCDE diet). Worked the first weekend. But after, my system became accustmomed to no wheat etc., and I can't binge- I get SO sick. I find the longer I'm on the diet, the harder it is to binge/cheat, because too much cheating can make me physically ill.

However, I think a "cheat day" can be great. But, what I think you should do, is pick ONE item or plate that you're not supposed to have, and have it on that day. For me, it usually means having a dessert at a restaurant (chocolate explosion dessert at BP's- cheesecake, chocolate mouse, caramel...mmmmmm....) but I'll only do it evey two weeks or so. If you make sure it's scheduled, I find it's easier, because you don't have to say "no," you can say "not now; next thursday." And it's only the one "meal" that I don't comply with- the rest of the day, I'm still compliant. And you can look forward to that cheat day, and think about what you really want to indulge in. (can also decrease guilt about eating whatever is served at family celebrations if you designated that day "cheat day"...)

Here's an update on my trials and tribulations of being on the BTD!!!!!

I'm now on Week 5 and I have now lost 13 pounds.  I feel great, I'm starting to look better - I even put a pair of jeans on today that I haven't worn in almost a year because "the dryer shrunk 'em."

I saw my Naturo on Wednesday and she's very pleased with my progress.  Unfortunately, I have had an acne break out which apparently is expected and I have a whole lot more gas and bloating then I'd like to admit.

So she has added some acidopholus (SP?) to my early morning regimen.  That stuff is fun.    

But I would rather deal with disgusting sour milk then leaky gut.....so here we go.

I have been able to live without vinegar - thanks for all your suggestions.  I don't crave meat but I still miss bananas and potatoes.  It's also a little hard to cook without tomatoes but I think I'm not afraid of this challenge anymore.  I've gotten creative with my meals and my partner has been great in supporting and trying all the fun new stuff.  Without him, I don't think I would be able to do this.

Well,

I started at 212 pounds and I'm now at 197.  I gained a few pounds back.

This past week my dad was diagnosed with cancer so really my well being has honestly taken 2nd place.  Not what I was expecting my holiday to be but I'm trying very hard to stay on top of things and at least make better choices during my bad moments.

Everyone knows food is therapy and I have been looking for comfort food a lot this week.  Listening to my dad's strengths and will to fight makes me feel little more at ease.  Believe me, I'm not making excuses but when you are faced with something like this, you really couldn't care less about yourself.  You will to live now rests with your love one.  I'm sure any of you who have been through this will understand.  If you haven't, parents go home and hug your children..tell them you're proud of them.  Kids, go home and call your parents..tell them you were thinking of them today.  Light a candle, thank God for your blessings and NEVER ..... EVER take a moment with your loved one for granted.

Thank you everyone for your interests.  I will keep you posted as progress goes on.

Happy Holidays if I don't post anytime soon.

Hi everyone.  It's been a while since I've posted so I decided to give you a little heads up.  Since my last post, I have gotten a huge number of compliments about how great I look.  Co workers keep asking me how I'm doing it.  ENTER BTD PLUG NOW!!!!!!

My dad begins radiation on Friday.  He's a little freaked - understandably so.  Everyday for 7 weeks he will have the joy of travelling from Oakville to Princess Margaret for treatment - BY HIMSELF!!!!!!  Man that ticks me off but that's a whole other story I don't have time to write about.

My boyfriend proposed.  We have set a wedding date of November 3, 2007.  This gives my dad to get well and be there for his little girl on her wedding day, walk her down the aisle and have a dance with her.  It also gives me time to lose the rest of the weight I've been hanging on to all this time.  I am now at 188.  That's right, 24 pounds gone!!!!!  I still have about 43 more to go but at this rate, I will be there before I know it!!!!!
