I've been overweight since the mid 1980's and hadn't been able to reverse the trend. Out of desperation and media bombardment, I gave the low carb thing a go. Four months of trying hard only made me sick. By the 4th of July, I have no idea how I was even able to function. In fact, I was barely functioning.
I had promised to be pyro crew on the 4th. While I felt like c**p, I went anyway and met this lady there that told me about ER4YT. I was instantly captivated. I hung on every word, I quizzed her for hours. I came home after the show and jumped online and went straight to amazon.com. I ordered (used) ER4YT, the complete encyclopedia, cook right and the book of lists for my type.
By the 6th, I couldn't take it anymore and stopped by a Barnes and Noble and picked up a new copy of the Type A Lists. It would be still a couple more days before my books would start coming in. I never looked back and never ate an “avoid” since.... until... but that's another story.
My IBS disappeared day 2, my hay fever stopped being an issue, I was experiencing energy that I've never had in my whole life felt. I'm just over 90 days into it and couldn't be happier.
Using the doctor database from this website, I found a doctor very close to me. He presented me with a binder with his findings and I have to tell you... I found this ER4YT and my doctor in the nick of time. According to my ECG, I had a heart attack (I never knew it but strongly suspect it happened in late June or early July) I have emphysema and many other problems. Is it any wonder I was feeling so poorly?
My doctor put me on Hawthorne immediately after seeing my ECG and ran a 2nd ECG approximately 2 weeks later. I’m happy to say there is improvement.
I've quit smoking on the 29th of September and am focusing on my general overall health.
I will never forget how I felt the day I finally had the book in my hands... liberated. I was just elated to have a simple guide book in my hands. I have to honestly say I never expected to stay true to the plan this long. Now I can say I have no desire to eat red meat at all. Being lactose intolerant, the cow dairy thing is no big deal. I discovered accidentally that I'm allergic to wheat and if I avoid it, I don't suffer from hay fever so that's not a issue any more. The vast improvement in my health has cured me from red meat for good.
I did read later that folks that jump in head 1st have a higher failure rate. I'm glad I have proven to be an exception so far.
Cybertooth, What an awesome story. We need more people like you to tell their stories. What an inspiration you are to people like me who have been trudging along for what seems like forever but didn't "dive in" all at once, so I didn't notice improvement "all at one" either.
Keep up the good work. And tell everyone you know what you're doing, when they ask!
I had no idea I had a heart attack, but I did know I was pretty sick. I did know I was dying. It was a no-brainer to dive in for me.
I started my own discussion board on the 9th of July pretty much as an interactive blog. and that's pretty much all it's been. Mostly me posting and getting frustrated with the lack of participation. I kept up with it and am glad I did. I can look back and see where I've been.
I want to say I really appreciate the quick responses here. I'll keep mine going for the sake of keeping a journal, but for things I need answers to, I know where to come

You were lucky and 'awake' enough to grasp the benefits for you! Your story touched me.. Really it gives me chickenskin sensations every time I listen to patients, friends, others who tell me of their regaing their health by the BTD.

Life wasn't perfect before the mid 80's by any stretch of the imagination, but something happened to me then that seemed to alter my course.
I was in the Navy, stationed in Guam. I started putting on a few pounds. Enough that got the "Fat Farm" involved. The head of the "Fat Farm" was a good friend of mine. She told me to go on the Cabbage Soup Diet. Using conventional wisdom, it seemed balanced to me so I did. It was the 1st diet I ever followed 100% and the last until this.
I carefully measured and weighed all my portions. My made my soup from scratch. I was a diet nazi.
Well, I gained 10 pounds. How could that be? She said there was no way any person following that diet could possibly gain weight. There weren't enough calories for anyone to gain weight. She concluded I was a liar and a cheat. Needless to say, that friendship didn't last the day. I think my metabolism was also a casualty. I've never been the same since... until now. A much better place to be!

Wow! That's great, and you were very fortunate to find such a wonderful doctor, too! Kudos for quitting smoking also! It is amazing how, when we start making pro-health changes, the momentum goes in that direction and we just want to do more and more to be kind to ourselves. Thanks for sharing your story!
Your story--especially the part about feeling so bad on a low-carb diet--also shows how, whatever the latest swing of the "diet pendulum", be it all the way to one side as it was for so long during the "high-carb, low-fat" era, or now all the way to the other side, in the current "low-carb" era, the only diet that really works for everyone is one that is customized, and that one is...drum roll, please...is the suspense killing ya?....what now, class?....thaaaat's right:

In the late 80's, when I was in the Navy and was putting on some weight... I was told to do the cabbage soup diet. I thought sure why not. I carefully weighted and measured all my portions. I made my soup from scratch. I was very strict on myself. I gained 10 pounds. I was accused of lying and cheating. It was devastating. I was told it was impossible to eat less calories than you burn and gain weight. Since I gained weight, I had to be lying about sticking to it.
I remember there were bagels and cream cheese and of course the soup was beef based and cabbage is a type A avoid. If I remember correctly it was pretty much all avoids.
I am convinced that experience was the begining of the end for me. I believe that I "permanently" messed up my metabolism. I've never been the same until ER4YT.
I never followed a fad since until low carb was smacking me in the face everywhere. I thought with all this $$ they are throwing at it, there must be something to it.
