I'm starting another course of anti-biotics, and have a great deal of stress in my life right now (death in family, estate problems), so I am trying to use some of the pertinent protocols.

I take a probiotic whenever I can fit it in, but I really want to know the best time to take it.  

I usually start the day with my thyroid medication as soon as I wake up, but not necessarily get up.  After a half hour I start taking other medications, e.g. loratadine & Ibuprofen, if needed, and Ritalin, usually spaced about 10 min. apart, until I eat breakfast.  This is mostly because I have to wait an hour after taking thyroid before breakfast.

I've read that many people take probiotics after waking up, before breakfast.  I've also read here that I should take it away from food, i.e. 3-4 hours after eating meat, and 1 hour before eating.  If I take it between breakfast and lunch, sometimes it is hard to take it in that time period.  I could also take it between lunch and dinner, if I don't have a snack then...

So, is it okay to take it in the evening before bed?  Or should I take it sometime before breakfast?
And how much does it interfere with the absorption/utilization of the thyroid and/or other medications?

Also, since I'm on another course of anti-biotics, should I take more than one a day?

Whenever I am on antibiotics, I take a probiotic about half-way between each of the antibiotic doses, and don't worry too much about them being away from foods...  

I figure that getting them in, even under less than ideal conditions, is better than not taking them.

I've never heard that probiotics interfere with drug or nutrient uptake...  Usually they assist with nutrient uptake...

If you take probiotics while on antibiotics please take them 'as far away' (time-wise) from the antibiotic as possible.

You may wish to discontinue the probiotics while taking antibiotics if it is a short course and creates issues with when and how you take other things or eat.

One thing you do not want to do is use the antibiotics to eradicate the probiotics rather than what they were prescribed to eradicate.

Although the results of this study sound impressive, I won’t be recommending probiotics every time I write a prescription for antibiotic. But I will advise some of my patients to try a probiotic. They include:
•people who have had antibiotic-associated diarrhea in the past. This is especially true for those that have had a C. difficile infection.
•people who must take antibiotics for more than 10 days. (Other doctors might use more than 5 days).
•people who have switched from one antibiotic to another over a relatively short period of time.

The researchers were not able to answer two very important questions:
•Which probiotics are the most effective in preventing and treating antibiotic associated diarrhea?
•Which antibiotics are more likely to cause diarrhea?

I take probiotics first thing in the morning and/or last thing before bed.  

If I must take antibiotics, I continue probiotics, taking them as far as possible away from the antibiotic.

Thank you to everyone who left replies.

I'm going to take the probiotics exactly between the am/pm and pm/pm antibiotics.  And hopefully they will be at least an hour before lunch and dinner, or whenever.

After the anti-biotics are over, I will try them before bed.  That should also get me to stop the late night snacking

Nadira, any good health food store should have rhodiola - either tincture or capsules.  If not, you can search online and order that way.  It's especially good for type O's.

Dr. D's Catechol contains L-Tyrosine, Rhodiola, and other ingredients. Please read about it in there.

For Rhodiola alone Solgar is excellent (expensive). Vitacost sells it by some manufactureres. They also produces one under Vitacost label, which would be of the cheapest deals, but Vitacost themselves are not corn-free certified.

I'm finally over my anti-biotics  

I'm now taking probiotics between breakfast and lunch.

Do the type-specific Polyflora really do a better job than others?  I currently taking a probiotic with 8 different types.  The O type Polyflora only has 2 kinds of probiotics.

I am happier taking the per-type Polyflora than I was taking any other probiotic I could find...  Dr. D. has said it is a combination of both the specific bacteria and the pre-biotic that is included that makes the difference...  Bacteria exhibit blood-type specificity, so it does make a difference which are present, as the wrong ones will fight the good ones.

I have taken probiotics for many years, and the Polyflora (blood type specific) has been the very best for me.  I had my doubts at first, but I have no doubts anymore - actually after the first week, I could tell the difference.

I think non-blood type probiotics are a waste of money and at best do very little of what's expected of them. I took the best OTC versions for years before BTD, and the switch to BT specific made a profound difference. If I'd only known then what I know now.

It is so true blood type based polyflora is the best.

I have taken probiotic recommended by doctor or best rated brand but I can see the huge difference after taking Polyflora A.

Reading your post I decided yesterday to dare, and instead of taking 2 capsules of Polyflora O twice daily + 1 NOW Probiotic-10 capsule (50 billion each) twice daily, started taking 6 capsules of Polyflora O twice daily. I am waiting to see how it goes. It figures: this way I get 18 billion daily of the 2 strains I do need, instead of the 100 billion daily of the NOW 10 strains. The quantity I get of the 2 strains needed by O may be even larger in Polyflora than what I've been getting from the NOW probiotic. But the crucial point is, that I don't take anymore of the other strains, which are, or may be, practically harmful to my gut.  

I do hope this works. It means 3 jars of Polyflora monthly.

Since she was already taking Polyflora O + the other probiotic, the "battle" should have been ongoing - but we don't know who was winning...  Depending on what the balance is now, will depend on whether there is any additional "fight" or whether the gut can just settle down and work...  

It is also possible that there was never any real fight, but that the off-type bacteria were processing out some of the good and contributing harmful waste...

yaeli - the "fight" (if there is/was one) would be between the different bacteria - good and not-so-good for your type...

I have been taking a probiotic for a zillion years and tried the NAP product for two months a while back - before SWAMI - and couldn't tell a bit of difference. I'm always interested in making improvements, though, so I recently ordered more bottles from NAP. I can't remember the last time I had a stomach virus - probably when our children were young which would have been over thirty years ago. Two colds in about the same length of time. So I will be really curious to see if I see any results - who knows I might even be able to eat superfood cheese without it bothering me for three days! That would be sure-fire proof that the stuff works best!!

Thanks! But still I did anyhow: seeking urgent help I added this enormous quantity of probiotics by NOW with the undesirable strains. At the time I was indeed very grateful, as this did the job very successfully. Later I added "Daily Essential Enzymes" (by Source Naturals), and a couple of days ago I started to try to discard the NOW probiotics. Looking forward

FYI: prebiotics actually are more important than probiotics. The probiotics in your gut need foods to stay alive, good sources are rice bran, oat bran and fruits. Taking probiotics on a daily base is very helpful and healthy, but theoretically it is unnecessary if you're consuming prebiotics. (There will always remain good bacteria in your gut, they just need enough food to multiply.)

I've always wondered about this....Are you supposed to first kill off bad bacteria and then take probiotics?  Or would massive doses of probiotics actually crowd out bad bacteria and put you ahead
with good?  Nobody knows what percentage of bad bacteria they have in their guts....and adding massive
doses of good bacteria suddenly....wouldn't that cause bloat and major gut upheaval?

I guess what I'm wondering....do you go slowly with upping good bacteria or is it better to be aggressive when trying to balance gut flora?

You should make your gut a pleasant environment for the good bacteria and unpleasant for the bad ones. The goods ones will then simply overcrowd the bad ones. And that's done by simply eating the right stuff.

The probiotic supplements do help a little, but don't forget that the amount of good bacteria in such a probiotics-capsule is only very very tiny compared to the total number of good bacteria in a healthy gut.

By the way; probiotic foods (like home-made kefir, fresh sauerkraut, miso soup, etc.) are much better than probiotic supplements because then you can be sure all those bacteria are alive, and moreover you'll ingest tens if not hundreds or thousands of times the amount of good bacteria compared to taking a probiotic-supplement.

Also; it's virtually impossible to kill all bacteria in your gut (either good or bad) so don't bother trying

Thanks for all the info!   I guess I'm going to order some Polyflora O very soon.  

Should this be taken twice a day?  and 2 capsules?  Or is this only when your body is stressed, like with antibiotics.

I have the Rhodiola now (by NOW).  How many should I take each day?  with all meals?

yaeli, I've been taking a NOW probiotic also, it has 8, 7 of the same in yours.  Mine is almost gone.  I'm going to pitch it because I recently bought one with L. rhamnosus and L. acidophilus.  When my Polyflora comes maybe I can take 1 kind in the a.m. and 1 in the p.m....

Dr. D recommends 2 capsules twice daily. This recommedation is always the same in all the Health Protocols which include Polyflora, incl. in the Antibiotic Support Protocol.

Hi Nadira, as explained to me here above, if the probiotic preparation that I take contains strains which are not beneficial for O's, these can be detrimental to my gut health, and they should best be avoided altogether.

One trick that Lola uses is to use the powder in the Polyflora capsule as a starter for food that she cultures.  With the multiplication of the microorganisms in the cultures she can get quite a dose with fewer capsules.

I am not sure how much Polyflora Lola takes a day but I think it is less than twelve capsules.

When I first switched from various other brands to the Polyflora, I took a couple 2 or 3 times daily away from food. After several years of Polyflora, I have reduced my dose to one capsule before bed and one capsule first thing upon awakening.  I have a good internal garden going, and it shows by the health of my intestines and my stools.

I've yet to take any of the supps Dr D'Adamo sells... I have previously taken a product with Lactobacillus rhamnosus in it & found it worked well, but whenever I've checked out the other ingredients in Polyflora O I get worried re the banana extract, the brewers yeast & the chicory (all of which I have problems with) Also nervous re the Larch arabinogalactan as I don't do well on galactans at all?!

Thanks Andrea and C_Sharp for the good advice. Use of Polyflora for fermenting is brilliant. I am reluctant to ferment vegetables because I never know how much salt to use - I put too much. Have to dare again.

I drink kombucha tea every day, and I already bought once a jar of kimchi by the same manufacturer, who seems just trustworthy. Awesome products.

On Thursday I had a treatment by my precious doctor and asked her to look into my irises. She told me they show that I am taking too much probiotics! ha ha She said that this stimulates the gut and is causing too much BMs. Praise the Lord! We made a plan to quiet the front, and I don't have to take the huge quantity of probiotics that I planned before. I'll up a bit my essential enzymes instead. {{deep sigh of relief}}
