I was diagnosed from a nose swab with flu tonight at a CareNow urgent care facility here. My onset was Saturday at noon. The MD on shift prescribed Tamaflu.
Anyone know anything about it? One thing I read said it must be taken within 40 hours of onset which I'm past by about 8 hours. Risks? Side effects?
Thanks!

So sorry to hear that Tom.
I don't know anything about Tamaflu, but you should immediately start getting Vitamin C at regular intervals (no tablets, capsule or powder). 500mg every 1 to 2 hours. More than 500mg at a time would likely be wasted and flushed out in your urine, but you need to keep dosing very frequently to allow your immune system to kill the virus.
My 9 year old daughter had a bug with fever, headache, lethargy etc. a couple weeks ago and I did the Vitamin c protocol with her during between 10 A.M. and 9 P.M. and that night she slept great and felt fine the next day.
I know it's hard to keep up on Vitamin C during the night because you'll want to sleep, but if you find yourself awake take it anyway. Since you're an O you shouldn't be too concerned about taking it with food, but if it does upset your stomach take with a small compliant snack or beverage.
Let us know how you're doing soon. |

BUT why ??? I live in a civilized country with a modern health system and nobody would ever prescripe tamilfu unless you had some very serious health problems It is not particular efficient -it only takes aprox 1 day of the period of sickness. it has lots of bad side effects.... Get back in bed Take high doses of vital C and D3 stay warm- drink hot herbal teas. Eat lightly. and you´ll be fine in a week |

I wouldn't touch it! Get to bed, plenty of lemon juice and hot water, Proberry, Have a hot bath before you go to bed, even put a bit of Epsom salts in it. sleep and rest and warm are best.
look into alternatives to the tamiflu and read about the side effects and Google it |

I've taken two tami-flu caps 12 hrs apart with 8 more to go. I actually feel worse this morning, a little spacey. I stopped taking Advil last evening and my fever now is 101.0. I did go to cvs and purchase vitamins C, D and E so I can take more. I still have all my btd and gtd supps. I had small serving of wild salmon with a kale soup I make in my vitamin. It's just pressure cooked kale and hot water blended. Also made hot tea and have more room temp water. |

Called another doctor on shift at the CareNow urgent care facility this morning and he said tamiflu can still have value started up to 72 hours after onset. I started it about 56 hours after onset. Just took Advil again. |

I'm personally hesitant to take any meds to lower fevers. Fever is one way the body handles infections, and I don't want to interfere with the body's immune response. I do use advil sometimes for headaches or other pain that doesn't involve fever, though. |

Sending you healing thoughts, Tom. I hope you're soon feeling better The only person I know who ever took Tamiflu was blood type B...and she didn't sleep for 3 days because of the severe insomnia from this drug.. It's one of the known side effects. http://www.drugs.com/sfx/tamiflu-side-effects.html |

I STILL wish we had a thumb's up option! There would be lot of them on this thread! Albeit, a downer or two - Tamiflu - a downer! |

We've all got the flu. Again. We had it the week before Thanksgiving too. Evidently this is a different strain.
We're taking elderberry extract (syrup), vitamin C, Herbal Expec for the chest congestion, and I'm rubbing everybody down with essential oils.
I did finally give my oldest (nearly 10) some children's Ibuprophen. Her head, back and leg pain was very intense and she couldn't even sleep. This relieved it enough so that she could rest. The second (7 1/2) has it, but it's not so bad. The third currently has a fever of 102.9 under her arm, which is really 103, which is really 104. I believe it'll break during the night tonight. She's not complaining at all and is really in good spirits despite the fever. The 3 y.o. has the sniffles, but that's it. DH shows no sign of anything, as usual. Lucky B. |

Shoot. Now her fever is 103.2 under the arm. Which is really 104.2. I think I'm going to give her some Ibuprophen. I don't like doing it, but I think it would be best at this point. |

I would just make her comfortable. let the body do what it's supposed to.
In all the times emily has had any cold or flu or temperature in the last 4 years we have never used anything like ibuprofen. its a poison. |

I don't give ibuprofen to feverish kids (or feverish adults for that matter.) I do use ibuprofen for pain when there's no fever present. I would also use it during fever if the pain is keeping somebody from sleeping- like what you did for the 10yo last night. I'm generally not one for medicating "because the thermometer shows a higher number than I like."
However, there is one use of medicating fevers: it's a diagnostic tool. If the fever comes down with ibuprofen or acetaminophen, then it's less serious than a fever that won't come down with medication. Doctors sometimes ask for that kind of information. If the fever CAN come down with meds, even if the meds aren't actually being used, doctors worry less.
It sounds like you already medicated the 2nd littlest one, and probably took her temperature again after the meds kicked in. Now you have that information and don't need to keep medicating her. |

If she's not feeling bad, I would hold off. Once you hit 105, then action needs to be taken. |

All of them (except the youngest, who has somehow escaped this) ran fevers of at least 102 the entire night. They're still between 102-103. I'm just keeping them hydrated. It's really just the oldest, the canary in the coal mine, who is miserable. She's crying and moaning and complaining and can't sleep. I told her that if she could wait it out, the fever would burn off the virus and she'd get better. But if we keep knocking it back down with Ibuprophen, it's not good. Her body needs the fever to fight it off.

Elderberry hands down is what one takes to prevent the flu, pneumonia and rhino virus. I just stocked up on Elderberry jelly, Elder-Echinacea tea bags, and I also keep a bottle of Elderberry syrup in my fridge for a quick tsp if I feel symptomatic.
If you eat Elderberry jelly regularly, you won't catch the flu. I just cured my son's girlfriend the other day with a cup of Elder-Echinacea tea. She had laryngitis type cold for a few days. One cup of tea and her laryngitis was gone. Even though it doesn't work on all cold like viruses it works on the aforementioned ones.
I learned this from Dr. D. Elderberry kills the flu virus, pneumonia virus and the rhino virus. He did a article on it back in 1998 or so? I wish I can find it and post it.
So, if you already have the flu, taking Elderberry will cure you 50%-75% faster than if you didn't take it at all. |

I am TOTALLY in agreement with Mayflowers suggestion of Elderberry...which is Dr D's Proberry. Two weeks ago my hubby got the flu/cold and was shaking like a leaf and all of his bones ached. He doubled up on proberry and the next day he was feeling pretty good. I take it everyday during the flu season. Just wonderful stuff. The Proberry extract is excellent for the throat also. Debra |

Tom, I hope you get better soon. We each have to decide what's best for us when we get sick.
When I get sick with the flu, I get hit hard. It always progresses into something worse.
I came down with the flu on Dec 4th. I was taking everything for it. Proberry, Astragalus, ARA Plus, Nettles, Deflect, Bromelain, Polyflora, Boswellia, & MSM. I ordered Redoxa and Collinsonia Plus since I was out of those supplements. I had a temp (never over 101) for six days. I agree with ruthiegirl. I don't take asprin to reduce temp unless I absolutely have to. Fever helps to fight off infection.
My coughing was so bad, I was getting burning chest pains behind my sternum. I finally had to take Mr. KK's pain meds, the chest pain was so bad.
I finally saw a Dr. in a clinic on Dec 13th, since I still had horrible head and lung congestion... and that chest pain with hard coughing. I got Zithromax and a cough syrup and an abuterol inhaler. He diagnosed me with asthma related bronchitis.
I didn't need the inhaler for very long but I still have trouble sleeping because I'm still congested in my lungs and sinuses. I have to sleep sitting up. I'm still on all the supplements (as well Polyvite, Gastro D, Intrinsa) and I expect I'll be taking them for sometime to come.
Last time I got sick, I had bronchitis for over four months. I'm hoping this time it doesn't last that long and the anti inflammatories I'm taking will help resolve it, sooner.
Sharing with the best of intentions. |

I just read this using Dr. D.'s Alternapedia: "Vitamin D appears to have effects on immune function.[32] It has been postulated to play a role in influenza with lack of vitamin D synthesis during the winter as one explanation for high rates of influenza infection during the winter." Interesting indeed! |
