I'm a type A "Teacher", non-traditional student. I have a very heavy class load this semester and I'm already (after only one week in) feeling overloaded and stressed.
I would like recommendations for supplements. I have no serious health issues, I'm a little low on iron last time it was checked.
I am on a very tight budget.
I'm already thinking courtiguard and attentia, ARA6 and Trehalose. Anything else that you all think would help me through this semester? |

GR,
Before the "frazzle has you feeling like you're on the fringe" try a few of the Bach flower essences. I carry around a few in my purse. Sometimes I just take a few drops without water.
Read the descriptions and see what would help you out the most. They are very specific.
Also, when you feel like "a whirling dervish" try alternate nostril breathing or extend your stomach muscle outward and hold for about 4-6 seconds. You can do this anytime, anywhere.
Sometimes these remedies don't feel like they're working but they are and do help.
Also, take a mental break for ten minutes and do some "daytime dreaming".
I hope some of this helps. I learned this at times of duress.

I soooo agree with Joy! I learned that not only alt/nostril but slow, purposeful, "belly out on inhale/ belly deflate on exhale"/ 3 part (gut, ribs, chest) lifting from lower gut all the way up to clavicle, then reverse in lowering ,breathing calms me in mere minutes! I love the daydream idea! My mind will naturally sort of "space out" when I am overwhelmed anyway. Also, the physical act of just going outside/into nature/interact with an animal goes a long way to help de-stress. I strongly recommend cortiguard! Iron rich artichokes, spinach, eggs, too. GR, I feel for you because I know stress has been my worst enemy. Over my lifetime I have experienced hair loss, nervous twitches, weight gain and loss solely due to stress! I hope you are able to find the best "relief" for you! |

I looked at the Type Base and saw nothing about Valerian Root. Unless it's on SWAMI, there is nothing for any blood type about Valerian Root. Valerian root will help calm you down if you take just 1 tablet 3X a day or drink the tea. My mother usd to give it to me for nervous tension when I grew up in Germany. |

I practiced alternate nostril breathing on my walk this morning. I woke up very stressed, I'm clamer now. I will get through this one step at a time, just like always. |

Make your decompression as important as any aspect of your health. Be disciplined about this, whether routines are met or not. Make a distinct separation between your mind at work, and your mind at rest. |

Theanine is a favorite supplement of mine - an amino acid from green tea, which clears and refreshes the mind. It is helpful, whether mentally pushing for exams or needing to unwind in the evening for gentle sleep. "a unique amino acid found almost exclusively in green tea that exerts beneficial effects on brain metabolism.* Theanine induces relaxation without causing drowsiness, as measured by increased generation of alpha-waves.* Theanine may improve learning ability and sensations of pleasure by affecting dopamine and serotonin neurotransmitters in the brain. Also, theanine exerts protective effects on the brain by mitigating glutamate toxicity." http://www.jarrow.com/product/490/Theanine_200There are many different brands. |

Sip Right Type A tea has a calming effect on me. I drink a cup after dinner and save my green tea for earlier in the day due to the caffeine.. Tranquility Base I like. Low intake of sugar, high intake of fruits and veggies/high antioxidant foods. Yoga, alternate nostril breathing, a warm bath with Epsom Salts. Nutritional yeast. Inositol, melatonin before bed, high tryptophan foods like peanuts, turkey,, eggs, cheese, hazelnuts, tofu, tuna, beans. Sometimes just lying on the floor close to a sofa, with a rolled towel under my neck, my feet on a sofa cushion and slow deep breathing. Covering my eyes with a washrag that has lavender essential oil sprinkled on it and listening to soft music totally unwinds me. Remember to stay in the moment. Reminding yourself the difference between a little annoyance and a major tragedy. Putting everything in perspective and realizing you're a smart woman and you will NOT fail~ {{{{{hugs))))) GR....You will be okay~ |

Bach Elm is for "feeling overwhelmed" when you're capable of the work but just "have too much on your plate right now." Whatever other remedies are useful for your personality, Elm is probably a good addition this semester. |

Ruthiegirl,
I find the Bach flower essences amazing. I asked a lady in one of the local HFS that I knew worked there for awhile how do they make these essences for such specific emotional situations. She just shrugged and said "I don't know". I find it rather amazing but reliable at the same time.

Grey Rabbit,
Can you read between the lines? If so, some of this may be helpful for you. It's always a case of take what you need and leave the rest.
I'm referrring to a book that is so "outside the box" as a self help book and I might add has a spiritual twist to it. It is called "The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Timothy Gallwey. What did a book about tennis have to do with my job? Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Yet I read between the lines and although I didn't gain much knowledge to help me in that particular job, perhaps I gained a little wisdom. I had a job that was so challenging in its lack of knowledge that an amoeba could do it. All it took was one brain cell.
This book helped me keep my sanity. Enough about that.
There is so much in it but please let me give you just a few of the passages that you could utilize in your own situation. I hope I don't jump around too much that it sounds like a jumble. I'm going to try to be concise and succinct but I'm trying to give you information that you might want to use in the near future.
OK, back to the game of tennis (remember don't take this literally but read between the lines). Excerpt: As one achieves focus, the mind quiets. As the mind is kept in the present, it becomes calm. Focus means keeping the mind now and here. Relaxed concentration is the supreme art because no art can be achieved without it, while with it, much can be achieved. One cannot reach the limit of one's potential in tennis or any endeavor without learning it.
I swear this is in the same book. He's now using an analogy of a surfer. Why does a surfer wait for the big wave when he can get "in the flow" with a medium size wave? Because it is those very obstacles, the size and churning power of the wave, which draw from the surfer his great effort.
In other words, the more challenging the obstacle he faces, the greater the opportunity for the surfer to discover and extend his true potenital. The potential may have always been within him, but until it is manifested in action, it remains a secret hidden from himself. The obstacles are a very necessary ingredient to this process of self-discovery. Note that the surfer in this example is not out to prove himself,; he is not out to show himself or the world how great he is, but is simply involved in the exploration of his talents. He directly experiences his own resources and thereby increases his self-knowledge. Note: I hope this is encouraging for you as you start on your new journey.
Another excerpt: When one is emotionally attached to results that he can't control, he tends to become anxious and then try too hard. But one can control the effort he puts into winning. One can always do the best he can at any given moment.
Another except: The cause of most stress can be summed up by the word attachment. Freedom from stress does not necessarily involve giving up anything, but rather being able to let go of anything, when necessary, and know that one will stillbe all right. It comes from being more independent - not necessarily more solitary, but more reliant on one's own inner resources for stability. The cornerstone of stability is to know that there is nothing wrong with the essential human being.
Let me stop here. Finding and rereading parts of this book has been catharic for me as I'm going through some challenges myself.
I hope something resonates for you. We are wishing you well as your journey begins.
Joy

Grey Rabbit, I too am studying and have had a very heavy load to deal with. Bach flower elm was a godsend for me (as per Ruthie's suggestion) and so was a herbal mix containing lemon balm (along with some adaptogens like Rhodiola and Withania). I must admit that I didn't impute much power to lemon balm - in my studies of herbal medicine it seemed to me to be so lightweight. Boy, was I wrong! I know that it was the lemon balm that added such a punch to my mix because I have been on the others for quite a while. . . lemon balm was a recent addition. Lemon balm is an anxiolytic among others things - great for the student under immense pressure! |

Great suggestions from everyone here, but I might add that physical exercise can be just as stress busting as anything else. Engaging in creative things like music or art helps too...perhaps a concert or a visit to a museum in the arts or natural history. Also don't forget physical labor such as a building or renovation project this counts as physical exercise as well and allows you to "get out of your head" for a while. |

Yay another Trekkie! I belong to the USS SpiritWolf, based in Houston Texas. We are part of Starfleet International. Do you belong to a ship?
GR,
Have you tried Valerian Root? I think I made a mention of it when you first opened the thread but never received a response. How about a nice long soak in the tub, if you have one, I usually use Chamomile or Lavender based gels. |
