Did anyone else see NBC Dateline's report on the deficiencies in some supplement testing labs?  Very scary stuff.  One example a liquid vitamin supplement maker mixed up milligrams with micrograms on the ingredient Selenium Dioxide and the testing lab didn't catch it.  Consumers who bought and used the supplement lost their hair.

Scary stuff, not sure how common the problem is at supplement testing labs.  Anyone know?

Tom1964,

I saw the segment and indeed it was scary.  I went on the FDA's website to try and get a definitive listing of herbal supplements to avoid.  There is alot of information there and you have to sort it out.

The main supplements in question seem to be bodybuilding supplements, weight loss supplements, and sexual function supplements.  Most supplements on the market seem to be thoroughly tested by reputable laboratories.

But, it did happen and that is the scary thing.   The lab tested it on some employees and some of them got violently ill.  Yet no one stopped the product from going to market.  The amount of selenium dioxide added to the product was in milligrams when it should have been in micromilligrams.  Big difference.  Big mistake.

Labeling is misleading because alot of ingredients can be listed under various names.

Caveat Emptor!

mistakes can and do happen, but the fight is mostly about getting all over the counter sups to be come associated with big pharma so more can be charged and supposedly monitored.

I feel safer with tried and tested older supps and less messed with stuff.  anytime that someone needs to alter it, it becomes a great deal more questionable.. the push to bring every spice under the heading of 'meds' is paid for with mega bucks..

a single or a misttake of any sort can and will happen sooner or later, mistakes is how people learn.. make them and it becomes experience from which to learn.. the scary part is the cover up..

Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!

Met this guy Donald Miller ( he was at the last IfHI conference) who works for the government testing supplements -- how he found the BTD was by testing Dr. D's supplements and seeing how they out performed anything he had ever seen.

Stick to Dr. D's stuff-- don't waste your money use things that are targeted for you and that work.

I saw the segment and it was indeed scary.  Labs saying they tested stuff and they didn't bother.  Some of the people featured have left threatening aftereffects.  We're very lucky to have Dr. D's supplements.  We know we can trust them.

Dr. D's stuff is high quality. It isn't the only thing I use, but quality is super important as is effectiveness. About 95% of the stuff out there is junk, IMO.

I sooooo agree with Andrea, Jane and AKArtlover!
The only supplement I take other than NAP's is my Vitamine D3...and I don't take it regularly as I live in a climate with 350 days of sunshine a year...and I am outside all the time!
Just have to say I love my basic pack for BT A, proberry, quercetin, collinsonia, helix and cortiguard. I also feel energetic after my protein powder for A shake to which I add harmonia.

I'm all NAP supplements all day, all week, all month, all year   That won't change.

I could write a book on how not to make a crappy supplement. Most companies just don't want to part with the extra money or don't have the know-how.

The adoption of the metric measurement system was not one of the best choices ...

Jeepers, metric is very hard if you haven't been brought up with it - hard enough if you have Altho' tbh I think the major problem stems from using recipes, ingredients from the few places that still measure in the imperial system & trying to convert!!!

Dr. D takes and prescribes his own supplements.

Here is Gary Null health guru-- his own supplements almost killed him.

I guess he merely put his name on the bottle
