Firstly...to explain...

Quote from Dr.D: "Autophagy (‘self-eating’) is a catabolic (breakdown) process used by cells to degrade and remove some of their internal components deemed to be unnecessary or undesirable."

Now....here's the point...

Quoted from Dr.D's post in (n=1): "One interesting agent with well-recognized effects on autophagy is the natural disaccharide sugar trehalose, a sugar produced by bonding two glucose molecules together in a way that differs significantly from the sugar on top of a jelly donut. Trehalose is found in many organisms, including bacteria, yeast, fungi, insects, invertebrates, and plants. It functions to protect the integrity of the cell against various environmental stresses like heat, cold, desiccation, dehydration, and oxidation by preventing the screwing-up of the cell’s protein insides.

Extracting trehalose used to be a difficult and costly process, but recently an inexpensive extraction technology has allowed for its use in a broad spectrum of applications. Trehalose prevents cells from dehydrating, a phenomena that disrupts much of the cell’s insides in way that are not reparable. Trehalose-treated cells seem to resist this because the trehalose ‘splints’ their guts in place, so that when the cells get a chance to rehydrate they come back good-as-new. Dehydrated cells are common with aging, as the aging process tends to thin out the cell membrane, making it harder and harder for the cell to maintain its internal water balance.

Trehalose has been accepted as a novel food ingredient under the GRAS terms in the U.S. and the EU. Trehalose has also found commercial application as a food ingredient. It is available in dietary supplement form http://www.4yourtype.com/prodinfo.asp?number=NP067" (Quote end)

I didn't know where to post this to ask the question: Can Trehalose be used to sweeten foods?

Yes, probably too expensive to use in regular cookin/ baking but so are the other healthy
options. So rather than taking it as a supplement could one use it to substitute 'sugar' and so 'kill two birds with one stone'? (As in use a supplement you'd want to use anyway while cutting out 'sugar' in a recipe where you'd still use it despite that we all know one shouldn't   )

PS: I highly recommend reading the whole blog- it explains the above in 'plain english' and makes you want to learn more!  http://n-equals-one.com/blogs/
There are so many things to know and explore about our bodies and so many more facets to 'Eating Right' than I ever imagined....WOW.

My suggestion is to taste a bit of it to see whether it has a sweet flavor.  If it does, then it would be useful for uncooked items.
You might want to research whether heating will cause any known negative effects, but I doubt it since it occurs naturally in plants.  Next would be to add it to something cooked or baked to see if the flavor changed during those processes.

You might have more problem with "overdose" than with anything else...  Remember that most things in over-abundance become problems...

Dr D
Here's a totally anecdotal story. I've been watching an age spot develop slowly on the right side of my nose, probably the result of sun exposure from sailing. I've been taking trehalose (1 tblsp daily in grapefruit juice for about two weeks). Yesterday Martha remarked that the spot seems to have lightened to the point of almost disappearing. I noticed another one on the back of my right hand also lightening.

Trehalose can be used in cooking and baking. Here is an example of a product that is currently being actively advertised online:

http://www.basspro.com/LEM-Tre.....39385ef4

But I would not use Dr. D.'s product for this since it contains other ingredients and is designed to be a supplement rather than for cooking.

When buying Trehalose from other places, be a little careful about the source, most of the time it is just corn starch cut up into two glucose units.

It has a sweet taste but it is not strong enough to do much to sweeeten food items, in my personal experience.

Trehalose is about 45% as sweet as sucrose (sugar at the grocery store).

I like it mixed with grapefruit juice!  It would be really nice to be able to bake with it.  I wonder if it could be used in combination with agave so you could reduce the amount of that. I find agave too addicting.

I'm hoping I have the same result Dr. D had with a brown spot on my face disappearing.  I've been taking a small amount everyday for a few weeks.

I have been taking this as a supplement for about two weeks.  I probably won't notice anything but at least I will be doing some good with my cells.

Positive thinking, NHG. If you think you won't notice anything, then you won't notice anything.

Think about how awesome it is and how you feel better right after you take it.

One thing many people don't realize is that the body will take care of priorities... It may be that there is some important healing that is higher priority in your body than in others... The proof is in the persistence.

I would think it's an internal deodorant due to its' effect on the cells.

Well, thanks guys for all the links!

Sure made for some very interesting reading- very intrigued with the age spots and the anti 'old wo/man smell' bath

Being able to use it in baking is great, because I do miss the cakes and biscuits even if I don't want to eat them for the sweetness- they are just more of a treat than eating an egg or a slice of beef

So where to get my hands on some....

C_Sharp, what source should it come from? Would it say on the packet?

I don't think I can get it here in Ireland- might have to order it in from the States...which would be a good brand to get?

Thanks!

This is great as a supplement but way too expensive to cook with!

So, trehalose is two glucose molecules C6H12O6, nothing more, nothing less. Please explain to me why it matters how, or from what, it is made? Dr. D, really would love some input on this one.
