I am starting this thread as an off-shoot of sorts from the thread - 'constipation'.

For those who have chicory in their foods to eat, I just found a container that I bought awhile ago but did not take it and now my Swami says it's a superbeneficial - as well as aiding constipation it has such a wide array of benefits - digestive problems, reduces diabetes, heart, glycogen in the liver, gout etc...

The one I have is called PACHA - Produced in France. I made some in a Bodum and it was lovely. As good as the dandelion powder they not longer make. Most coffee subtsitutes have rye, barley and other avoids for some and this is 100% roasted chicory.

Those giving up coffee may be impressed with this, it states : "compared to real coffee, chicory stimulates the nervous system by sustaining the mental capabilities and concentration. ...fighting the sleepy states and asthenia".

Thanks for the link Dianne, I had no idea what all chicory was good for. I stopped coffee and switch around 8months ago. I'm glad I did.

Dianne, did you drink a full cup of chicory?  Was it bitter?  Did you add sugar and cream?  I have no experience with ground chicory except as added to coffee.

Chicory is a diamond on my swami, but I haven't explored it yet.  I like the coffee with chicory that you get at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, but coffee is an avoid for me now (and so are the beignets   ).  Thanks for the link, Dianne.

NewHampshireGirl - I drink it black. But if you are allowed dairy, it would be yummy with it. I don't find it bitter, I think because it's roasted it's rounds out the flavour. After reading all that it is good for, I'll make sure to have my two cups a day.

Thank you, Dianne.  I'll look for it in the natural foods store.  That's a lot of chicory in one cup and I'll probably be nervous trying it out but here goes..............!

So, can you please tell me how to use it?  Is it brewed like coffee?  Strained?  I guess I need
detailed instructions.

I have a drip, 5 cup coffee pot. I put about 1 heaping tablespoon into the filter, which is about the same as I did coffee.. hit the button. until after my first cup that's about all I'm able to get done in morning. I set it up the night before.

Chicory for me is only a neutral but is used as a genoharmonic combination, so I'd like to try it. Is
it bitter?  Does it resemble the taste of coffee?

It taste like coffee to me, and once I got BD to try it she said the same thing. For my WH he says it's more bitter, but drinks if just fine. He adds honey,or agave and cream. I add cream. not sure what BD adds.

This version you make like instant coffee - I have mine with a dash of agave and some hemp milk.  It's slightly bitter, but coffee is too - to my taste is comparable on the bitterness stakes.  It tastes somehow richer than coffee though.

Thanks Andy...the instant version looks so much easier but for now, I ordered chicory from nutsonline because I needed other items as well..  Will look for Prewetts if I get to an international food store anytime soon.  It's always good to share your favorite items.  

I just use Polyflora O. It has chicory. It also comes with banana for the synergistic prebiotic effects.

I wanted to share this product.  It's inulin from chicory root.  It's a prebiotic.  I have inulin from another
company (also uses chicory)...It tastes sweet....Probably works similarly to larch powder, only it's got the
FOS from chicory.

Did you notice the shipping costs more than the product?  I almost choked but I ordered it anyway.

I usually order other stuff at the same time.  I've never notice it being outrageous. I use the ups cheap one and it usually comes in within 3 working days. When I say outrageous I'm saying it's about the same with any company. But I don't really have a choice. The Fedex and UPS guys know us on a first name bases.  

If I was close enough I'd see if I could get my local HFS to order it from one of her companies, but all I every see there is somekind of blend usually with coffee.  With nutonline I get most of my dried fruit, pumkin seeds, some of my dried spices, and herbs. For me to drive to Little Rock where the only Whole Foods in Arkansas is would take me about 2hr drive each way. I'd lose a whole day, and with the cost of gas. (3.35) I'll just pay whatever they want for shipping.

The chicory arrived in two days!  I had my first mug of it last night and it was delicious!  I did add cream and a teensy bit of sugar and I'm pleased to say it's a great substitute for coffee.  Thanks so much, Dianne for introducing this subject and thanks to you Deblynne3 for the nutsonline web site.  I shall definitely be drinking chicory every day, now!  I am sooooo happy!

What a wonderful thread! Another big plus for herbal treatment! I saw where chicory was a live food diamond for me, but I just hadn't gotten into anything about it yet. I hate coffee and always have but this sounds very interesting even if I have to take it in a capsule. Thanks, Dianne, for your post about this wonderful herb!

I'm using the Geno type book right now and I'm a gatherer.  Chicory root is listed as a bene under live foods on page 213.


I haven't seen the leaves, but have you tried iherb.com?  They have alot of stuff. I'll ask my HFS if she knows of brands that might carry it. I'll be by there tonight. Untill then maybe someone else will know.  

This is interesting. I'm finding mostly root. Which I believe grows wild here in Arkansas.  I found a place that sales chicory leave seeds. They make it sound like a special type. It grows like lettuce.  Now I'm not sure what the chicory that we are using the root looks like, but there are many pic online that I can look ant. I think I'll order the seeds, and I will learn what that plant should look like. (if it grows) Then I'd know for sure it they are one and the same. Then perhaps I can find the chicory root plant it in the wild. They might not even be the same plant.  

I will keep look for a brand of dried leaves.

sweet as it was....It's good..I can't say I'm crazy about it...Was never a coffee lover....It's good for a change from herbal tea...and it does make a pretty good genoharmonic combo...

I did buy chicory in the supermarket....looks like strange curly lettuce...I think I read that radicchio
is in the same family as chicory....bought some of that too....chopped them together...made a salad
dressing....a little on the bitter side....but still edible.

I kind of think chicory as  raw green salad vegetable would be best used in combination with a lot of other salad greens.  It's got a strong bitter flavor.

After reading this thread, just ordered some from 'sweet marias' in california.  Two pounds ground and roasted for $13.50.  I am anxious to try it!  If it tastes anything like coffee, I will be thrilled.

Chloe,   I'll be keeping my eyes open this spring, I've seen flowers that look very much like those in the pics.  They are very much like dandelion.  I've noticed many of the greens for gatherers are bitters, so I'm not surprised it is a ben. for me.

According to Typebase, Radicchio is a "red-leafed Italian chicory"; but I don't know if that's what your SWAMI is referring to.

My mistake, chicory ground from Sweet Marias was $9.50 for two pounds.  The Nigerian coffee was $13.50.  It is delicious.
