Are there any DPN supplements that can help lift the moods/fight temporary depression--specifically for Type O's?
I tried Catechol but it seems to only help when I feel stressed or hyped up, not when I feel depressed. |

How's your excercise? One of the practitioner's on the 2003 IFHI CD's recalled her O client bringing himself out of depression by excercise alone. He was widowed and began walking. Didn't change his diet. I think it was a few miles a day and then he found a club and walked 5-6 miles each weekend. |

Per your other thread, I would encourage you to support your adrenals and biological clock as best as you can and also consider if this is related to a situational issue and address the emotions. Sometimes I can get burnt out if something hasn't worked the way I thought it would. It usually points me to pausing and regrouping before I look at other strategies. There is always hope. |

I've found that compliance helps better than any supplement. Specifically, eating enough red meat helps my mood a LOT. |

ruthie, I think wholefoodie mentioned that as well. My O husband doesn't really seem to get down anymore after adding the meat and cutting the gluten. |

I went over on my reccomended servings of beef for a few days when I was really depressed. Those extra burgers were my "anti-depression supplement." Then I went back to normal portions after I was feeling better.
I also added rhodiola to my daily supplement regime, and I plan to keep it there indefinitely.
I'm also using Bach Flower Remedies to help me cope with the underlying emotional issues that lead to depression. At this point I own almost all of them, and my "treatment bottle" (that I refresh every 3-4 weeks, sometimes changing the remedy choices at thata time) contains anywhere from 2-5 different remedies, depending on how I'm feeling at the time I make a new bottle. |

Thanks all for your suggestions. Red meat--that's a good reminder! I do eat it 3-4 times a week but just these two days I've been eating chicken. Tomorrow I'll go back to beef AKArtlover--you're right about exercise. I may not be doing enough on some days. I do walk about 1-2km a day, and take ballet lessons three times a day. Ballet class is a challenge for me though, sometimes maybe too much because of its high demands for both flexibility and endurance, even though it's not considered a cardiovascular exercise. I sometimes get really frustrated and bumped out because I can't do certain movements or steps or lack endurance to finish the exercises. Perhaps not a good way to "boost my mood"! But when everything goes well, my mood is majorly lifted. It's a bit like an emotional roller coaster. Perhaps I'm too attached to the "outcome" and should be more relaxed about it. Last night I called DPN to ask a few questions about the supps. The customer service rep was very helpful. Regarding mood regulation, she suggested exercise as well, and also Catechol for my type. She said it is OK to take it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I took one before bed last night and it really helped me sleep better. I realized I had too much stress accumulated in my body and Catechol helps a great deal. I took it again this morning and was able to stay calm and feel less hyped up. I also turned to Louise Hay's tape on affirmations. I just love how she makes me feel instantly better! |

The red meat is really important How is your fatty fish intake as well ? My daughter eats no fish and she went down with depression. I gave her lots of fish oil( several grams pr day) ( I know that NOT neccersary great for O´s BUT she really needed the omega 3 and when she had no fish that was her option. I made sure she had plenty of zink and iron( from meat) And supplementet her with a mega B complex as well. She got so much better in very short while. When her mood starts acting up I up her fish oil again. I think it was peppermint twist wwho used salmon as mental first aid Hoep you feel better soon |

Yes, I take Dr D's Fish Oil supp as well as eat fatty fish every day for lunch. I love it! I can't believe I went almost without fish for more than a whole decade in my 20's and 30's.... no wonder I came down with a clinical depression (well, plus I was big on wheat, dairy, sugar and coffee--all the avoids for an O!)
Good suggestion for the Vitamin B... and the other ones. Let me check them out. Thanks!!! |

Hi Balletomane,
Yes, without meat I was depressed! Amazing how it was all about the beef. Once I added that to my diet, I never again experienced brain fog and lack of motivation like I had before BTD. I also have been taking catechol for about 2 years. Not one I will probably give up anytime soon.
A funny side story: When I was about 18 years old I suffered from panic attacks, before they even had a name. I announced at the dinner table to my family that I thought I was having a breakdown. Not understanding the seriousness of it, my father said "eat your meat." But dad, I hate meat! Little did I know that decades later it would be my lifeline. I knew my father was wise but I missed the boat on that one!

Wow, Lisa, your dad was right on? Is he an O? A Hunter? Seems like he has good instincts! Glad to hear you also benefit from Catechol. I'm taking it twice a day now when my mood tends to swing. Some days I just feel "Oh so sensitive!" I try to console myself, though, that being so emotionally sensitive is a gift. It helps me understand other sensitive beings too . |

Paula, I eat what's labeled "organic"... I supposed organic means grass fed??? It is not so easy to find grass-fed beef here. But if it's available, it is actually cheaper than "organic." Fish Oil is great, isn't it? I like the fact that Dr D's fish oil capsules don't smell or taste fishy at all |

Folic acid and methyl B12 will destroy depression.
Add exercise for your body's own "adaptogenic" balance. |

Well In EU all organic animals need to be on grass- but I am not so sure about US.... that is whay it is important that you get grass fed/patured animals. |

In the U.S., "organic" cattle are fed organic grains, sometimes supplemented with *some* pasture, but not always. "Grass-fed" cattle are fed NO grains at all, which is why the Omega 3's are so high. Grain feeding makes the meat high in Omega 6. |

Oh, I see. The beef I buy comes from Australia... Any Aussies here who know what "organic" mean when it comes to cattle? When I asked the store, they told me organic means grass fed too... but I can't really trust them |

"Organic" beef can be fed organic corn rather than being pastured. I think I read somewhere that most cattle in the USA are fed grass most of their lives, but they're often "fattened up" with grains in the weeks before slaughter. Needless to say, that "fattening up" leads to less-healthy fat in the final product.
I have yet to find a source for kosher grass-fed beef, or even kosher organic beef. I've been eating the conventional stuff. I still notice a huge difference in moods when I eat enough beef vs not eating beef.
If money is tight, and you have a choice between the best-quality beef, or a larger quantity of cheap beef, you may be better off buying "enough" red meat rather than going only for quality. |

Grass fed and finished, please. It's a tricky label because all cows eat grass. It's best if you can ask the farmer or find out more specifics. Grass finished means it wasn't fed corn, etc. at the end of it's life. I don't believe there is any regulation on this label.

He was an "O", most likely a gatherer. He died in his early 50's of a brain tumor and at that time, I was cooking for my parents and bringing food while they were traveling for treatment. Sadly, I the food I prepared was not in line with the "O" diet, but who knew? I remember making spinach stuffed lasagna rolls and other seemingly healthy dinners. He was about my age when he was diagnosed but I feel like I am at the top of my game healthwise. One thing I did observe, stress kills. The family was going through an extremely stressful situation and most of it fell on his shoulders. Keep taking that catechol! |

Vitamin D got me out of a slump this week. Was getting 30+ minutes of direct, mid-day sunshine every day for 2 weeks, and didn't seem to be making any calciferol. Started taking my D3 pills again, and felt instantly transformed. Just my 2 pence. |

Are there any DPN supplements that can help lift the moods/fight temporary depression--specifically for Type O's?
I being O- like the pure chocolate powder or the medicinal quality in anti depression in dark chocolate.. Much safer then pills or sups, and tastes better to.. there are choc that are much less caloric then sweet mich choc.. so look for it and enjoy!! on days when you need more then eat more.. on others just a half tea spoon in hot water is enough.. or shaving it over other foods.. or pudding with rice milk? |

Eric, thanks for the reminder. I do get lots of sun every day. On days when it's cloudy, I'd take Phyto-D. Goldie, I have to admit I like your suggestion the best, coz I'm a chocoholic For a short while I doubted if my daily dark choco intake would be detrimental to my fibroid growth. But when I chatted with DPN customer rep the other day, she told me it would not give me negative effects as long as I follow the quantity allowed in my SWAMI. I have, however, cut down a little on it just to be on the safe side. But what makes me happy is that I can continue to eat it without guilty feelings |

When it's too hot to have cocoa powder in hot water, dissolve it in a small amount of hot water, then add ice cubes and seltzer. Chocolate soda!! You can have it unsweetened, or mix in agave, molasses (super yum!) or stevia before adding the ice. |

Balletomane, This is not a supplement or food suggestion regarding your feeling depression but something you may want to consider. I've suggested this site numerous times but I'll do it again because it has so much practical information about our states of being and what ails us. It is: http://www.AnandaApothecary.com. Their essential oils are therapeutic grade. Isa has suggested a mix of two oils for the dermatitis on my leg and I just reordered the one oil. She mentioned the fact that we should not under estimate the power of essential oils on our olfactory nerves. If you put depression in the search box in the upper left hand corner of the site there are a number of paragraphs. Some suggestions for oils are : Bergamot, Neroli, Chamomiles (german and roman) Depressive states often have to be addressed on more than one level. Joy |

Intersting reading..
Quoted Text
Although vitamin D is firmly enshrined as one of the four fat-soluble vitamins, it is not technically a vitamin. True, it’s essential for health, and only minuscule amounts are required. But it breaks the other rules for vitamins because it’s produced in the human body, it’s absent from all natural foods except fish and egg yolks, and even when it’s obtained from foods, it must be transformed by the body before it can do any good.
so eating the eggs is good once again?? I used to eat 1 egg every day, have not done so for a while, but I will now do so again.. thanks.. |

Thanks, Joy, for the suggestion. I have not thought about essential oils for depression. Will look into that area. Goldie, I didn't know that you could get Vitamin D from eggs (maybe that's why my husband intuitively craves for raw eggs from time to time). I just know that they are good for us Type O's They are so satisfying. You'd get a super food when you make a plane omelet with ghee and Brewer's Yeast . Recently I listened to a Louise Hay lecture about change. There was an audience member who asked her for advice regarding her worsening lab results despite the fact that she had been feeling great healthwise through positive affirmations. Guess what Louise said? She said, let the doctors have the numbers! As for you, how do you feel? The person said "I feel great!" Well, said Louise, do not let the numbers drive how you feel. They are just numbers and serve no purposes if you actually feel great! Keep on feeling great! And that's exactly the message I needed to hear coz I am in the same situation! Instantly I feel much better |

Time to resuscitate this thread as I'm in search of more ways to help with my depression. For the third day in a row I have been feeling depressed, got mood swings and have had angry outbursts. This time it is triggered by my painful rib, which I suspect has sustained a hairline fracture. It hurts a lot sometimes but what is worse is that I cannot do any rigorous exercise.... even hurt when I walk fast. This alone makes me super depressed.
I have heard that high doses of Niacin (Vit B3) helps lift depression. But apart from the small amount in Polyvite, how else can I get this vitamin? Any idea? |

Thanks Isa... so many choices, eh? I guess I'd better not try DLPA... you make me wonder if I do have bi-polar... I just had a really serious mood swing today!!! I don't know if it has to do with pre-menopause??? I seem to have more and more frequent mood swings lately. L'theanine, L'acetyl L'carnitine -- are any of these available in the NAP supps, coz I mostly take NAP supps. I am still curious about Niacin... anybody has tried it in high doses? Anyway, perhaps what I need is some psychological counseling. |

This alone makes me super depressed.
balletomane how did you break your rib?? which side is it on? the right side could be a gallbladder attack.. did you eat chocolate? a half bar 85% chocolate a day? and drink hot water with cocoa pure powder ... anytime.. I am sick of all the sups.. sick of all the extras.. I want foods that cure.. choc does.. and eat NOTHING white! |
| When I see other peoples medicines schedule-I am happy to be here taking care of my health I only wish to drop weight more easily-life would be perfection Being 'here' creates understanding. BTD prevents damage from eating avoids. Thanks Dr D & your sups - all support and friendships |

Are you exercising? Exercise will raise dopamine levels. I think this is a body issue, not a mind issue. (Did not read the whole thread, so forgive me in advance.) |

the best and cheapest and fastest way to know what is going on up or down stairs is by going to 90 AA meetings in 90 days.. just listen.. listen to and from and listen again when you think about the words.. others can help but it takes years .. AA does much of it in a much shorter time.. ACOA books/meetings are valuable.. even for me who never drank.. nor anyone in my family .. BUT then I am in favor of reaching out to anyone .. even RISE.. all offer some piece to the puzzle.. I PMd you |

Just the other day I posted a video called "Food Matters" (in little fishes forum) and in this video there is this doctor who tells about a woman with heavy depression (the stare at wall, do nothing kind of depression) and he suggests to her family to give her Niacin. They did and within days she was sitting back at the table talking to everyone just like her old self again... until one of her doctors suggested that perhaps Niacin is not too good for her health. Now she's back at staring at walls, not talking and heavy depression medication. I say, go for the Niacin. Here is a link to a flush free kind: http://www.google.com/products.....amp;ved=0CC0Q8gIwAw# |

Thanks all for your suggestion. Isa, I went to the homeopathic dispensary yesterday but the only supp they have that contains l'theanine is a natural sleeping pill! Well, that's not what I need. However, i realized that the amino acid is naturally available in green tea... what a good reminder to drink more of green tea, which I love! Mark, I cannot do much exercise due to my painful rib, which creates a vicious cycle of depression. And Goldie, thanks so much for reaching out and sending me a PM. I'm going to look into your suggestion As for now, I'm glad to say that the "Black Dog" seems to be retreating. Sandra, I did not see your post on "Food Matters" but I saw the link to that video by Andrea on FB, and watched it. That's how I got the idea of niacin! Thanks so much for the link to the flush-free product. I had no idea what flush-free meant!!! It might be something good to stock up on just in case the Black Dog comes back... it seems to pay me visits more often nowadays I think sleep deprivation has a lot to do with my nervy state. I have been extremely sleep deprived, having to work till very late at night. Last night I worked through the night, with only a one-hour nap in between. Luckily I was able to get some 4 hours' sleep in the morning. |

It's a destressor as far as I know... apparently they've used it together with valerian and other herbs to make a sleeping pill |

I didn't read all of the above posts, so I don't know if this has been suggested, but I have been on DHEA for some time, and I have not been depressed. Of course I have seldom been depressed for any length of time in my life, so maybe I am not a good judge, or if DHEA has really been effective. I got the idea from Dr.Whitaker, I have read his 'Health and Healing' news letter since '96, and found ER4YT in '98. When both he and Dr. D'Adamo agree, I know it has to be right. But I don't know if Dr. D would agree with the use of DHEA, so I cannot take it for gospel.
For what it's worth, Al Ge |
