Are there any DPN supplements that can help lift the moods/fight temporary depression--specifically for Type O's?
I tried Catechol but it seems to only help when I feel stressed or hyped up, not when I feel depressed. |

How's your excercise? One of the practitioner's on the 2003 IFHI CD's recalled her O client bringing himself out of depression by excercise alone. He was widowed and began walking. Didn't change his diet. I think it was a few miles a day and then he found a club and walked 5-6 miles each weekend. |

Per your other thread, I would encourage you to support your adrenals and biological clock as best as you can and also consider if this is related to a situational issue and address the emotions. Sometimes I can get burnt out if something hasn't worked the way I thought it would. It usually points me to pausing and regrouping before I look at other strategies. There is always hope. |

I've found that compliance helps better than any supplement. Specifically, eating enough red meat helps my mood a LOT. |

ruthie, I think wholefoodie mentioned that as well. My O husband doesn't really seem to get down anymore after adding the meat and cutting the gluten. |

I went over on my reccomended servings of beef for a few days when I was really depressed. Those extra burgers were my "anti-depression supplement." Then I went back to normal portions after I was feeling better.
I also added rhodiola to my daily supplement regime, and I plan to keep it there indefinitely.
I'm also using Bach Flower Remedies to help me cope with the underlying emotional issues that lead to depression. At this point I own almost all of them, and my "treatment bottle" (that I refresh every 3-4 weeks, sometimes changing the remedy choices at thata time) contains anywhere from 2-5 different remedies, depending on how I'm feeling at the time I make a new bottle. |

Thanks all for your suggestions. Red meat--that's a good reminder! I do eat it 3-4 times a week but just these two days I've been eating chicken. Tomorrow I'll go back to beef AKArtlover--you're right about exercise. I may not be doing enough on some days. I do walk about 1-2km a day, and take ballet lessons three times a day. Ballet class is a challenge for me though, sometimes maybe too much because of its high demands for both flexibility and endurance, even though it's not considered a cardiovascular exercise. I sometimes get really frustrated and bumped out because I can't do certain movements or steps or lack endurance to finish the exercises. Perhaps not a good way to "boost my mood"! But when everything goes well, my mood is majorly lifted. It's a bit like an emotional roller coaster. Perhaps I'm too attached to the "outcome" and should be more relaxed about it. Last night I called DPN to ask a few questions about the supps. The customer service rep was very helpful. Regarding mood regulation, she suggested exercise as well, and also Catechol for my type. She said it is OK to take it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I took one before bed last night and it really helped me sleep better. I realized I had too much stress accumulated in my body and Catechol helps a great deal. I took it again this morning and was able to stay calm and feel less hyped up. I also turned to Louise Hay's tape on affirmations. I just love how she makes me feel instantly better! |

The red meat is really important How is your fatty fish intake as well ? My daughter eats no fish and she went down with depression. I gave her lots of fish oil( several grams pr day) ( I know that NOT neccersary great for O´s BUT she really needed the omega 3 and when she had no fish that was her option. I made sure she had plenty of zink and iron( from meat) And supplementet her with a mega B complex as well. She got so much better in very short while. When her mood starts acting up I up her fish oil again. I think it was peppermint twist wwho used salmon as mental first aid Hoep you feel better soon |

Yes, I take Dr D's Fish Oil supp as well as eat fatty fish every day for lunch. I love it! I can't believe I went almost without fish for more than a whole decade in my 20's and 30's.... no wonder I came down with a clinical depression (well, plus I was big on wheat, dairy, sugar and coffee--all the avoids for an O!)
Good suggestion for the Vitamin B... and the other ones. Let me check them out. Thanks!!! |

Hi Balletomane,
Yes, without meat I was depressed! Amazing how it was all about the beef. Once I added that to my diet, I never again experienced brain fog and lack of motivation like I had before BTD. I also have been taking catechol for about 2 years. Not one I will probably give up anytime soon.
A funny side story: When I was about 18 years old I suffered from panic attacks, before they even had a name. I announced at the dinner table to my family that I thought I was having a breakdown. Not understanding the seriousness of it, my father said "eat your meat." But dad, I hate meat! Little did I know that decades later it would be my lifeline. I knew my father was wise but I missed the boat on that one!

Wow, Lisa, your dad was right on? Is he an O? A Hunter? Seems like he has good instincts! Glad to hear you also benefit from Catechol. I'm taking it twice a day now when my mood tends to swing. Some days I just feel "Oh so sensitive!" I try to console myself, though, that being so emotionally sensitive is a gift. It helps me understand other sensitive beings too . |

Paula, I eat what's labeled "organic"... I supposed organic means grass fed??? It is not so easy to find grass-fed beef here. But if it's available, it is actually cheaper than "organic." Fish Oil is great, isn't it? I like the fact that Dr D's fish oil capsules don't smell or taste fishy at all |

Folic acid and methyl B12 will destroy depression.
Add exercise for your body's own "adaptogenic" balance. |

Well In EU all organic animals need to be on grass- but I am not so sure about US.... that is whay it is important that you get grass fed/patured animals. |

In the U.S., "organic" cattle are fed organic grains, sometimes supplemented with *some* pasture, but not always. "Grass-fed" cattle are fed NO grains at all, which is why the Omega 3's are so high. Grain feeding makes the meat high in Omega 6. |

Oh, I see. The beef I buy comes from Australia... Any Aussies here who know what "organic" mean when it comes to cattle? When I asked the store, they told me organic means grass fed too... but I can't really trust them |

"Organic" beef can be fed organic corn rather than being pastured. I think I read somewhere that most cattle in the USA are fed grass most of their lives, but they're often "fattened up" with grains in the weeks before slaughter. Needless to say, that "fattening up" leads to less-healthy fat in the final product.
I have yet to find a source for kosher grass-fed beef, or even kosher organic beef. I've been eating the conventional stuff. I still notice a huge difference in moods when I eat enough beef vs not eating beef.
If money is tight, and you have a choice between the best-quality beef, or a larger quantity of cheap beef, you may be better off buying "enough" red meat rather than going only for quality. |

Grass fed and finished, please. It's a tricky label because all cows eat grass. It's best if you can ask the farmer or find out more specifics. Grass finished means it wasn't fed corn, etc. at the end of it's life. I don't believe there is any regulation on this label.

He was an "O", most likely a gatherer. He died in his early 50's of a brain tumor and at that time, I was cooking for my parents and bringing food while they were traveling for treatment. Sadly, I the food I prepared was not in line with the "O" diet, but who knew? I remember making spinach stuffed lasagna rolls and other seemingly healthy dinners. He was about my age when he was diagnosed but I feel like I am at the top of my game healthwise. One thing I did observe, stress kills. The family was going through an extremely stressful situation and most of it fell on his shoulders. Keep taking that catechol! |

Vitamin D got me out of a slump this week. Was getting 30+ minutes of direct, mid-day sunshine every day for 2 weeks, and didn't seem to be making any calciferol. Started taking my D3 pills again, and felt instantly transformed. Just my 2 pence. |
