Has anyone ever heard of the iodine test, where you put the orange liquid iodine on your skin and wait to see what happens to it 12 to 24 hrs later?    If you're not deficient in iodine, it should remain the same color, and vice versa.  Well, I tried it last night... I stained a big patch of iodine on each of my wrists, woke up in the morning about 7 or 8 hours later, and the patches were COMPLETELY GONE... I could barely see traces of where the iodine was, and I'm kind of scared.. I take bladderwrack often, and I assumed I had enough iodine.  Dr. D says not to supplement with it, so I don't know what to do

I did the iodine test too awhile ago and it went away too quickly also.  Now that I munch on my Lavor Nori seaweed whenever my energy gets low it has kept my iodine levels up.

I did that several years ago and by morning the iodine would always be gone.  I did it every night for several weeks and it never improved--always gone by a.m.--so I just gave up.  Maybe I'll try it again just for fun.

I use it inside my wrists in the day time if I'm going to be home all day. If I happen to think about doing it at night, I put it on my thigh. Doesn't make any difference for me, anyway.

If I could use it in a supplement, I wouldn't be bothering about painting it anywhere unless I just wanted to check once in a while to see if I was getting enough. My allergy to it is why I am afraid to take Dr. D.'s GTD multi.

I want to try the GTD multi. It looks pretty good. He did put citrus bio flavanoids in it but sometimes it doesn't bother me..

I second Italybound!

I think there may be a specific reason to do the test on the inner thigh rather than the wrists?.  I also remember reading somewhere that the test should be done on the thigh.  I would say more researched is needed or maybe someone will chime in with the answer?.

A search on the old message boards archives may answer the question.

I am new here but found this to be very interesting. One of my doctors gave me an iodine supplement because I was telling him of my health problems. He also gave me a tape regarding the research that has been done on iodine deficiency. It was mind blowing to say the least. It was as if they were talking about me! The solution he gave me was saline solution mixed with iodine. You are to put 3 drops in your coffee or other liquid everyday. Now can I still do this??

sure.....your Dr prescribed it, right?

when you finish that prescription, you can try the patch method, and compare.

We sell these food grade iodine drops at the HFS I work at, and it says to mix 1 drop with water every day, and i provides the RDA (somewhere around 150mcg) of iodine a day.  Sounds safe to me?

http://thyroid.about.com/library/derry/bl2a.htm

This character, like many old men I've known, proceeded to blow the "test" theory out of the water in his opening salvo, but goes on to write some really interesting things about the mind-blowing benefits of applying iodine to the skin. Even to reducing swelling in the thyroid! And getting rid of cancerous conditions. He writes:

So even small amounts of iodine absorbed through the skin can have good effects on body organs. From my own clinical experience, repeated application of iodine (Lugols) to the skin appears to cause regeneration of the skin from the bottom up (Quiescent, stable or stem cell) (3) eventually sloughing the old version of the skin off like a snake molting. If there was a pre-cancerous lesion on the old skin, it is replaced with new skin minus the lesion. There does not seem to be any skin lesions which are not helped or cured by this procedure. In some cases I found clinically obvious low thyroid conditions also needed to be treated to be more effective. Minor lacerations and healing of surgical wounds respond well. If skin regeneration is from the bottom, then there is little or no scar formation.

My parents generation tended to put tincture of iodine onto a fresh wound to prevent infection. This turns out to be helpful but not the best way to use it. Besides it stung badly when applied. It is much more effective (and doesn't hurt) to apply iodine repeatedly after a scab has been formed. The iodine put onto the scab helps to organize total repair of the tissue. It is implied a similar approach could be taken to burns of all depths but at the same time the physiology of burns suggest there is an acute lack of thyroid hormone. (3)

What do you use to do this test, and how big of an area do you "paint"?

Spring, that is a very intersting excerpt from the article.   I'll read it all when I get more time. If I'm reading that right, I wonder that it would work to get rid of skin cancers.

drive55, I believe I've read a quarter size spot.

Thank you. It was my chiro. that gave it to me and he told me it was top secret research that hadn't yet been published. So there isn't a website that I know of sorry. I will ask him about it the next time I see him.

It wasn't a tradition script. It was my chiro. and he is into natural healing and helping those in need. When he first gave it to me it was because I was having horrible cold sweats at night. It worked.

Oh!  We need to check at 6 hours then?

Quote:  "If there is no iodine deficiency the full color of the tincture will last at least 6 hours."

So putting it on before bed at night and then checking in the morning isn't a good test, according to this.

It's too bad there's not more doctors like him.
