Hello everyone, I'm new to the site. Just started with Live Right for Your Type.  I've been on Prozac for several years, as it was the only thing that really helped me quit smoking.  Having read a little bit about in online, I'm concerned about adding 5HTP while taking it.  Anyone out there with similar experiences?

thanks!

hello there
and a very warm welcome on the boards
ahem....isn't it written also on the Prozac little bypackpaper, no aminoacids or similar for a mixup with that stuff It is written in most of the other SSRI's and sorry I wouldn't....not only because of the mixup between chemical and plants, but merely because  Dr. D' wrote that 5HTP is nothing for O's.....
so better not ....sorry ....

Hi kcrobins and also welcome to btd!

I was just wondering if you had or could discuss with your doctor about the possiblity of coming off the Prozac...very gradually of course, that's if you desire to do that of course??
Anyway, well done for quitting smoking.
Best wishes.

thanks for the welcome!  Now, I just finished reading Live Right...and 5HTP is in the suggested supplements.....when did that change?  And why?

As for coming off the Prozac...tried once, not good.  However, maybe being on the O diet will change that, but I'm not willing to take that chance just yet.....

how did you reacted when trying to come off that stuff? Did you became angry, fluffy, or headaches What has happened when you tried it ?? There's an upcoming group of ND's helping to go of those things, hmm will have an eye to find for you that address ... seems that they are very good in their work ....

use some unsweetened
cocoa powder in hot water or smoothie.
cocoa contains small amounts of
serotonin.

how about glutamine?

Thanks for the suggestion Lola, I do have some glutamine on the way.  I just wanted to know about the interactions with Prozac on the 5HTP.

I have to be careful with cocoa...until I get more balanced I react very, very easily to caffeine

thanks, Karen

Griffonia species have about 4-5 different
lectins, and the most common commercial
source of 5-HTP are  Griffonia seeds. Like
everything else in this world, your mileage
may vary: some people may be able to use it
with impunity, others (such as those who are
more digestively or immunologically sensitive)
would probably do better avoiding it.

Clinically, I've pretty much stopped using it,
more for what appears to be a lack of
efficacy rather than anything else, however
the Internet has a bigger pool of participants
so it would not at all be unlikely that some
folks would find it helpful.
expressed concern about 5-HTP use with both
type O and B in the Cardiovascular Disease
book stating that the source material has a
reactive lectin.
