I no longer recall who asked the question or what the thread was, but here is the answer. In re Dandelion's effect in promoting liver health, the answer is in flavonoids found in the root: The flavonoids in milk thistle (silymarin) and in dandelion root (taraxacum) protect the liver against reactive oxygen species[145]. The reference in question {145} is: 145. Cody, V., et al., ed. Plant Flavonoids in Biology and Medicine II. Biochemical, Cellular and Medicinal Properties. Progress in Clinical and Biological Research, Vol. 280. 1988, Aland R. liss, Inc.: New York. 481. The article from which this reference was pulled concerns leaky gut syndrome and was provided in another thread some time past by a now forgotten poster. (MoDon is a suspect.) http://www.mdheal.org/leakygut.htmSo the presumed answer to the question is, it is the root that provides the benefit to the liver. |

I frequently like to add raw dandelion leaves to my salads; they add a nice contrasting flavor and I know that they are very medicinal for the liver.

The root moreso than the leaves, as explained in the original post. That's why the root tea is so beneficial. Probably should be given a break from time to time, like other supplements in it's class (milk thistle). My guess would be the greens alone need no break, just a supposition. |

That is correct. I enjoy eating organic dandelion greens because they are a whole foods source; I favor eating fresh dandelion leaves daily to assist with healthy liver function than taking supplements.
However, I do take NAP's Taxacurum periodically.

Hi everybody, I also bought: Traditional Medicinals Organic Roasted Dandelion Root Traditionally Used As a Digestive Aid (and to increase bile flow) 100% Organic Caffeine Free Herbal Tea It says to steep for 15 minutes ... This sounds like a VERY long time !! furthermore; I see that people r using it as a daily tea but on my box it says that it may be used up to "two weeks" !! hence; beware people 'cause there must be a reason for this IMHO. I wonder if I can drink this tea before going to bed ?? I'll wait till somebody guides me before just incase it may NOT be a good idea since I've never tried it before Thank-u |

Dandelion tea (or dandelion coffee, as roasted roots are sometimes called) is often used as a coffee substitute. It is delicious. Very cleansing and supportive to the liver. YOu can add some of the finely ground roasted roots to regular coffee if you're allowed to have it . I don't know about limiting your use of the tea. I would suspect though that if you are needing a liver cleanse, you should take it in increments. Cathy Wilson helpertouch |

I had no idea ... that's quite interesting !! Thank-u for the info ... actually I haven't had a latte in almost 6 weeks !!! and although I miss it so much, I truly hope that I won't go back to it ... at least NOT on a daily basis but rather a once in a while treat

Indeed, I've read so many positive benfeits from it hence I've decided to buy a box and see what happens ... it just dawned on me that maybe I should wait to see my naturopath before though, since I'm NOT sure if I should use it 'cause I still have burping problems It sounds strange though to add dandelion to coffee since coffee is acidic and NOT cleansing to the liver ... hmmmm ... I appreciate ur input and I thank-u |

And once the Liver is back in check...There is the wonderful wine made from Dandelion blossoms.
Which brings to mind - eat the flowers...
Or cook the leaves in several changes of water to remove some of the bitterness.
And overwinter a strawbale over a weedy patch, and harvest 'blanched Chicory' from the leaves in Spring. |

This is probably because dandelion is known as a liver cleanser/detoxifier. It is nice to take a break from medicinal herbs so they do not lose their effectiveness if taken for a protocol or for a specific health reason. Alia |

Lisalea - Thanks for the brand recommendation. That's a good one. Roasted Dandelion Root. I love the variety here on the boards! |

This is the brand that I use also. I have really come to love this beverage. I let my tea bags steep at least 15 minutes and sometimes I don't even remove the tea bag. This is not the same thing as green tea which should be steeped a very short time to prevent bitterness. A root like this needs boiling hot water and plenty of soak time to allow all the beneficial properties to come out into the water. I think dandelion root would be good for excessive burping because it is such a good digestive aid. Only if you have a blockage in your gall ducts would you need to be concerned, in my opinion. Otherwise, it may even improve that condition. I always have much larger bowel movements when I am drinking it. I usually stop after a few days and take a little break. I don't time it, just play it by ear! Oh, and it's a very good nighttime beverage! |
