Most people today get more than enough calcium in their diets, but are deficient in magnesium.  When the calcium/magnesium balance is thrown off, it can cause health problems. Extra magnesium helps your body to use the calcium already in your diet.

Even the cal/mag supplements are usually not very good. They still have too much calcium for the amount of magnesium, and the magnesium is usually magnesium oxide, which is very poorly absorbed. It's a good laxative, but it's not great at providing your body with usable minerals.

You're much better off getting your minerals from whole foods, such as greens, bone broths, and fish (if the bones are eaten.) If you want to supplement, a whole-food source such as Dr D's seaweed based calcium is a good choice. The whole foods contain not just calcium but a range of minerals in a natural balance.

Hey Ruthiegirl.. I spoke of this on another thread but the Pytocal hurts my joints and I've noticed that other Calcium supp's have done the same.  so someone suggested Horsetail.  Also I take 3 of these magnesium citrate at night - http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods.....amp;sr=null&ic=3

I don't know if I need calcium but I see articles telling me I do based on being in menopause, etc.  So I started to look into it.

What would be the symptoms of too little magnesium and/or not enough calcium?

thanks in advance!

that was excellent and QUICK!  thank you for this article.  Based on the list of symptoms of deficient, I think I'm ok with what I'm taking and eating!

But still wonder about calcium.  so I may invest in the Horsetail Supp...

ruthiegirl,
I've read in several places same as you say about calcium/magnesium balance being off in most products.  Articles I've read say most of us need equal amounts of both or more magnesium.
