I'm an A secretor, and gelatin is also an avoid for me. I rarely consume anything that has gelatin in it, including (much to my sadness) Altoids. Gelatin is in a lot of foods/candies and supps so it always pays to read those labels.
BTW, welcome to the forum. |

I've never thought about this. I guess I take so few of them. But I also MAKE supplements, using gelatin capsules. I don't seem to have options, in many cases. |

V-caps can be found in bulk in most HFS; WF for sure. Do you use gelatin caps because they are easier for you to find? |

Gelatin as a food ingredient is generally rendered from animals, especially beef processing. Most Gelatin Capsules, as from herbal supplements in particular, will be Veggie Gelatin. You'd have to compare Beef and Gelatin for your BT to make a reasonable guess.... |

Hey all, I just thought I'd open up a discussion on gelatin capsules and softgels and see what some opinions around here were. As a type A, gelatin is an avoid for me, but I have a few supplements that contain it that I can't seem to get myself off of (Some by New Chapter for example - Mmmm Zyflamend). I'm currently dealing with Ulcerative colitis (its getting better) so I have to be pretty darn compliant. What about the rest of you? Do you guys worry that much about it? |

I don't eat anything with gelatin in it, including supplements. If I can't find a replacement for the gelatin capped supp, then I won't take it. But that's just me. |

was only thinking out loud, since NC was involved with the first ERFYT supplements.
for sure NAP uses the vegetable based ones. |

Hey Lola, New Chapter does have some products with Veggiecaps, but most of thier herbal 'supercritical' extracts some in liquid softgels. (Though rumor has it there's a veggiecap version of Zyflamend in the works) Thanks italybound! Its great to be here! And Lara, you open capsules in your mouth? Thats got to be pretty gross depending on what it is... I admire your resolve. Knowing that most of the gelatin comes from porcine sources should make it even easier for me to eliminate it all together, but I've still got some bottles I feel I should finish first. Perhaps I can just open them up and dump them into my morning smoothie - that sounds feasible. Not tasty, but feasible. |

Currently, I purchase NAP suplements and I only use veggie capsules.
If given a preference, I will favor a powder supplement over a veggie capsule as I usually twist open the capsule and pour the contents over my food or glass bowl/salad bowl.

Hi Laura, A naturopath told me that all oil capsules r bunk and probably that the oils in pills are rancid and often poisonous ... her exact words: don't trust them. |

I do much better when I don't ingest the capsules in supplements whether veggie or not. I open them up and put them in my smoothie or into a bottle of black cherry/POM juice diluted with water. Debra |
