I've had two attempts at taking Vit C with 'ascorbic acid' but both times it has triggered Candida. Does anyone know of a good company which stocks Vit C derived from rose hips and also contains Bioflovoniods and Rutin?? I'd be grateful for any ideas. |

Rose Hips are pure and compliant, but a pretty low dose of actual vitamin C. We need to locate a good source of non-ascorbic acid C for all blood types that has the potential for a hefty dose of C for those who like it. I take a wonderful product from acerola and rose hips, but it contains bell pepper, which is not good for all blood types. |

Make tea. This is sometimes called fruit tea. I also like to take the rose hips and eat them straight. They are a little crunchier in dried fruit so you can suck on them for a while while they absorb saliva and soften up. |

C-Sharp - where do you buy these??
I have gotten the rose hip in bulk at health food stores (generally with tea & herbs). Regular grocery stores sometimes contain tea bags with just rose hips or rose hips in mixtures (red zinger). Import stores will sometimes sell a 250 gram(about 8 ounces) bag of fruit tree from Germany or switzerland which is mostly rose hips. |

Hey there fellow BTDr's, we have got acres and acres and acres of these "rose hips" growing wild on our doorstep, how do I get them off the bushes and into your larders? there must be a little enterprise opportunity sitting here being absolutely ignored. They must be as near as dammit to being organic too. If I was able I could post a photo for you to see for yourselves. So what will I do with these things this summer, how do I process them into the product that everyone seems to need? John. |

First step is to select a rose variety with reasonably large hips (small hips are too much work to process) and a high concentration of ascorbic acid. Also it would be nice to have variety that does not require a lot of chemicals to control diseases and insects. I have not grown my own but my understanding is the favorite variety for hip production is Rosa rugosaRose hips ripen after they are touched by the first fall frost. The color of rose hips varies, but in general, orange hips are not quite ripe, and deep red hips are overripe. Overripe hips are sweet, but have lost much of their vitamin C. Notes on gathering and preparing the hips:
- Wait tell after frost to harvest. You want the red hips. Orange hips are not fully ripe. If you leave the hips on the plants too long you loose the vitamin C.
- Rose hips vitamin C concentration also diminishes with increased amount of time after harvest
- remove bloom stem
- cut the hip in half
- remove seeds and pith

The shell! I through the seeds and pith away. I have heard of people including these in jellies (using the whole fruit). I have seen a few seeds in commercial rose hips sold for tea. A few seeds included accidentally appears to not cause any real harm. |

Well, I've just searched a little on google/msn looking for a Rose hip/rutin/bioflavonoids combination....have found some...but how do I know they're a reliable source??
I just did a quick Google search for Rose Hips Vitamin C. I checked out the first 50 items, and all but one ended up being for vitamin C WITH Rose Hips. This means that the bulk of the capsule will most likely be ascorbic acid that is corn based, with some rose hips added. Even the buffered vitamin C products out there are corn based. There was one product that looks like it is all rose hips, but they don't provide an ingredient list that I could find, nor do they tell you how many mg of actual vit C the supplement provides. The 580 mg. that they list, looks like the quantity of rose hips in the capsule, not the amount of vit C. If I were going to consider buying a product like this, I would communicate with the seller, and ask a lot of questions. http://www.femhealth.com/RoseHips.htmlMy other concern with using rose hips, in the form of tea, or dried in bulk, is that the vit. C content quickly diminishes with time, especially if the product is exposed to light and/or air. I don't know how much of the good stuff you will actually be getting unless you eat them fresh, or harvest them yourself, shade dry and immediately put them into small glass jars in a dark space. |

Please let us know what you find out, Janet. Many people are, like you, looking for a good source of vitamin C that is not from corn, and is preferably Rose Hips based.
Anyone who can eat bell peppers, check out Complex C, by Mega Food. The vit c comes from rose hips and acerola. One tablet contains 250 mg of C, plus a good amount of bioflavanoids. |

The product sounds even better than MegaFood Complex C, which is the one I take. Complex C has orange peel and bell peppers which are avoids for some types.
The Pure Radiance C does have black pepper, which I'd like to find out a bit on how they process it. Also there are buckwheat sprouts. Sprouts are great, but if any are left unsprouted, some of us would be getting an avoid in the buckwheat, also maybe gluten. ??
I really like the idea of getting vitamin C from multiple sources, as in Camu Camu, Acerola Cherry, and Rose Hips, also with the addition of other fruits and vegetables for the balanced bioflavanoids. It's so hard to find an excellent product without any avoids in them. I wish NAP would make a good compliant Vitamin C/bioflavanoid product, and with a high enough dose. |

I did email NAP with my request for a good vitamin C product that is free from corn, and containing any or all of camu camu, acerola berry and rose hips. Meanwhile I have continued to search for a non-corn source, yet high potency, vit. C product with no avoids for any blood type. I like Camu, and was reading about it at THIS site . It is not tested yet, so I am treating it as a neutral. I emailed and asked about the potency of the Camu powder, and received this answer today. It's a very respectable amount: "Hello Victoria, About 20% on this batch. That is what the testing showed. So 1/4 teaspoon about 500mg of Camu (typical capsule full) would have 120 mg of pure C (200% of the RDA). Wishing you abundant health, Jeff Natural Zing 301-703-4116" |

Pure Radiance looks great! It says it is gluten free. I've had vitamin C from New Chapter with long pepper in it and it always caused me a bit of stomach trouble. Perhaps taking the supplement with in the right type of meal would help. Check out these food sources for Vitamin C: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=109 Let's say you start the day with fresh lemon juice in warm water (1/4 cup has 28 mg of vitamin C), then have 1 cup of steamed kale for lunch (53 mg), 1 cup of steamed broccoli at dinner (123 mg), Type A okay snack of 1/2 cup cantaloupe (33 mg), strawberries (40) or 1 whole kiwi fruit (57 mg), etc. Buckwheat is a good source of rutin for Type A's along with fennel bulb. So let's see....that's about 247 not including the parsley, romaine, avocado, pumpkin and other sources you ate during the day. Well above the daily recommended as listed here: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=109#pubrecs |

Certain varieties of Rosa were selected for higher Vitamin C. Dog Rose, Wild Briar {Rosa canina} is apparently the highest.
Rutin is a Biofavonoid from Buckwheat and Rhubarb {Rheum sp.} |

as rhubarb is an avoid for eveyone, would it be such a good idea to be consuming a Vit C containing same? Are buckwheat and rhubarb the only 2 sources of rutin bioflavonoid? |

For a simple vitamin C product, we may need to go with single ingredient sources, like the Camu powder, linked in post #39. Also, a source for the Solid Rose Hips Extract, now called Hipex, is HERE. This site charges no shipping costs. I have emailed them to find out the full ingredient list in the extract. They have told me the potency is 160 mg per teaspoon. This is compared to the Camu powder (no other ingredients), which is 120 mg. per 1/4 tsp. |

...Are buckwheat and rhubarb the only 2 sources of rutin bioflavonoid?
There are other sources, but those were the first researched to have that constituent. There is nothing magical about 'Bioflavonoids' - there are thousands, but only a very few have been studied for nutritional merit. 'Flavonoids' are the tart/sour flavours of roots and barks... Better sources of Vitamin C for medicinal use would be:
- Australian Bushtucker fruit: Billygoat, or Kakadu plum, Murunga {Terminalia ferdinandiana - Combretaceae}
- CamuCamu, Cacari {Myrciaria dubia - Myrtaceae}
- the oft cited, on this forum, Wolfberry.

Buckwheat is related to rhubarb.
that being so, still rhubarb is an avoid for all and buckwheat is not. isn't this what we should be going by? |

The 'Pure Radiance C' arrived today, so have taken my first capsule... NP said the only problem for me might be with the added 'sweet berries' but to take them for 5-7 days and see how I feel....as I said I'd be the guinea pig...will keep you posted!! |

OK, 1st report on the Pure Radiance C.
I started off by taking: Day 1- 1 cap, Day 2- 2 caps, Day 3- 3 caps and so far have had no ill effects.
But my husband who has only taken 1 per day for the last 4 days has had problems. He says he feels constipated and as if he's eaten something like wheat...most uncomfortable. So I reckon he should stop taking it, I'm sure it must be the capsule because it's the only new thing he's taken - no food out of the ordinary. He's taken it in the morning and by early evening starts to feel better. I'm not really sure what is in it that he's sensitive to. |

What blood type is your husband, Janet?
If I remember right, my only concern with the product was the pepper. I don't know if they freshly grind it, or if it possibly is ground black pepper, which is an avoid for many (if not all) of us. |

Lola what about all thesse little hairs that are inside the rosehip? Don't they bother you? Do you drink it all times or only when you feel you need it? Thanks Ion |

I am glad you can find fresh rose hips!
down here it is impossible to find a source that is organic, etc.
the ones I use come from NY, organic and dried. soaking them during the night in water, helps reconstitute them and make a very fruity kind of drink, once you grind it all together. |

There is Synergy's Pure Radiance C 100% natural whole food vitamin C product too.
Just coming up to two weeks taking the Vit C...and have had no problems. Had a visit to the hospital on Monday for a histerscopia; told the Consultant that I'd taken some Vit C which contained ascorbic acid and it had triggered Candida. "Noooo", he told me emphatically...ascorbic acid wouldn't give you Candida. Well, I said to myself...that's all you know!! Do we not know our own bodies???? |

I have gotten the rose hip in bulk at health food stores (generally with tea & herbs).
Frontier Natural Foods Co-op sells rosehips as a powder, cut and sifted or whole, by the pound. Some items are listed as seedless in their catalog. Frontier sells retail or people can form a buying club to get products at wholesale, if they don't have a business. Website is http://www.frontiercoop.com. I don't know if they ship outside the U.S. |

You're most welcome. And thanks for YOUR welcome. : ) I joined the forum maybe 10 days ago and quickly gathered suggestions before going compliant last Saturday. Haven't posted since, while I went thru detox brain fog. Just looked at the Frontier print catalog again and noticed that each rosehips category (powder, C/S and whole) contains both a "natural" product and an organic one. And none has an indicator that it contains additional ingredients. |

wanted to post this before I went to bed and forgot to do it tomorrow. i was shocked when I saw this. CELERY is loaded w/ Vit C!! and a fair amount of folate. also low glycemic but watch out for pesticided and buy organic if possible. My main point was the Vit C tho. I know it's not from rose hip, but is this source good for all? |

still waiting for mine. very anxious to try it out. I ordered the powder as I thought I'd prob get more for the money and I like the sour taste, so will prob use it in some of my drinks . Does anyone know if there are any liquids/foods which the C powder should not be mixed?
