Slow metabolism is in my book.. food slowly moving from the stomach through to the end where it falls out being pushed.. ... I seldom experience it as food 'moving' along.

No food ever did that.  Not even stuff to help it along..

Then I also expect that slow metabolism is another way of saying, one would need less food to exist.

While Fast metabolism means the person has a active thyroid and is more high spirited..

Today I have slowwwwwwwww metabolism, while before i was 21 I could eat every thing and never gained any extra weight, in fact I was slimmm and trimmm.. So what is going wrong since then?????????????

What did I do?????? or what did my body do?????? to change from normal well functioning to slugggish? over night?  It happened that way when I was 21...
one year I was fine I got married in June and in November had gained way to many pounds all in my belly.. they thought I was pregnant, never to be... but the belly never left..

So what is this word? or, is it a noun or a verb?  what drives it?

hey all is explained in wiki ... but then the bt-aspects seems to play a role as well...all about b-sugars and their appearence in interactions with food... but what I've found out is...explorers were declared to be slow in their metabolisme... which isn't always true..coz I was detected as a so called superfast metabolzer and that means my body is able to get off poisons as fast as wanted ...

I'm interested in this because, like you Isa, I metabolize toxins, drugs, etc. very quickly, yet even with normal digestion my usable energy from good food seems lacking. I know immediately if something is a drag on my system, but the dynamism has sort of flattened out. (Maybe a good thing considering my mercurial nature?).

I used to think blood glucose was the culprit, but my sugar intake has been greatly reduced in the last few months, and although I'm not experiencing noticable fluctuations--it's stablized-- I feel no better in terms of increased energy. No general malaise, just laziness

I'm wondering if nutrient mal-absorbtion is the issue. I get plenty of B vitamins from NOW nutritional yeast, and a host of other supplements as well, though not the high quality NAP stuff like Polyvite (yet).

Any thoughts?

I wonder if we HERE.. could make a list of all places where Dr D has written on the subject.. I would search for it.. and then have a few of us do some reading and translating to our interest HERE.. ???  To do it alone is tiresome and three or 4 minds work better.. ???????

OK ... so some kind of discussion was held here.. but at the core I think I wish to find 'answers' to bathroom issues.  Ok I go to the bathroom but not ever have a empty colon.. (more like days in the digestive track,// is that changeable in some way?  Does that indicate slow metabolism??

If I ate Swiss Kressi.. stuff to 'go'.. would that mean its a faster metabolism..?

Am I being stupid here?  Do I not get the word, or the concept?

I mean my metabolism is so efficient even fresh air is kept to make me gain weight.  slow.. no it does not let anything go to waist, keeps it all in added pounds.. so is that Metabolism?

Metabolism refers to how fast you burn calories for fuel in the context of weight control. But it can also refer to how quickly or slowly you breakdown drugs and pharmaceuticals.

The quality of your digestion has to do with how fast food is broken down and eliminated from your body, but to an extent how good you are about metabolizing certain food stuffs.

If you're low on certain digestive enzymes, you might not metabolize certain macronutrients or vitamins as efficiently to make the distinction.

OK so going back to a suggestion way above.. taking /ingesting 2 spoons of cayenne might be the thing to do?

I have no way on figuring out how I would take it without chocking on it..

but there has to be a way to move things along without every minuscule nutrient being absorbed and held onto forever..

I would not care if I was under utilizing the food intake.. there has to be a way to eliminate what I ate 2 days ago instead of fife days later.. even going every day, if it is 5 day old foods, it is still not 'moving' things as far as I guess to be healthy..

IS the word slow misleading?

For instance: I drink two spoons of alcohol/wine and I feel it in my knees and my brain within 10 minutes or 8 minutes earlier.. that is not slow.. when I eat sweets my sugar is expected to spike fast.. taking a painkiller works within a hour, is that fast or slow? or my chin itching within 10 minutes when eating avoids?

OR is fast or slow measured by how fast I can overcome the itch on my chin, or fall asleep after ingesting sugary stuff, or how fast I feel more energized when drinking caffeine in any minor form???

what makes this slow or fast?  what does it matter?

Is it a matter of thyroid needing iodine?  Is it a matter of the liver processing foods, and how fast I can smell asparagus in my urine.. what does that mean.. what is fast...?   does any matter?  really?

Goldie,
Based on what I've read on transit time of stools there can be different reasons for it being slow.
Lack of exercise, lack of bulk food in diet; candida/yeast issues; Digestive Enzymes, gut health.
For a while, at  my acupuncturist suggestions i stopped all grains, eggs, dairy, sugar.  Mostly ate veggies and potatoes, and it felt like the transit speeded up.

I think I equate 'elimination' with metabolism... Might be a misconception.  Maybe I need to up Magnesium not only for muscle aches on the outer limbs, but for the muscles internally as well.  I wonder if taking some every day is counter productive, as then the body gets used to the 'extra' help, maybe taking it every two days might be a solution?  I wonder if Magnesium is affected by some other foods, thus in effect eliminate rather than balancing.. I need to read about that some more..
