Yeah,  but there's a difference between knowing and knowing.

Coconut oil, I'm jealous! With all the talk of how great it is for hair and skin I just bought some from vitacost (very good price) and the smell has been heavenly! I'm trying not to eat any, though.

Congratulations, Ruthie!  It really can make a difference, so I'm glad that you have got your diet more individualized.  I'd like to see your kids tested too, because I think it will make a difference in their health.  (Yes, I know, $$!   )

Beleive me, I would have loved to do 3 secretor tests rather than just one that day (DS was in camp and couldn't come with us to Andrea's house.) I may get DD1 tested for her 17th birthday in December. Or I may just stick her on the nonnie diet and see how she does.

I doubt DD2 is a non-secretor because of the dramatic difference in her health and mental outlook when she switched from wheat to spelt. I also think DS is a secretor because he reacts so badly to tomatoes, a food that would be OK for him if he was a nonnie.

How exactly do secretor genetics work? If my ex is a nonnie, would our kids automatically be nonnies as well? (Of course, that wouldn't help me determine DS' secretor status since he has a different bio dad.)

Since Non is recessive, and you are Non and passed a Non allele, the father would also have to pass a Non allele for the offspring to be Non.  If the father is Non, the child(ren) will automatically be Non.  If the father is Secretor, he may or may not have a Non-allele; if he does have a Non allele, then he may or may not have passed it to the child - and this may be different for each child.

I figured out the status of family member in the reverse manner.  I am a nonnie, but both my kids are secretors, so my husband has to be a secretor.  However, both my kids have my rare blood antigen, the Mg antigen, so they got that from me.  Genetics is very interesting.

When they were smaller, I remember DD1 used to  be very vigilant about brushing her teeth and DD2 would brush them about once every 3 months. Guess which one got the most cavities? The one who brushed carefully!

DD2 does have a few cavities now (all her years of not brushing eventually caught up with her) but not nearly as many as her sister, and she still doesn't brush diligently. She also eats a lot more sugar and uses a floride-free toothpaste when she does brush. (She also had a dramatic reaction to cutting out wheat and switching to spelt.)

DD1 hasn't had any new fillings in a few years, but she's been super-diligent with the brushing and flossing and she uses flouride toothpaste or rinse once or twice a day. For her in particular, the flouride seems to be protective. She's also very prone to skin irritations and infections, and doesn't seem to have any beneficial result from cutting out wheat if she replaces it with spelt. My gut feeling is that spelt is bad for her too, even if it causes a milder reaction than wheat does.

DS has pretty good teeth- a few cavities but far fewer than DD1 had at age 9. I'd also be very surprised if he was a nonnie, considering his strong reaction to tomatoes.

Interesting - it is probably as you suspect from your earlier post.  DD1 seemss like a nonnie while DD2 and DS seem like secretors.  It sounds like getting DD1 tested for her birthday would be a wonderful gift.  I say go for it if the budget allows!

I'm already SWAMI'd. A year and  a half ago, Andrea ran SWAMI for me twice, once with each secretor variation. When I went to her for the secretor test (she took care of all the "biohazard" shipping etc) she re-measured me (apparently she wanted a guinnea pig to practice all the stuff she learned at the latest convention) and re-ran SWAMI, this time with "floating" secretor status. We also updated it with things like my new weight and the fact that I'm no longer taking any meds.  The computer decided I was a nonnie, and I would have asked her to re-run it and email me a new copy if I'd turned out to be a secretor.

Now I can safely print out the newer version of SWAMI.

Yes there is, and it explains so much doesn't it! on the coconut oil. I'm eating a lovely salad with allowed fruits and coconut oil right now...YUM!! Welcome again Ruthie..
