So with Swami I am once more looking at what I can eat.. as Gatherer O non with diabtes and neuropathy and acid reflux or  gastroparesis....

below I listed all foods but my question one more time.. IF I do not eat any of the ones with *** stars *** and those seldom if ever with ** stars and dairy * star for new foods for now...

The way I SEE IT AS EVERY day 1 portion of meat and every other day turkey added for lunch???.  or is it  one portion meat or turkey once a day alternated?

Since I eat no beans and no grains, nor bread and sedom roots .. then can I substitute other foods?  Like EXCHANGE THE SUGAR VALUE of those foods for foods only eaten outside? .. and make them feel like a treat or some food I can have sometimes ???

LIKE let's say ricepudding? or the like?  what is your opinion or decree?   or creme brulet' or icecream?  (yes I know you are ready to pull out your hair. .)   or regular chocolates with nuts, or some avoid like vinegar twice a month?

My portion sizes and frequencies are strikingly similar to yours Goldie, only that my 7 servings of meat a week are divided up into 2 servings poultry and 5 servings red meat (not that I ever eat that much meat or that little poultry in a week...) and you get an extra egg per week and slightly larger dairy servings. Fruits, live foods, grains, and fish are exactly the same as yours.

Goldie, just my two cents for what it's worth, but for now I wouldn't get into making substitutions if I were you.  I'm not sure whether you mean subsitituting an avoid (e.g., sugar) for a food on SWAMI that you don't eat (e.g., beans), or playing around with your carbohydrates, but I would just follow SWAMI as closely to the letter as possible right now if I were you.  I know how difficult it is to eat out and stay compliant, believe me.  But rationalizing it by saying your rice pudding out (with avoids) is taking the place of SWAMI recommended carbs is probably not the way to go.  I hope you don't mind my being frank.  Don't go there.  Make compliant rice pudding at home, and know you have it there as a treat for when you get home.  Maybe the knowledge that there are compliant treats at home will make it easier for you to be out and decline the non-compliant treats.  I mean this with the best intention.  When you are non-compliant, and we all are at times, just know that there will be consequences.  It's your choice.

I see it as "red meat or poultry" once a day, "fish, eggs, beans, or cheese" once a day, plus an egg every morning (if you feel the need for protein to start the day) plus small amounts of cheese in other meals as condiments, not as major protein sources.

If you're not eating beans, eat nuts instead- they fill the same role in SWAMI already.

If you're not eating grains, then you have two options: simply omit them and have less food, or substitute starchy (or moderate carb) veggies in their place. But since you're already struggling to eat enough vegetables, here's how I suggest you think about it: Feel free to eat 1-2 servings of starchy veggies per day, plus eat as many leafy greens and lowcarb veggies you're able to. If the whole thing totals 5 cups, you're doing great! If it's less, keep trying. If you go over: no big deal, some of those are subbing for the grains you're not eating.

Alternatively, try adding in some grains or root veggies, and see if that takes care of some of your cravings for sweets.

You have no business eating rice pudding, period. Stick to your neutral and beneficial cheeses for your only dairy products. No refined sugar, period!!!  If you must eat in a restaurant, order grilled meat or fish with salad (with olive oil and lemon wedges) and/or steamed veggies, with a little butter or olive oil.

Do what you can to minimize the times you're eating away from home. Get out of the habit of eating at social gatherings. Have a cup of seltzer or green tea while your friends are eating lunch- just so you have something to consume while chatting at the table. Your problem is never with the compliant foods at home- you need to change your mindset about eating when you're NOT at home.

If you must "let something go" then don't worry too much about portion sizes of oils when you're away from home. Os tend to gain weight from carbs, not fat. And the vinegar once or twice a month? If you're really limiting it to once every two weeks, it may not cause any problems- but then again, it might. I personally can get away with that because I don't have any GI issues, but for you, vinegar may slow down the healing of your stomach.

I strongly suspect that neutrals wouldn't bother you so much if you were 100% compliant, in the home and out. You'd be expanding your food choices, not limiting them, by increased compliance.

O in Virginia I AM really in favor of helping me with your answers even if I don't like them like no  icecream.. haha   Thanks.. I always am rather open and 'honest' about my stuff so no problem here.. I THANK all ..

Dairy: Portion Size: Milk: 6 ounces; Cheeses: 2-4 ounces; Ghee and Butter 1 teaspoon
Frequency: 4 servings weekly.

does that mean 6 oz total or in addition to cheese? .. for now I am thinking it's EITHER 6 oz milch OR 2-4 oz cheese.. NOT both..

SO.. you think rice pudding out of the house has avoids?? that is most likely the question for me?  You see I have not had dairy nor rice in years and so seeing the list for dairy is really confusing me..

for me to make rice pudding at home would seem much to dangerous.. I would eat it.

ruthiegirl  I used to eat meat or turkey lunch and dinner every day.. and only last year cut the portions size.. I did fine.. but now with Swami, I am weaning me off that and other expectations.. (habits)

so meat turkey only once for dinner.. ?

the rest just vegetables??   OR

somewhere it also indicates that I can have prtein powder every other day.. is that in place of the one egg or in place of the meat???  what do you think.. ?

so I see where you eat more vegetables then I have so far..

Breakfast : that menas I will have protein powder OR 1 egg with 1/4 smear ghee
Snack: cup of broth.. with hand vegetables .. or is broth a protein REPLACEMENT?

Lunch: two cups vegetables 1/2 tsp olive.. (any dressing?? what)
Snack: one fruit - maybe with some pumpkin seeds...

Dinner: meat or turkey 1/2 olive oil and salad or vegetables.
snack: second fruit..

does that seem to be correct?    and I am working on "no" more desserts.. hope to retrain me - within the next two weeks.. it takes that long to learn anything.. like    haha

I just figured something out .. I am needing to go out to dinner by7 .. but I am starving long before.. like right now--- today after having only had liquids all day.. .. SOLUTION:

I will eat a steak at home, as in now 5pm .. and have a nice salad this evening for dinner at 7pm..

in that way I can have both and not be hungry, snacking on everything in sight..

do you think this to be allowed?

Ruthie is the voice of reason and intelligence.

Yes, with the dairy frequency it is either/or.  Six ounces of milk = 1 serving.  Two to four ounces of cheese = 1 serving.  One teaspoon of ghee or butter = 1 serving.  If you get four servings a week, you can have one of each of these, plus one more.  Per week.

I don't think there are any SWAMI police lying in wait at the restaurant.

Our SWAMIs are different most likely, but when I'm hungry in the afternoon before dinner I have a banana and a handful of nuts and a glass of water (as I just now did).  That will hold me until I have dinner with my husband later.  And it's all superfoods.  Use your superfoods and diamonds to snack on, is my advice.  But you must experiment and find what works best for Goldie.

Ummm . . Goldie, surely you know the answer to this question!

Why not make it at home.  But use ingredients that are on your Swami food list.  Get creative and be compliant.

I eat 95% beneficials or super beneficials.. all others are only when nothing else will do.

Tonight the steak at 5pm was great.. I was not hungry even at 7.30 when I started dinner with friends.. I had a nice salad for dinner.. all satisfied.. I think I will do this from now on.. the meat at 5 gets me the 3 hours before bedtime .. better for my stomach to digest the meat while the salad later is enough to keep me happy.

Rice cooked in any form at home is way to dangerous.. as is any food not on the beneficial list.. I would eat it to the end.. Have not had any such carbs like that at home for many years- its not needed.  The two fruits are enough sweets.

as for milk after 35 years, no way I will go near it 'regularly'  / rather have some grated chese on salad... During the upcoming vacation I might be able to buy quark.. I will see how that fits, but even then I risk stomach pain.. and I am never going that far back in time.. memories still linger of my youth spent in pain... or the sinus being stuffed and mucucs bothering me all night.. scary..

NOW --- I am happy with the new schedule.. as typed above.. this discussion helped me greatly!!

Goldie, for the milk, would it not be referring to something like Rice Milk?  Or is that something you don't have either.  I might be reading it wrong, but for some reason I get the feeling you're referring to cow's milk.  Do I have that wrong?

YOU are right.. as GATHERER it seems we can have some dairy.. limited but still a little.

... so tiramisu.. is made with a little manchego cheese, a nice dessert, but it has ladyfingers in it?  They are backed with 'grains'

Gatherers Dairy for ME!

Benficials and Super Beneficial/Diamonds
Butter
Cottage Cheese
Ghee, Clarified Butter ◊
Manchego Cheese ◊
Paneer Cheese
Quark Cheese

Neutral

Farmer Cheese
Ricotta Cheese
Romanian Urda
Romano Cheese

all the rest are avoids still..

I never got into the nut milks.. I used to use fruit juices for liquids but now with diabetes that is to much sugar, so I use water.

Manchego cheese is most excellent!  My favorite cheese!  A slice of it is very satisfying when you might feel a need for a bit of food.  (from sheep)

O in Virginia.. In many ways I see the options much expanded, but in different ways also much less..

I ate meat or turkey twice a day .. now will try and eat more veggies and roots.. have no idea how that will do with hunger..

but I am retraining my "IDEAS' of eating for the next few weeks and then go to this way of eating..

7 am Breakfast: DPN O Protein powder OR 1 egg with smidgen ghee
10 am Snack: cup of broth.. with hand vegetables ..

12pm: Lunch: two cups vegetables 1/2 tsp olive.. new spices)
2 pm Snack: 1. fruit or prunes - maybe with some pumpkin seeds...

5pm Dinner: meat or turkey 1/2 tsp olive oil
7pm 2nd Dinner:  salad or vegetables with sprinkle of cheese.

Dessert: Berries or 2. fruit / juice..

ha - looks good typed.. now doing it.. haha    but I will be like ruthiegirl.. all organized..

the difference: she runs after her kids?? yes I do think so and she makes her own cheese!!! go girl!

Manchego cheese
is most excellent!  My favorite cheese!  A slice of it is very satisfying when you might feel a need for a bit of food.  (from sheep)  I did not need to know that, now I  am scared to try it..

You look like you're getting organized, too, Goldie.  At least having a plan is better than no plan.  If you fall short of the mark, you will get there in time.  It takes practice to instill new habits.  I believe you will find your way and discover what works best for you.  I would say trust your SWAMI and get to know it.  That's what I'm trying to do, so I'm giving you advice I'm also trying to follow.     Eating lots of fresh vegetables with your protein meals will reduce those cravings.  That truly does work.

Eating lots of fresh vegetables with your protein meals will reduce those cravings.  That truly does work.

that is all I eat.. my foods are simple.. meat turkey vegetables in my 5 inch pan.. now only 1 egg for breakfast, and 2 fruits -one is prunes, and when my intestines don't act up then I eat pumkinseeds or walnuts...

I cook fresh three times a day.  and drink hot cocoa pure in hot water.. most of the time.. takes my cravings totally AWAY.. hardly need 'something-anything' sweet nor chocolate nor icecream any more..

My avoids are mostly: vinegar or a ladyfinger with cheese or before October last, icecream or decaf  and coffemate .. on the occasion when I go out.

my house water is all filtered.. and I live in a quiet environment... To much alone time..

and I am stumped by diabetes .. I have NO so-called control over its age progression ..except now for Swami and many sups.. but then I pushed it out for many years by having done BTD beneficials from its inception.  My friends BTD-GENO and SWAMI ROCK! as do all who help me here to get a handle on it all.

2 QUESTIONS :  Do you think a teaspoon of concentrated Elderberry in the protein drink is a fruit value??

why am I trying to add UME?? what is it good for? like acid feflux??
- I cant find any mention in the Food list about it?  its a Beneficial in my Swami.. is it a fruit value with one teaspoon????

1 tsp of Ume is too much.  Try a few drops, just as if you were sprinkling Tamari on your food, or adding a sprinkle of salt.  It's a condiment, not a fruit serving . . extremely salty.  Not meant to be overeaten.  Yes, it does help with the acid problem.

Try 1 drop on your tongue.  Hold it there until you get lots of saliva, swish around your mouth, then swallow.

By any chance, does your swami give you Indian Buffalo Milk, mine does (4 oz)?
Is oat bran a diamond for you, if so I have dried mixing 1/4 cup and 1 egg, 2 tsp of diamond or/and SF spices to it, and cooking it in 1/2T olive oil, til brown on one side, then turn over, til brown on the other side.  Very tasty and I was able to get one grain serving in.  (If you like them you can make enough for a week and freeze, or refrigerate them and heat in microwave or eat cold.

about your meat and poultry servings, you can eat the 4 oz portion, instead of the 6 oz portion, and keep it at the frequency stated, and be right!

You can also sprinkle seeds & spices onto your egg, as it is cooking, just remember if flax, to grind first.  Have you thought about using your seed portion, and making a serving for rice pudding for yourself (substituting the rice for your seeds)  May be close in taste and texture.

I have just readjusted my Food Chart, so I can see exactly what I am supposed to eat.. (I will remail it )

geminisue   I am not eating any nuts right now as I somehow messed with my intestines (since childhood maybe) and now I aim to fix it.. might as well as I will change my eating habits drasticly.

I have not eaten grains, beans, breads, few fruits, dair (besides icecream), nor potatoes for 30 years.. more specific not for 15 years under BTD..  as a whole I am afraid to rock the sugar issues.. but I may have to see if I need to make 'thinking' adjustments.

On the whole I have not yet added rice as it makes me sleepy,  nor dairy which I might be allowed, but am afraid of belly aches, sugar and weight issues..

I am planning to eat:

cocoa powder hot water
1 egg,
4 oz of meat OR turkey at early dinner time
3 cups of vegetables and roots
2 cups of salad
1 cup of broth
2 fruits
ghee
olive oil
nuts

it is less then I ate before - but this may help my intestines.

for the specific questions on food values I will answer by tomorrow..

Goldie, are you only allowed 4 oz. of meat/turkey per day?  Are you getting enough food based protein?    I know you're drinking the protein powder mix;  How much of that are you eating?

The protein powder is only for NOW a few weeks to reduce the 'bulk or difficult' to digest foods.. trying to give my digestive system time to catch up. In O's the powder is really just eggs.. why not just eat on egg?? but right now I amEXCHANGING it for the fresh egg.. I dont know but I am trying  ... right now I am drinking 4 -1/2 portions up to 2pm. then a fruit.. I might be able soon to exchange some  with meat broth.. trying to make it 'liquidy-'  .. my goal is to RETRAIN my food eating habits.. and if it's meat/turkey for dinner only so be it..  BUT.....

well I am questioning the protein portion also .. .. since I dont eat fish..  I am wondering if I can exchange the 5 servings of fish for meat broth or soup ??  ???????????????????

red meat Portion Size: About the size of the palm of your hand (4-6 ounces)
Frequency: 4 servings weekly.

poultry Portion Size: About the size of the palm of your hand (4-6 ounces)
Frequency: 3 servings weekly.

fish/seafood Portion Size: About the size of the palm of your hand (4-6 ounces)

Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!

Yes, if it works for you and it's the only way you can get the compulsive eating under control.  That makes sense.  I'm a fan of whole food, so I hope you can gradually come up with some real food that is easy for you to digest and helps you feel satisfied.

Meat broth would be good for you if it is made from real meat (not those packets you get in the grocery).  I would especially like to see you start making long-simmered bone broths, you could mix it with your meat broth and sip it all day.  Great stuff!  Very healing, rich in minerals and other stuff your body will soak right up.
But, it does not count as a meat/fish/poultry serving.  It is not a source of very much protein.  But it could be extremely satisfying for your body.

If you could get in the habit of making a hearty, nutritious soup or stew once a week, enough to last the rest of the week, I think it would change your life!  I'll be happy to give you my recipe if you'd like.  This has been a major benefit for my Gatherer daughter.

Regarding the fruit juice?  Whoa!  That's a ton of fruit sugar.

Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.
Let me not pass you by in quest
of some rare and perfect tomorrow.

I started a new thread with questions about MORE or NEW -for me- foods to be added.. the sugar question is a good one.. but I might have interpreted something wrongly.. It might indicate some fruit drink or some tea.. or.. something to be chosen from the LIST 3x a day..  grammar can be tricky.. with a one way mind..

grandmama made a soup ever saturday.. kept the broth for the week.. what is your recipy?  Yes I have followed your daughters ideas of what to eat when and it helped.. thank her for me..
