I want to know my secretor status but I can't afford to purchase the kit.  Is there any other way to know?

Roll a die. Heads, secretor, tails, non-secretor.

Seriously, there are certain blood tests that you may be able to convince your doctor to order and your insurance to pay for- others will chime in with the details.

Another option is to give the non-secretor diet a try, and see how you respond to it. I personally avoided all the non-secretor avoids and the secretor avoids for the first few months I was on BTD, until I did some healing and I was ready to test my reaction to potentially problematic foods.

Roughly 80% of all BT's are secretors and 20% are nonnies.

You might be a nonnie if:  You have problematic teeth.

If you are a regular blood donor or if you have been a regular blood donor, then the donor center may have already performed this test aka the Lewis blood group phenotype. You can ask them for any or all the different blood typing tests they have already performed on your previous blood donations.

If they have not performed this test, then you could request the test yourself. You will have to pay for the Lewis blood group phenotype test. But in the meantime you might be asked why you want the test, and you could tell them you want to know your ABH (O) secretor status for a special project or  something of that nature. It is worth a try anyway and a blood donor center may be less of a hassle in terms of having to have a doctors written orders for the test and may even be slightly cheaper than a hospital  or private reference laboratory blood bank.

I would make it simple.. I would eat as if you where a nonnie.. then after 2 weeks add a food left out before for nonnies and so see what your body tells you..

from experience .. you will be able to see quick enough.. I can tell from one fruit if I eat it whether I puff up, or sneeze, or cough, or itch, or feel restless, or thirsty, or just not as good, feel tired, can't sleep, feel discouraged, feel lethargic, have bathroom issues..

.. I pay attention .. and I KNOW NOW that I don't need to ask a doctor WHY I felt or feel miserable.. all I have to do is stay on my foods list and then all those things go away..

Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!

Actually you will always be guessing, bite the bullet and get it done. Are you due for a gift anytime soon, Birthday or other holiday? Put it at the top of the list and let some else help with the cost.

I got my nonnie status from the blood donor people as well. I went over there and asked them if they could do the Lewis test. They told me they would if I became a blood donor. Seemed like a fair trade to me.

I think that the Nonnie gag tape would run longer than the redneck tape.

I'm just new starting out with the O diet.  I have had remarkable good health all my life despite being overweight (and the same weight) since junior high.

If I had to "guess", I would suspect that I am a secretor as I don't get sick often, 3 to 4 years between colds, have fought off Hep C and pneumonia 3 times without any hospitalization.  AAAANNNNNDDDD, my eating habits were HORRIBLE!  Fast food most meals.  I shudder to think now what I have been doing to myself!

I wouldn't bet on that!  That just comes from being an "O".

Actually I may just follow Goldie's advice till I can afford the test.  I have been on the BTD since 10/4 and haven't noticed any difference except an easier period and a slight rise in energy.

I have had bad teeth all my life...I'm loaded with fillings.

I think I would use Goldie's method, too.  And I also like Ruthie's comments...we're all individuals.  SWAMI is the best we've got, but our complexity as human beings goes further than SWAMI.  Even with the secretor test and, I would venture to say SWAMI (though I haven't done mine yet), I would think you still have to pay close attention to your reactions.  If something bothers you, don't eat it.

I was going to wait for my secretor test, too, but I when I was looking at my credit card points I saw that they will convert them to credit your account, so that covered the cost of my secretor test.  Checking with a blood donor agency to see whether they will do the Lewis test for donating blood, as mentioned above, seems worth investigating.

O's can get away with a lot - if there is enough physical exertion.  I could eat two full-length subs for lunch and still stay slim, when I was clearing out abandoned houses 10 hours a day.

They don't mention this test on their website.  But I fired a question off to them about this.  I'll let everyone know what I find out.

My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant.  Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index.  DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.

I should find out if they can do that test at the local blood drive, or if I would have to go to a Red Cross center for that. It would be wonderful if I could find out the secretor status for myself and my oldest daughter that way!

No they don't because then everyone who knew anything about it would be asking for it. And some of the more rarer antiserums are quite expensive, but not the Lewis antiserums as compared to some of the others.

More than likely you will need to contact the reference lab at the blood donor center. They are really the ones you need to ask.

The reference department is the one that performs the special blood grouping on donors.

I think one has to be 17 to donate blood, unless it changed, and there is also a weight factor, to consider, for young one, have to weigh at least___  don't remember. but good luck, hope you get your secreator status this way.
