Hi,

I am a type O-nonnie, explorer and I am flying back to Belgium on Monday, May 31st with Air Canada.  There are special meal plans for the flight but none of them seem safe to me (and by safe I mean no chance of sugar.  I find the rest easy to deal with by just eating sensibly and avoiding gravy, sauces, and salad dressing).  My company pays for business class for all international trips, so it would be nice to take advantage of the great meals.  But here's the question:   How do I avoid sugar on their meal plans?  I wanted vegetarian raw but that's not available.  Here is the list:

# Asian vegetarian meal
# Infant or baby's meal
# Bland/soft meal
# Child's meal
# Diabetic meal
# Fruit platter meal
# Gluten-free meal
# Hindu meal
# Kosher meal
# Low-calorie meal
# Low-cholesterol/low-fat meal
# Low-sodium meal
# Muslim meal
# Non-lactose meal
# Vegetarian meal (non-dairy)


I can and did bring my own food the first time:  Sliced turkey, kohlrabi, carrots, and nuts on the flight there so I made out OK in that direction and should be able to again.  On the way back I didn't have as much food prepared to take with me but the menus seemed particularly unsafe and I ended up asking for just a plain salad.  The stewardess on the long flight ended up feeling sorry for me and suggested that I book a special meal 24 hours in advance.  

So if anyone has an idea, I have until Sunday afternoon to make my request for the way there.  

For the return trip, I have until July 3rd or so to make a special request for the journey back.

go with the food platter and make your own sandwiches with compliant ingredients

rice cakes, sardines, I d take along my salad, hard boiled eggs.....
no matter what you chose, airplane lunches are inedible, we know that!!

Air Canada is pretty good with the gluten free meal, or kosher meal.  I usually order the gluten free and I can eat most of the things on the plate.

I have been a flight attendant for 18+ years and trust me when I say, "There ain't any airline meals that are great".  They are loaded with sodium and preservatives.

If it were me and I had to choose, I woud choose kosher or muslim meal.  This way you won't get pork and ham is a biggie with airline meals.  Chicken is also a biggie and I can't do that either.

This is a good thread. Reminds me to pack my own food for my future air travels. I think I will do well with a salad, hard boiled egg, a can of sardine or pink salmon, some bison jerky, homemade granola bars and a pack of Vivani chocolate

Flying long distances, I take my homemade "freezer bag meals", dried ground beef or turkey, dried rice, dried seasonal veggies and spices.  Just add hot water, let sit for 10 or so minutes and I've got myself a decent compliant meal. I do look silly eating out of a freezer bag   It's especially great for the return flight.

Also, I've noticed at high end sporting good stores freeze dried backpacking meals that, if I remember right, had pretty good ingredients.  Expensive though.

If your staying at a hotel, see if they will fix your meal to take on the return trip. take a few extra zip. bags etc.To give them. If you have a little cooler they will keep it frozen for you. If they don't find a mom and pop place that will. But I've find the most hotel restaurants are very happy to please. They will just need to know about it early. so contact as soon as you settle in.

Kathleen, how did you make those dried foods? Do you use a dehydrator?

Yes, I use my inexpensive dehydrator.  It just takes awhile so need to plan ahead.  Cook ground beef or turkey, rinse with water to remove fat (fat spoils) then dry in dehydrator.  Same thing with veggies and rice (don't rinse!).  Don't use minute rice, I believe they spray the rice with something to keep the grains from clumping.  I got a KILLER headache when I subbed it in once..... wanted to save some time!  Combine your meat, rice and veggie selections with dried herbs/spces in a freezer bag and you're ready to fly compliantly.  I freeze the bags until I'm ready to pack but no need to freeze as your traveling.  Note!!! I usually carry an extra empty bag, one time a meal leaked after putting water in, the meat has sharp edges and I think it punctured the bag!!!

How did you dehydrate the rice?  Mine has racks and the rice would fall through.  Do you leave it in a bowl in the dyhydrater.

Thanks for your instructions. I think I might have a big problem finding cheap dehydrators because the only ones I have seen in my country are, I believe, Excalibur and they cost about US$400

I think I remember reading a post by Kathleen about food she took camping and I was impressed then! What a creative and effective idea to dehydrate meals, wow! You put 'easiest option' BTdieters like me to shame.

Wonderful idea for a thread!! Thanks!! I always have trouble with airline meals!! No selection covers O nonnies!!?? Good suggestion re the koscher or Muslim!! Now to find an airline in this part of the world that serves those meals (they should everywhere)

Hey, gotta wonder how would you actually go with hard boiled eggs and/or sardines enroute??!! They stink enough in the tearoom at work & there I can at least open the window??

Last flight back from Sydney, I wrapped up some gluten free food from the airport lounge so I'd have something other than the two available on board choices - breaded (dreaded?) fish burgers or shepherd's pie...
But even having done that, I was extremely bloated & uncomfortable (must have had something like corn or potato starch??!!

Incidentally I've heard, (& am not surprised) that more celiacs are reacting to the over use of corn ingredients in gluten free food...??!!

Hmmm great idea re the dehydrating food to take with you...I am just a little concerned at using plastic wrap in a heated environment??!! Could you not use baking/parchment paper?

No... This was taking food from the Air NZ lounge in Sydney airport, onto the plane... Maybe shouldn't even do that (don't know) but I knew what I would face for dinner otherwise...

tessUK, Lola and Frosty,  thank you for the compliments so glad you liked my idea    I started this a number of years ago after food shopping for a backpacking trip.  No way could I eat those prepackaged meals.  Then a couple of years ago when planning a trip to Peru, I realized hey my backpacking meals would be perfect for the 20+ hour trip.  I've also dried spelt cake; add the hot water, let sit, add chocolate chips - yummmm

When I travel for pleasure, I travel in uniform with my Company ID that says CREW on it.  I do this so I can get all my liquids through security check point.  Liquids like shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, hand gel, facial cleanser, serums and moisturizer etc.  Flight attendants get through with this stuff because we need it to care for our hygiene on overnights

Travel between Australia & NZ you can't take certain foods on flights - dairy, honey, dried meats, just to mention a few... Oh & we only get 100 mls of liquid & it can't be in a container any bigger than that...

Anytime you change countries you can't take certain foods in or out.  It has been that way for years.  And the What and the rest of us don't comment???  Nevermind, I couldn't explain it to you.  You won't get it.  I probably said to much anyway.
