I know I need to test them but wondering...do they have a higher risk because I am?.....even though they are all B positive and I am AB positive? |

secretor status is a recessive gene..... you can only find out through testing...... |

Funny enough I am a non-secreter and my brother is almost for sure a secreter.
My Father is most likely a non-secreter and my mother is a secreter.
However my brother and I mostly take off from my father as far as physical traits go even though my grandma might be where I get some things from.
My point being that the genes may or maybe not associated with secreter may not be leading determinates, but rather tagging along with phenotype and health may have more to do with the choices of genetic expression. I am sure Dr. D could say more on this or tell us what is right. |

Secretor genetics are similar to blood type and Rhesus type genetics. Secretor/non-secretor status is not the same as Rhesus and is not related. Each of us has two alleles, one from each of our parents.
A secretor allele is known as "S" A non-secretor allele is known as "s"
You can only be a non-secretor if you got a non-secretor allele from each of your parents. A non-secretor can only have two "ss" alleles, and can only pass on non-secretor alleles to their kids because that's all they have.
A secretor can be: "SS" - inherited a secretor allele from each parent, or "Ss" - inherited a secretor allele from one parent, and a non-secretor allele from the other.
Your kids will each have one "s" allele from you, because that's all you have. If their father is also a non-secretor "ss", they will be "ss" - non-secretors.
If their father is "Ss" or "SS", they could be either. The non-secretor "s" is indeed recessive (I think that's what Lola meant), which means that if their father is "Ss", they are more likely to inherit his "S" allele than his "s" one. But as we don't know his status, we can't predict that.
There's more to it than that, but that's the simple scientific explanation - I hope I haven't confused you! |
| Note to self: I am me, and also an O-nonnie - I'm allowed not to fit the mould. |

by recessive I mean the trait isn t dominant......it s like playing the roulette, sometimes you inherit, sometimes you don t. if it were a dominant trait, there d be many more nonnies in this world! |

We should make an AB Non-Secretor thread! I wonder if there is an AB negative non-secretor somewhere on this forum. |

If both the mother and father are non-secretors, then all the children will be non-secretors. Thus, if you are a non-secretor, and the father tests and finds that he is a non-secretor, all the children are non-secretors. If you are a non-secretor, and the father is a secretor, then each child must be tested to see if they are a secretor or non-secretor. Let me know if you have more questions about this. I'll make a new shorter/less boring video. |

There are two or three AB -ve nonnies on the board. |

It would be good if there was a way to search by shield types to find people of a certain group! There are many rare types on here . What are the chances of being AB and a Nonnie? Squirrel, thanks for explaining secretor genetics! |
