Let's all share our favourite nonnie compliant treat or snack. I've been baking my favourite pumpkin bars for months for hubbie's breakfast, and I usually sample one or two too - just to make sure they're OK, you understand...  

The recipe is still fine for A-nonnies, but now I have to work on cooking up an O-nonnie version over the next few days, so I'll post the results then.

I normally eat some in-the-shell peanuts for a snack.  They take a while to eat and they're crunchy, which I like.

Sounds delicious, but apples (applesauce) is an avoid for O non  Maybe your might change it to the prunes liquified a bit.  Than it would be compliant for all O's.

Geminisue - yes, and so are cinnamon, soy milk and dates - oh and figs make my mouth swell up even though I'm supposed to be able to eat them  . I've just baked up a batch using mashed banana instead of apple sauce, 1 cup rye flour/1 cup rice flour, and for my next trick (ta-da) it will feature mangoes. I'll let you know how it turned out (munch) when it cools down enough (ouch) to try.

Mitchie - yes that's my hubbie's late-night munchie of choice too.

Any more good ideas?

I've adapted my favorite comfort food.....toasted cheese sandwich.  I use spelt bread and mozarella cheese slathered with ghee.

I love Lundberg Organic Sweet Mochi Rice Cakes, lightly toasted and spread with a mixure of 1/2 almond butter and 1/2 chopped walnuts.  Then I lightly drizzle the top with blackstrap molasses.

My other favorite comfort food is sweet potatoes, baked in their skins (with a bit of olive oil rubbed on, first), and topped with a little ghee and wild chinook salmon (cooked just about any way, but baked is my standard).

my loves are chilli corriander pesto; made with walnuts and heaps of garlic.
and my new fav cheese on toast: goats cheese, sea salt, fresh black pepper, vinegar and lemon juice on spelt (i used to live on avocado on toast like this, alas, an awesome substitut!)

OK, I tried out my nonnie version of pumpkin bars today. It turned out a little stodgy but my art class helped me empty the box with no complaints!

I used (instead of):
spelt flour  1 cup rice flour + 1 cup rye flour
1 tbs baking powder  1 3/4 tsp baking powder
baking soda  1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
apple sauce  1 cup mashed banana
soy milk  home-made rice milk (see thread on how to make it yourself )
ground cloves = allspice (cloves are OK for all, but I only had allspice)
pitted dates  1/2 cup mixed raisins (black and golden) and pine nuts
1 1/2 cups chopped prunes

They only needed 30 minutes baking in my oven. Enjoy!

My organic whole rye flour is very heavy. I'm going to try with kamut flour next. White rye flour might be lighter.

P.S. Lola - I had some almonds soaking all ready to make almond milk, then I checked and it's an avoid for O-nonnies. Doh. I wonder why we can have almonds but not almond milk, which is nothing but almonds and water.....???

Homemade almond milk should be ok...no reason to be too hard on yourself

I have this walnut/prune/pear chutney that just taste so good that I seem to be eating it all the time- on cheese on eggs on ricecakes on sweet potatoes.. I can┤t stop.

Dry figs stuffed with walnuts, yum. Even tastier when you warm them slighty under the broiler. Works with fresh figs as well.

My favorite (easy) compliant treat is a LaraBar. There are several flavors that work for me: my favorite is Cherry, second is Apple Pie. I keep one of these in my purse for emergencies.

Aha! I see now. OK well I'll remember that for next time. This time I made the rice milk instead (and it took me ages ) and that seemed to work.

Henriette - is your chutney made without vinegar? (Hoping against hope here )

Well your A and B snacks sound yum yum yummy, but are no good for me   Any O-nonnies out there willing to share their favourite treats and snacks?

No it is with vinegar
-BUT I do think it could be made with lemonjuice and other sweetner:

Here it goes:

Pear - prune and walnut chutney


2 large onions
500 gram/ 1 pound ripe but firm pears- peeled cored and diced
125 gram/4.5 oz agen prunes ( or other high quality - quartered
3 cm / 1.2 inch fresh ginger- peeled and finely choped
125 g / 4.5 oz dark muscovado sugar ( brown soft high molasses sugar) use other sweetner
100 ml/ 3.4 fl oz water maybe use a little bit more if you use lemonjuice
200 ml / 6.7 fl oz apple cider vinegar ( or try with lemonjuice - I think lemonjuice is tarter than ACV - so try with a little less first.
75g/ 3 oz walnut pieces


Put all ingredients (not the walnuts) in a heavybased saucepan - and stir over medium heat - bring to boil- and reduce and let it simmer for about 1 hour untill thick and reduced- add walnuts the last 15 minutes,. Pour into sterilised jars and seal.
makes aprox 3 x 450 gram jars.

O snacks...
My "little" O LOVES roasted beef in thin slices with a few thin carrots and red pepper stick in the middle-roll up and dip in horseradish mayo.
Walnuts roasted with chiliflakes and sea salt is another favourite.

My favourite snack is peanut butter on rice cakes . . . I will often put fruit sweetened cranberry jam on it too.  Very good.  Too good, in fact, as I very seldom buy it anymore.

Another snack that I just discovered is freezing crushed pineapple in ice cube trays (I sweeten first with some stevia).  I take a couple out in the evening and let them sit for a minute or two, before I start chomping on them.  Satisfies my need to munch and it's not so fattening.

A big bowl of cottage cheese mixed with one of those little fruit cups.  I know there's sugar in the syrup, and cottage cheese is just a neutral for B-nonnies, but it's like heaven in a bowl!   Same with beef.  I will fry up some ground beef with onions, melt some cheese into it, and who needs rice or pasta?  Makes me think I'm not getting enough protein in my diet since beef and cottage cheese are both full of it.

ok......they are those little silver dollar size wafers....WF makes a version...it has rice flour, sesame flour, safflower oil( ), wasabi pwdr, (wonderful bite) soy sauce.
there is another type, same look, made by another co. with no avoids...its called black sesame rice crackers.....forgot co.

Three of my best snacks, all very easy:

Cold canned crushed pineapple, juice pack, 1/2 can.  4 tablespoons of flax seeds, fresh ground in a seed grinder or a coffee grinder dedicated to flax seeds.  Top the bowl of cold crushed pineapple with the ground flax seeds.  Press down with a spoon until the topping is moist.  You can add a few walnuts to this if you want, at the bottom of the bowl, or mixed into the pineapple.

Frozen banana and small squares of dark chocolate, a small bite of each, then chew.

Banana dipped in nut/cocoa/agave spread

halva - tahini and honey smooshed together into a slab and cut into chunks

Avocado on rice cakes

Buckwheat pancakes with honey and lemon drizzled on top

carrot, lemon and apple smoothie

one cup of pitted dates, soaked in hot water till soft, drained, pits removed

1/2 - 3/4  cup of almond or peanut butter

1/3 cup of cocoa or carob powder.

Process in food processor until well blended.  If batter is too stiff, add a bit of the drained out
date water.

At this point, I put mixture into dish with a lid and refrigerate....just eat a little with a spoon when I need something sweet.

I also like to cut the core out of an apple and stuff with peanut butter.

I like to take a slice of turkey, butter it with grainy mustard, place a slice of cheese on top and
add cultured veggies or sauerkraut.  Roll up tightly and slice. OMG...this is really good!

Kale chips - wash and trim out stalk, cut kale into smaller pieces, spread one layer of kale on baking tray, spray with olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and grill, or sprinkle with parmesan cheese and grill...yummmm (they go soft after a while so don't make too much)
