Is there a scientific reason why this is?

When I started the BTD I found that all my really really favourite staple foods and treats were avoids: bread, potatoes, coffee, cheese, Ben'n'Jerry's etc.

I started with the secretor foods, since 80%+ of the population are secretors. I got used to it, stopped missing my favourite avoids, developed new favourites: spelt pizza, Tamari, hot chocolate with soy milk. Then I discovered that I'm a nonnie so a pile more foods dropped off the list - and almost without exception, they were my new favourites. Eating has gone back to a necessity rather than a pleasure - until I get used to it again.

Is it just me? Or did anyone else find this?

I found the same thing to be true for me.  I know that wheat and dairy have addictive and morphine-like properties.  I had such strong cravings when I quit those two foods 10 years ago that I would pace the house begging my mother for a slice of bread.  She learned to make spelt bread, but it wasn't the same because I didn't get the wheat buzz.  After I got used to it, of course, it was great, and I love it now (except I can't eat it because I'm trying to rid myself of Candida).  I used to dream about cheese.  I would actually dream I was eating a cheeseburger and then wake up and wonder if I'd really done it or not, and if I would have a reaction the next day.  A few nights ago I dreamed I ate some mashed potatoes.

Sometimes eating is simply a necessity.  On those days I try to read something while I'm eating, and it keeps my mind off my food.

I routinely bring my own food to church on Sundays (we have a pot-luck lunch every week) and once I had brought some lentil soup.  I like lentil soup a lot, but that particular day I was really enticed by the sight of a key lime pie and I was feeling a bit sorry for myself.  Somebody looked into my bowl and said, "Yuck.  You actually like that stuff?"  I went   and said, "I don't eat it because I like it, I eat it because it makes me feel good."

Keep on keepin' on, Squirrel.  It'll get better.  Look around for a few new recipes to try.

Oh yes, Ben'n'Jerry's are (is?) big here. Like a big slap in the face.   That was rude commenting about your lentil soup. I know it looks a bit sludgy, but you don't point that out to the cook. Blinkin' cheek. Actually that's a good idea. I must make some - thx for that!

I don't get cravings exactly, although I can relate to dreaming about forbidden things. It's more like despair over what I can do with what's left on the compliant list that's different and tasty. I try to have protein-rich O-compliant lunches while my husband is at work, then something neutral for me but beneficial for him in the evening.

I've been working on some new recipes. It's the flavourings, or lack of, that get me. I know I'll get used to it, but right now I'm so fed up with the same herbs and spices, onion and garlic. I'm fed up with beef and salmon, worried I'm eating too much fish, and I'm dreading the day that salt pops onto the avoid list!!   (Aargh no, mustn't even joke about a thing like that!)

I'm starting to feel as though I'm spending my whole life researching for recipes, shopping for food, cooking it and washing up after it. Oh, and the odd bit of laundry and house-cleaning.  

OK, whinge over. Positive thoughts now. I made a wicked fried chicken with lemon juice and garlic chunks, with rice pasta, pumpkin and broccoli last night. That was tasty! And hubbie enjoyed it too.

I feel that pain.  I was addicted to Di Giornio's rising crust pizza.  It was a major staple for me.  And, my breakfast was always two bowls of cold cereal.  It was way hard to quit.  Fortunately, I can still have a bowl of organic "Cheerios" now and then, and thank heaven for spelt, but I haven't managed to make a spelt pizza yet.  After the wheat withdrawal went away it just wasn't quite as important

I have the same exact realization.  The only thing I do periodically get is a bit of a craving for carbs but, almost immediately, I get massive headaches and pain in my guts after having them.

Me too.  Especially when you know how it makes you feel.  

I used to feel like you too with eating compliantly Squirrel, but once you get on this way of life for quite sometime and have the avoids and see how you feel...much rather feel the good way.

I've already told this story before but I just love it too much.

I was once at my mother in law's with all my husband's family. Five O's and five A's. There were two dishes to choose from. Pasta or beef.

All the A's picked the beef and all the O's picked the pasta(including me ). We all commented on how we were eating our favourite dish .

Often times I have abandoned the BTD quite cross because I was on it to have more energy to do more things and I was experienceing more energy, great, but unfortunately it seemed as if all the extra energy was being spent on extra shopping and cooking .

I always come back because the energy and sense of well being is quite worth it and, I have found out that once I get into the routine I do not need so much extra time so I do have some extra energy .

I have managed to do some easy compliant meals.

Susana - we're all in the same boat as far as finding something new to feed our families is concerned, nonnies or not!

And ditto to your family story. Before we started on the BTD, my A hubbie was the carnivore and I was the veggie. We did ask whether we could have a blood transfusion and swap blood, but apparently not!   

OK, I'm going to stop regretting what used to be, and start celebrating what we are. I'm going to start a new post about favourite compliant treats and snacks......

Ok, I'm a rebel.  If I'm really craving something and can't get it out of my head I just eat it and suffer whatever consequences come.  Yesterday I was having an uncontrollable urge to eat some beef (always has been my fave meat) so I had a big hamburger patty with some equally evil mustard.  

It was heaven.  I popped a couple Deflect, gave myself permission to throughly enjoy it and I did.  I'm definitely not a 100% compliant girl but I've improved my eating habits tremendously this year so I'm still proud of myself.

Anyway, if I was ever 100% compliant about anything I would think I had gone over to the dark side.

I love beef too!  I actually crave it.  I cook a pot roast for my husband and drool as he devours it while I sit there and eat scrambled "eggs" (tofu) again.  Sometimes when I really feel like I need some red meat, I'll go ahead and spend the money and buy a leg of lamb.  It makes me feel good.  The iron, I suppose.

An A2 can eat beef?  Now I'm confused.

I have to do that occasionally.  I really like fried catfish, being a southerner and growing up with it fresh-caught from the neighbor's pond.  So when we find ourselves eating out, which isn't often, obviously, I like to eat it even with all its avoids.  You know, pop a couple of Deflects and enjoy it anyway.     So last Saturday on the way back from a wedding reception, we stopped at a steakhouse and I got the fried catfish, "lightly battered."  What they didn't say was "lightly buttermilk battered."  So for a week now I've been paying for it.  A week!  Usually dairy blows through in 24 hours.  Why it's taking a whole week I'll never know.  Maybe I didn't get enough for it to blow through all at once and it's just trickling through.  Crazy.  I proved to myself  once again, like you, Squirrel, that my body really doesn't want milk.

I like compliant foods, but miss certain avoids like potatoes which make me feel good (whereas wheat makes me feel sluggish).
Since I think I'm a nonnie, I probably eat too many neutrals, but there are not enough beneficials always available.
Like someone else said on the board, I feel I spend so much time fixing, eating, & cleaning up! I love cooked veggies, but can eat huge amounts. It takes time to clean them properly!!
I may crave certain avoids, & am disappointed so many economical foods are not for the O-nonnie!
My AB husband likes a mixture of avoids & beneficials.
He never cared that much for chicken, but in his older age eats it more often, but not too much. I don't pick fights about those things. Someday he may feel absolutely miserable & I may suggest a month on the BTD. But I don't push. He's under enough pressure from work, etc. that I'm not bugging him!!

In conclusion, some of us mostly crave avoids & some of us mostly crave bennies. My hubby & I are somewhere in the middle.
I am pretty compliant abuot avoiding avoids, but forget that too many neutrals don't build health that fast!
We are all still learning!!!!!!!!!

Isn't it funny how we keep having to remind ourselves of what we already know?

I tend to eat a whole lot of neutrals, then I'll fix myself a meal of mostly beneficials and then remember that I really do feel my best then.  Big pot of lentil soup will last me a few days and I have to spend less time in the kitchen and more time keeping my children from arguing.
