Does anyone know about arachadonic acid.  My NPath told me it could cause problems in my system and red meat has it.

AA (Arachidonic acid ) is an omega-6 essential fatty acid. You need some. The bad effects of AA are reduced by having a good ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 in your diet. If you restrict yourself to grass fed red meats (especially lamb) there should be no AA problem as grass fed meats are very high in omega 3's and low in omega 6's.

What would help more is staying away from other sources of omega 6 like soybeans and canola oil. Oh, they are avoids. Something to this diet, if I ever figure out what it is.....

EDIT: AA can be made in the body from linoleic acid (18:2) which is found in the largest quantities in.....yep, vegetable oils primarily and some nuts and seeds.

Hi luanaflacco,

AA(arachindonic acid) has much bad-press in the last few years and is often considered the 'bad guy' of the essential fats.  The problem is not the fat itself, but one of the chemicals it transforms into - prostaglandin E2(PgE2).  A very persuasive Barry Sears (Zone Diet) has proposed a diet very high in the omega-3 fish oils to undue the effect of PgE2.

In actuality, PgE2 is highly advantageous to our biology.  When produced by the pancreas, PgE2 specifically gets zinc from food and takes this to the liver.  Here the zinc is shifted onto a assembly and is sandwiched between a Membrane (on one side) and taurine (on the other).  The whole assembly is used to patch the hole in a cell-membrane that has used zinc before.

There are all sorts of fundamental problems this M-zinc-taurine resolves, including a cell's main stabilizer/protector.   [I highly suspect that AA (now part of the Membrane) is the connection point.  As such, it will once again transform into PgE2 to sequester zinc now for the cell's use. ]

Besides PgE2, AA transforms into a number of other chemicals (like thromboxanes) that are very important.  Doing this the Sears way (and your NP) also eliminates the effects of these.  I would highly recommend what Lloyd has stipulated with lamb instead.

Lola,  My NPath is an O and cannot eat red meat she says.  She tried the BTD but it did not work for her.

it might trigger cox 2 but I think and observed, that mostly when given Vit. E all is fine, dito I am nearly sure that it is a sideeffect to sell cox 2 inhibitors .....of chemical bases .... do a good balancing between  omega 3-6 & 9 and nearly all might be yuk

I am sure your NP can have other wonderful sources of protein from other animals, not necessarily beef if she so wishes.
she s much better off having protein than grains and legumes, that s a fact, being an O.
