I posted something about this before and lost the thread... I have been eating the endangered species brand 88% dark chocolate that has "water-filtered beet sugar". Since beets are compliant could this possibly be okay for me? And it's totally okay if you lie to me if the answer is "yes". Honestly, it feels better than anything else in terms of sugar, so I'm wondering...what do you all know about beet sugar? |

I found some complient enough chocolate at the local health food store but I cant remember the name of it. The ingredients were chocolate and agave necter that was it. It was organic and raw but there was no price. So my boyfriend and I went to buy it and the cashier said when we asked what the price was, that it is really the best chocolate but she couldn't figure out why the company had priced it at 9 dollars for a 1.5 inch by 1 inch by 1 inch piece. We then decided that no matter how good it was we weren't into paying 9 dollars for such a small piece of chocolate even if it is complient enough. If you want you can try to make some, others on this board have had some good results with this. |

beet sugar are made form sugar beets and not beet roots ! Any way I think that most high quality chocolates are ok- for B´s.... I havn´t found any that contains avoids/ large ammounts of avoids ... but then again I only buy the best dark chocolate - IF I got cheaper milk chocolate it would be a differnt matter.
MY favorites are : Valrhona Le Noir Amer 71% Cocoa | Extra Bitter
Dagoba ( organic)
Lindt
summerbird ( Organic)
Black and green chocolate. ( organic)

Beet sugar is an avoid for non-secretors.
Make your own chocolate treats - with cocoa or unsweetened chocolate - mix or melt with compliant stuff molasses, agave nectar, vegetable glycerine, ghee, nut oil, nut butter, etc. |

Wow-- NINE BUCKS for that little bitty piece of chocolate? No way! That's highway robbery! I've been making a Nutella substitute with walnut butter (almond butter works too, so does a blend of walnut and almond butter), ghee, cocoa powder, and a touch of agave nectar if I want something sweet. It's very good and enough like a bar of chocolate to make me happy. I just eat it right out of the container--limit two teaspoonsful at a time once a day when suffering chocolate cravings I like Dagoba, Lindt and Chocolove now and then as well. |

So I looked up the sugar beet and here's what I got:
Sugar beet From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.), a member of the Chenopodiaceae subfamily and the Amaranthaceae family, is a plant whose root contains a high concentration of sucrose. It is grown commercially for sugar.
The sugar beet is directly related to the beetroot, chard and fodder beet, all descended by cultivation from the sea beet.
If it's related to the root and chard it has to be okay, right?! Not like I'm attached to this chocolate or anything! (I'm not one for making my own stuff.) |

How do you know that? Somehow I've never found this reference in any of the BTD books I've read. What secret source do you have that I'm missing?! |

It is an avoid because it is sugar. Just because the sugar comes from sugar beets does not change the fact that it is sugar. |

In some areas of the world beet sugar is the "normal" kind of sugar.... They grow alot of it here - just outside my window. So beet sugar is not a miracle sugar for nonnies or secs it is just as bad as cane sugar |

You can try making your own: I found this in the ReciBase... Kate's Walnutty Chocolate. I think it's more like fudge, but sounds interesting, and compliant at least for As and Os. |

Perhaps try mixing and experimenting with cocoa powder or 100% dark chocolate squares, sweetener of choice, nuts/seeds, flavorings, spices.
Replicate the chocolate brands that you enjoy eating by making the chocolate compliant to your own taste preferences.

I can't have the stuff around right now due to being an OA person but I'm healing and getting leveled out with this eating regime. So maybe someday I can have it around and not just want to eat the entire batch!!! |

I usually want to eat the entire batch of almost anything I make, dessert-wise, which is why I only do it for special occasions or when I'm going somewhere where I can give it away. I love to bake, but I cannot be trusted! |

Understand you totally, I also am an OA person, and it is so hard to deal with, but like you probably take one meal at a time and if I realize I am overdoing I stop as soon as I can and put it away fast, and sometimes have to go to bed to get my mind off of it. Even beneficial foods can be a problems if you can't stop eating them. Best to you! |

Many OA people have problems they are not willing to face openly and don't know how to deal with them and food is there comfort, It's like you eat because your sad, mad, alone, happy, celebrating, even sleeping sometimes, some are in love with food to the point of sounding like the food is there lover, if you've ever heard a person describe something that makes your mouth water because it sounds so good, this is a person that loves food. There are meeting to go to and steps to work through just like AA infact the same steps except you change the word alcohol to food. just as bad.
I have to count hours between my meals, 4-5 between breakfast and lunch and 5-6 between lunch and supper and 11 between supper and breakfast. This helps me to do the right thing. I don't know what hunger feels like, unless it feels like your nausated. |

One thing we learn to do in OA (sometimes kicking and screaming the whole way), is to accept life on life's terms. Which means... some days we are lonely... or sad, or angry or afraid or in a fight with our loved ones... or whatever...
To not compulsively eat or drink or inject drugs or go shopping over lifes problems and issues, is accepting life on lifes terms. Overeating to the point of binging or then purging or even staving over something is not accepting life on lifes terms.
To live life with and in our feelings and not try to numb out. That is living life on lifes terms.
I've learned to be thankful for the addiction as it has taught me so much from a spiritual standpoint. More than I could ever really put into words.
Being abstinent is a true gift. Because for me, I have no willpower. That went out with the last diet I tried to follow! ha...
Thinking of being on a low calorie diet and being deprived of good moderate healthy meals makes me feel sick, mainly cause I did so many of them over the years having to measure and weigh or eat some piddly little tray meal with all kinds of preservitives in it. I tried JC once and the food tasted old and kind of mildewed. I quit after the first meal. And I could tell tons of other 'diet' stories and fasting stories and phen fen stories, and on and on.
The day I realized that I could actually eat good fats and meats and vegies, etc., and still loose weight down to where my body is healthy and happy... (not my mind or my image), but down to where my 'body' is where it naturally is supposed to be I was shocked and it took awhile for my pyche to actually come to believe it.
But it's true. It takes alot longer but the long term reward of 'learning' how to finally eat and take care of myself while still moving through the ups and downs of life is priceless and only something 'I' can do. No one can do that for me. I have to take responsibility for my actions and my life.
Sometimes it's damn hard and sometimes I slip but each time I've slipped back into bad eating, I suffer greatly and worse each time. So slow but sure, I'm saying... it's not worth it. I'll just sit here and be lonely or journal or go for a walk or whatever... anything than to put that first bite of sugar or junk in my body.
Speaking of having to count hours between meals... my last counselor, Becky who wrote the book Dieting - A Dry Drunk, (you can find it on the web), told me sometimes she would just have to sit and stare at her hand to try and make it through.
And when you get there, you know you really want to heal... you really want that abstinence and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it.
I go to a weekly OA meeting and the group I have found is wonderful and real. We share very vulnerable stories and it's a great support.
Blessings to all.
P.S. I made my first batch of beef jerky last night! Wow! it was so fun. I used a L'Equip Dehydrator. I loved it! |

Interesting, and not surprising, to see the emotional side of eating come up on the chocolate thread... isn't there some actual physiological emotional effect to eating chocolate?
As for beet sugar...I'm still trying to figure this one out. Yes, it is a kind of sugar, but it's source is different than cane sugar. Just like there is maple syrup, corn syrup, and rice syrup - all sugary syrups that come from different sources - but one is neutral for my type and the other two are avoids.
So... with that logic, can't beet sugar conceivably end up in a different compliance category than cane sugar?
(I'm still feeling good and losing weight just sticking to the 88% stuff, but I'm still wondering about this.) |

Hi Funkymouse, Could you please share your recipe for beef jerky with me? I haven't been able to locate any on the market without sugar and I have a good dehydrator so it would be fun to make my own. Thank you. Margaret |

Kate's Omega-3 chocolate is amazing! And good for you (well, mostly). Find it under TypeBase on the upper left hand of this site. |
