Hi,

I have a question about the Unibars and the Protein Blend for O. They have rice and apple in them. I'm trying to avoid all grains and anything else that might be a problem. I'd love to have some safe, convenient foods that I don't have to make myself.
Are the rice and apple fiber and pectin in these products good for nonsecretors?

I followed the BTD for type O secretors for 4 months very faithfully (before I knew my status). My ND said that I should see some good results within 3 months, but the diet didn't help me with any of my problems, so I gave it up. When I went back to eating everything (chocolate cake, ice cream!), I didn't notice anything negative.

Well, for some reason, it took 6 months to get my secretor test results. I had given the diet up after 4 months, but when the results came and showed nonsecretor, something in my mind kept wondering. Then a friend mentioned the diet, which she follows, though not faithfully, and from a very old book. She thought I should try again.

So, because following the O secretor diet carefully for 4 months made no noticeable positive changes, I've decided that the only way to try it is by being very faithful to the nonsecretor list and also avoiding all grains, as some have recommended in the forums.  

Does this mean that I can't have the products I mentioned?
Also, has anyone else experienced what I did -- no apparent benefit from the diet when secretor rather than nonsecretor status was followed?

Thank you so much for any replies! I have been learning lots browsing around, but I have not read everything in the forums yet (that will take a long time).

What health issues were you hoping to see inprovements in or results from the BTD?

Certainly it is important to be following the correct BTD for your type and it is important for non-secretors to be very compliant. Hopefully you start to see results soon.

I've actually wondered the same thing...  And stuff like rice cakes, rice milk, etc...  anything rice related really messes me up for some reason.  I miss the $6 all-you-can-eat sushi bar.

The apple in the protien is Apple Fibre which is left over when the juice is extracted...ultra low in sugar and the rice protein does not contain any starch or grain...the protein is extracted rom the grain...the protein powder  has only 11g of carbohydrates, 6g of which come from the fibre with only 2g of which from sugar which is very small.

Dr D formulated these products....I think he considered non secretors carefully before he formulated them...

Thanks for all the replies.

It sounds like the problems with rice and apple are only the sugar and carbohydrates, then. If so, then can we use all products with apple fiber and rice protein? That would be nice.
(Although, doesn't banana have a lot of sugar, and it's okay?)
I also searched for agave (it's in the bars) on the values chart and couldn't find it, and there was a discussion about sweeteners for O nonnies where it was decided that vegetable glycerin was the only sweetener available to us.
The bars and protein drink are conveniences I would enjoy frequently if I got them, but I would hate to undermine the whole diet by using them if they are not really good for me.

The health issues I wanted to improve are severe allergies (to animals and house dust) and asthma; heavy bleeding at menstruation; blemish-prone skin on back, shoulders, neck, and face; and what look like flat warts along my jawline. (Sorry, you asked.)

I understood that my lungs wouldn't clear up in no time, but I got discouraged after 4 months and no improvement, especially when at that point I began wheezing lightly for days with no apparent trigger.

I sure appreciate the replies!

flutemusic, firstly, wishing you a warm welcome back to BTD and to the forum.
Since you have gotten your secretor status and are now following the correct diet, please give it the same chance you gave the secretor diet. In 4 mths, you should see some good results. I had great results within the first mth. I am a sec and we don't seem to have as many issues as nonnies but I think you will still be pleasantly surprised. As you read around the forum, you'll notice people mentioning how the got no results from following the sec diet, but once they got the test back and found out they were nonnies, then switched, they got good results. Thanks, Italybound, that was the information I was looking for -- whether others had been disappointed with the diet when following the wrong secretor status. It sounds like it's worth it to try again.

I still question whether I should get the Unibars and protein blend. Since O nonnies are supposed to have grain only 0-3/week (Rh- minus 1), I could have one unibar and one drink a week maximum anyway. Also I'm wary since some others have such trouble with grain that they avoid it completely.

Has anybody found agave nectar on the food value list? I know it's in the bars, but I want to be sure it's good for me before I get a jar of it.

Try to take good probiotics.  Plus, you don't eat any dairy at all do you?  Dairy can cause a lot of mucus stuff to go on.  I am finding I can eat brown rice when I soak it overnight in acidulated water.  Also, true sourdough leavened rice bread is working fine with me.  I had some amaranth porridge this a.m. which I soaked.  It was yummy.  

Sounds like you have leaky gut which is very tricky.  Mainly, I think probiotics, maybe colostrum, casein-free, Seacure (a fish protein product).  Omega 3 like fish oil.  I take Jarrow fish oil, and I can really tell a difference.  I don't get as stiff/hurting as I did before.

No, none when I was on the blood type diet, and none when I was a vegan for 10 years. The problem is, I can't tell whether I'm eating something good or bad for me as my problems stay the same: if I'm exposed to animal dander, I wheeze/swell/etc, whether I'm eating according to the O diet, vegan diet, or (my favorite) anything goes.
That's why I feel that I need to ask others. I'm still not giving up on the idea that diet might be a key, even though I haven't noticed any change no matter how I eat. I even tried an elimination diet.

I was on probiotics, enzymes, and Transfer Factor for four months when I was on the O (secretor) diet. But my reaction to horses, dogs, cats, etc., was unchanged.
Maybe adding the fish oil?

flutemusic, re: agave. it's considered a neutral for now. However, since Dr deemed it fit to include in the Unibars, I'd think it safe for all. That being said, please always, always, bear in mind, that we are individuals. What you see on Typebase4 and in the books are only guidelines. It is entirely possible to be allergic or intolerant of any food, even one that should be a bennie. Cassandra, the blogger, is allergic or at least intolerant, of beef. Being an O, that should be a bennie for her. We just have to listen to our bodies on everything we eat. Re: agave again. I've been using some dark agave over the past couple of days. I've been really achy and not sure why. Could be that, could be the soy, could be the new tea or even something else of which I'm not thinking. Only close attn and a little time will tell the tale.
How long have you been back on BTD? and at what rate of compliance? Please don't give up on this yet. Each person sees improvement at a dif rate, depending on their problems and the severity of same. Stick w/ us okay. We'll all help you in whatever way we can.

I have not been on the BTD the second time with any great rate of compliance. I am still casting around trying to figure out if I really want to commit another few months of inconvenience (having to bring food wherever I go, eat differently than my kids, etc.). A small price to pay if it works, I know.

One more question, and thanks for the patient and helpful replies:
How do I get to the nonnie Yahoo group? I sent a request in some time ago. Is there another way to get into the group? I was wanting to look at the recipes especially.
