Who of you 0 nonnies eats bananas?  I seem to be okay with them, but are they fattening?  Do they really raise blood sugar a whole bunch?

Hi Tina,

Bananas aren't really my friend so I tend to stick to berries/cherries as a sole fruit item.  A winter favourite is to use some frozen ones and heat them through then have them as a dessert.  Yum.  When I have pineapple, mango, etc I tend to have it with a good serving of nuts/nut butter to try and balance out my sugar levels.

Hi Tina,

I love , love, love bananas - they are like dessert for a type O....BUT I don't eat them anymore. They just don't agree with me. My body can't deal with them for some reason. They cause bloating and stomach distress to the point where I just stopped eating them.

Beause I'm in TX right now, I eat pineapple and watermelon; sometimes frozen blueberries.

not an O nonnie, but I play one on tv, from my perspective what raises blood sugar is really an individual thing and has little to do with 'gi index' frankly if you want to rely on that, bananas are lower than other fruits like pinapple, and all fruit is lower than almost any grain.  If you do well with them eat them.  Eating 8 bananas a day is fattening, eating half of one or a whole one is not.  No individual natural food is 'fattening' it all depends on who you are and your over all eating style,

besides I don't often see alot of fat monkeys roaming around

I believe the potassium contained in bananas is important to help metabolize efficiently including water retention, etc.

I always have one after workout.......
40 mins later I have my protein breakfast daily.

Nonnie-like secretor here . . . I usually end up eating two small bananas a day--one as a midmorning snack, and the other one with my meds at night. They don't jack my blood sugar up, and they don't cause cravings either. My biggest problem right now is keeping fresh ones on hand, since the hot weather always makes them ripen very quickly.

A nonnie here. I love bananas! So glad to be a nonnie.  
I have them in my smoothie in the morning. They give me energy. I notice that when I don't have them I am not as energetic as when I do.

Bananas.  I love bananas.  At least, one a day sometimes two.   Depending on what other compliant foods are in the house.   They are quite filling and satisfying for me.  When I was visiting with the BTD group in Greece, sometimes I would eat three a day.  Except for the cherries near the end of the trip there were not many bennie fruits around for me.  Hmmmmm.  Maybe that is where I lost the 12 pounds that I seemed to have found again.    Should try that again.

Oz bananas have gone up in price drastically from maybe $3 per kg to $14 per kg at the mo. I used to have them almost every day as part of breakfast (mixed fruit, or in a smoothie). Cyclone devastated our main banana growing area & prices are still very high. All the producers from other regions are riding the premium prices... Dried bananas are still at their original price, so both fresh and dried cost the same! Dried banana makes a great snack, but like all dried fruit don't overdo it.
A few years ago bananas gave me indigestion (same with watermelon) but I'm fine with both now & they are compliant to boost.

You can put them in the fridge. The skin goes ugly but the inside lasts a couple of days more. Also, they are more refreshing for summer consumption.

I have, at least, 1 a day. I love them. I fortunately live sorrounded by banana plantations

I REALLY wish I could eat them as well as other fruits but my body just does not do well at all with ANYTHING sweet, including fruits. Maybe it is the fact that I have hypoglycemia or perhaps that I am RH-. I am not sure but it really does suck.

you can also freeze banana slices and use them in your smoothies like you would ice.

I also enjoy bananas.  I like to freeze them sliced up in a baggy, than when I have a taste for ice cream I throw contents into food processor and buzz and eat with a spoon.m-m-m.

My naturopath warned me that if I wanted to lose weight to stay off the bananas. I tend to feel a bit bloated after only one a day. When I do eat them though, it is often sliced in a sandwich with Ezekial bread and almond butter.

I love prune juice, a big glass in the morning before breakfast, sometimes with one later in the day.

I used to eat them because they were so portable.  My favorite fruits are more like cherries, watermelon, peaches, etc, but those are messy & more seasonal. Bananas seem to be more available and cheaper, also.
I eat a lot of them now because they are a vehicle for my unsweetened chocolate.  They give enough sweetness so I can eat the chocolate.  I have talked about this on other threads, so won't belabor the point.
I rarely eat bananas without the chocolate!
I know I'm breaking the food combo rule with this, & I often get a coughing spell afterwards.
There's a fruit store several miles from us that has CHEAP bananas. They are often 30 something CENTS a pound! Quality varies, but what a deal!  I sure hope the crop near Australia is successful next season.  That's toooooooo much to pay!

I've read in the web that banana is the quickest food to be digested, more than any other fruit, and that it leaves the stomach in almost no time. This provided it is eaten on an empty stomach. Well, any fruit eaten on a not empty stomach would give you bloating and gas. When I was eating bananas together with or after other foods I had heartburn every time. Now I am careful to eat bananas alone and just enjoy it with no side effects.

My NP advised me the same thing, w/ an  explanation. If your adrenal glands are not working properly, fruits, not just bananas become a problem. Bananas are more of a problem because of oils. When a/g are fatigued, oils and sugars are not properly metabolized. That's what he 'splained to me.

Bananas, a blessing. Yesterday morning I had 4 (!), that's all I had at home... I was a little edgy, I didn't fell so well (better now). I am now waiting for tomorrow morning to weigh myself and see what's going on. It is said that the influence of food intake on your weight shows only after 48 hours.

The Sea Salt & Light is just my sign off phrase, but as I wrote it I added that I have added sea salt to my mixture because if I eat too much, it has lowered my pressure enough that I have felt 'woozy'!!

Sea Salt is nutrition.
Salt & Light is a Christian phrase which is what we are supposed to be (instead of being a pain in the neck like we sometimes are!!).
Sea Salt & Light is both combined.  Maybe it will make "Wheel of Fortune" someday!

What fruits do you o-nonnies eat the most of?

Bananas are fantastic and I especially love them in homemade fruit smoothies.  They are what makes a dairy-free smoothie "creamy", not to mention very tropical tasting.  I love them, love them, love them!

As for the glycemic index/blood sugar thing, while a good tool in some ways, glycemic index (GI) and even the more sophisticated glycemic load (GL) are both still reductionist measurements when compared with BTD food ratings.  So, while helpful tools to an extent, I would say never let any given food's GI or GL rating override its BTD rating!  If a food is beneficial for your type, eat and enjoy!

Howard, just remember two things:

1.  Your naturopath is coming from a non-BTD and thus reductionist perspective on bananas and weight loss, not a BTD perspective.  Again, as I just said in my previous post, bananas are a BENEFICIAL food for O's and so that rating should override what any reductionist model such as GI or GL says.

2.  If you are eating them with ezekiel bread, it is probably the ezekiel bread causing the bloated feeling.  As a nonnie, even sprouted grains can cause that feeling.  Also, have you scrutinized the ingredients on the brand of ezekiel bread you eat?  Often, brands contain avoids or unknowns that could also be the culprit, instead of the beneficial banana that you are having with it, which could be getting a bad rap!

On the first point I am happy to say that my naturopath is a big believer in blood type diets. It could be the Ezekial bread as you suggest, however, after eating a banana by itself I notice that I seem loggier and my belt feels tighter. A mystery!

Bananas are used as a staple in Kenya and neighbouring countries, where they often planted in yards and small plots of land, according to some.

As a parent, Ithink bananas are almost prefect baby food (depending on BT, of course).

After 3 days I weighed about 1/2 a pound less. After 10 days I weigh 1 kilo less. I find that eating bananas when I need them (again, just bananas on empty stomach) does not affect my weight nor cause any bloating. Love them well!

Hello,
I am new here and appreciating all the information.
When I eat only a banana, or banana with other fruit in the morning, I feel faint in the next few hours if I don't eat something else.
I'd like to be able to eat just fruit for breakfast, but I don't think I can. In the past I have always eaten cereal, toast, yogurt and other no-nos with it.

If this isn't possible, what works for an O nonsecretor to eat with fruit?
Is there a trick to making a fruit-only breakfast work?

I would think that  a "fruit only" breakfast is not your ideal meal for an O nonnie, and could kick off sugar cravings throughout the day.  It's a load of sugar at one meal, and O nonnie's don't do well with that type of meal.

You could do a smoothie, combining Dr. D's protein powder with bananas and blueberries and maybe crushed ice, and maybe some ground flax seed thrown in, and possibly lethicin. (sp?)

Consider thinking outside the box, and develop different ideas for breakfast such as beef and broccoli for breakfast.  And egg & broccoli & onion ommlet.... lamb and a kale and romain salad.

Just because we have always had a specific meal for breakfast doesn't mean we have to continue eating that way.

Thanks for the quick reply, in time for me to get to the store before work.
I am also Rh-, and was just reading in the forum that I should have less fruit anyway. Oops, sorry, that was less grains, not less fruit (from the frequency list).
I appreciate the help! It's confusing at first, especially going against long-ingrained ideas about foods.

I eat bananas nearly every day - usually combined with almonds and have no problems with them at all.

I'm not a nonnie, but being Type O Rh-, we need several more protein servings per week, and less grain.  You, less grain than me.  Celebrate your nonnie~ness!  You are in a select group!

Eat the fruit first & then eat the other foods afterwards, so you can do your fruit on an empty stomach, but being an O, go to the next foods faster than others.
Maybe as you build your health, you will tolerate the fruit better.  It's not as bad for Os as grains/starches are.
But we are all individuals, not cookie-cutters!

Ooh Boy! I LOVE bananas! So happy to find that they are ok for A nonnies. I use them to sweeten baked goods (pureed). Eat with my Ezekiel cereal/blueberries/soymilk and I'm not hungry til lunch - no problem! They are great in smoothies too.

Special note: My mom who is a B (probably secretor) had a banana and chocolate milk after giving blood. She went on a walk later that day & was so woozy she had to lay down and couldn't get back up. The people at the ER said that underripe bananas can stimulate the vagal nerve and slow down the heart. Anyone ever heard that before?

She never had problems with them before. It was most likely that she went on a strenuous walk too soon after giving blood. (She's eaten bananas her whole life.)
