This is a poll to see if there is a correlation between being a non-secretor and craving salt. Secretors can participate, too, and are encouraged to, so that we can ascertain if the instance of salt craving among respondents is about the same or any different within the two groups, secretors and nons.
Aaaand: Go/release the hounds/commence participating in the poll! |

Yes, yes, yes, yes, I crave that type of flavor too so salt, seaweed, nutritional yeast, all of which would be beneficials to me if I was a non-secretor, not that I'm bitter...............no, no bitterness here, not at all, no problems, prefectly happy secreting, sort of messier that way I keep secreting my antigen all over the place, so I have to clean more but you know, cleaning is good............dang'it, now I'm secreting on the keyboard, gotta wipe that off now........ |

Only JUST found out I'm a nonnie - so this is my first Nonnie poll vote! I'd say I love salt, but not in a life-altering way, just if I happen to come across it, I find it hard to stop if the salted item hasn't run out already... Only in my forties did I discover that if I deliberately ate extra salt & water during heat waves, I wouldn't get nauseous from the heat - better late than never, I suppose! I'll be interested to see how this poll goes, thanks for posting it, PT. |

I'm a secretor and I sometimes crave salt. I used to crave it a lot more (prior to the BTD); in fact, I used to joke that I was on the Salt Advisory Council, although I've had to give up my membership as of late. I do notice that I crave salt around my TOM, as in yesterday when I got down to the bottom of the spelt pretzel bag, there was that delicious rock salt that I love... |

I have always craved salt. My favorite ways to eat salt are on steak and on potatoes (any way, any kind). Luckily, salted steak is a beneficial for me. |

Once I knew I was a nonnie and cut out the sugar, my salt cravings increased. Used to cook with very little added salt, now add more while cooking and again on the plate, especially vegetables, but drink lots of water. |

I think that I'm a bit like you, SusieD. I rarely wanted to eat salty foods back when I ate lots of sugar and starches (I had major cravings for both back then). Now that I'm grain free and quite low carb, I tend to want to put more salt on things. Calling my increased desire for salt a craving isn't accurate for me, but this is definitely VERY different from the way that I used to be. I used to crave sugar like crazy. Pure sugar candies were my thing (e.g. jellybeans, lollipops).
I use grey sea salt on my vegetables and meats. It's amazing how different it tastes compared to 'regular' iodized salt. Iodized salt tastes so chemically to me now.

Well, results are interesting thus far! We have more nons than secretors who crave salt, but also way more nons than secretors who say they don't *lol*. I guess this could easily be a function of the fact that this is a nonnie clubhouse area, so some secretors don't check here, and/or they see something saying it is a poll on nonnie salt craving and they figure, well I'm a secretor, so I guess that poll doesn't apply to me. In other words, we might very well have way more nonnies peering in here than we do secretors, so that could skew the results. This is utterly unscientific. But fun and interesting, nonetheless. |

Well, the purpose of the poll is to determine* if there is a non-secretor link to salt cravings, but the subject line also belies that hypothesis to such a degree that secretors may not realize that they are needed as a "control", or possibly even as a surprise dark horse to be the crave-ees themselves. To the subject-line-changing-mobile, Batman! Edited to add: aaaaaand, DONE! * in a totally unscientific, impossible-to-determine-accurate-results-with way, mind you! |

I use very little salt. Both of my late husbands would grab the salt shaker and salt their food before even tasting it to see if more salt was required...perhaps that is why they are 'late'.
The only food which I want some salt on it...watermelon...

OSuzanna, very interesting finding on eating more salt to beat nausea from the heat. Great tip. Now to see if it works for me and hubby. We've been in the heat alot w/ cleaning up all the debris after the tornado strength winds that ripped thru here Friday. I'm not used to being out in it much, so it took it's toll on me. I have so much to do inside, seems like I rarely make it out. Just writing that makes me realize that needs to change. So double thanks for bring that up. Drea, that's some pretty serious salt craving if you can say "I used to joke that I was on the Salt Advisory Council !!! "I remember many years ago I had hard sourdough pretzels w/ Pepsi everyday for lunch. Don't really think you can call that a salt craving tho, as I had that sweet soda to balance it out. Pre BTD, I used to eat a lot of peanuts and raisins together. I like the sweet/salty thing more than one or the other. Laurie Adrienne, to your comment: " You're all making me kind of slobbery with your decriptions of the salty things that you like to eat." Shel, it is amazing how much dif a GOOD salt tastes. I use Himalayan salt and I too feel that it's amazing how different it tastes compared to 'regular' iodized salt and that the reg salt tastes so chemically. I just love the H. salt!! I go so far as to take my own salt when I can. H. salt has alot of good stuff in it, reg salt, zilch. Blech!!!!!!!! ruthie, my husband grabs the salt shaker and salts his food before even tasting it to see if it needs more most of the time too. I used to say "oh, I already salted that", thinking he didn't realize. He'd salt it anyway.. Now I keep it to myself - I figure he already knows. He uses more now than when first married. At least most of the salt shakers around here have good salt in them. Once in a while, I'll dump the junk he keeps in his and put the good stuff in. |

Maybe the reason folks salt their food before eating is to 'participate' more in the meal...kind of like driving stick shift. Driving is stressful enough (I avoid it & would be dangerous on the roads anyway), but some guys just love that extra action of shifting. I never liked a lot of salt until the past few years. I think the more pure foods you eat, the less added sodium there is, so you actually need salt. As kids, we had relatively few processed foods, but still ate little salt. As I got older in my 20s & early 30s I ate more junk (& more was available!) & little added salt. Wow! Now I eat what seems a lot & then my BP is low normal!! Who knows what's going on??? I am an A secretor, and I voted I crave salt. I do not believe that I overindulge in salt, but I do add one or two nice pinches of gray sea salt to almost every lunch and dinner meal. As well, I add sea salt to my water that I drink.
I do not purchase many pre-packaged products, but when I do, I tend to buy items that are salt-free and add gray sea salt to these items, if desired.

I voted yes, although craving doesn't exactly describe how I feel about salt. I never salted my food at all through my veggie days. After following BTD very closely now for a few years, I notice that I have been putting a small pinch of high quality salt in every meat dish. That's a new thing. It tastes so good, and the meat tastes much better to me this way. |

Hi all, I am a salt friend, but my parents much more than me ! I do not buy anymore salted peanuts or almonds for my snacks, I overindulge in them more than with 70 % pure extrabitter chocolate (already sweet for me)
Secretorhood will be more important than habits for salt ? May be if you overindulge in salt or sugar you want always more of them, but salt is in my opinion essential to my appetite and food enjoying. I just try to put it in the lesser amount I can like. Maria Giovanna |

I have always loved salty food, and still do. I have noticed one thing about being very compliant over these last four months, and that is that I don't crave it like I used to. Seems strange, but it is a good feeling. Also, I must throw this in, I am finally dropping some pounds. Seems like it is happening after a plateau of sorts. Not a lot, but maybe ten pounds in six weeks or so. And the good thing is that I don't feel ravenous like I used to when I was eating poorly. So patience is a plus! |

Well, sports fans, the voting is neck and neck, a real horse race!
Judging from the results thus far in our very scientific, double-blind, placebo-controlled study here, with the huge sample that we have assembled, it appears that secretor status does not bear much of a correlation to salt craving...so much for my hypothesis. |

I used to crave salt as a child, I remember begging my mother to let me suck on boullion cubes Yuck!!! Just thinking about it now.... As a teenager I did not crave salt, but then fast food was considered a good meal where, as Perpermint said in a previous post, soda and prepackaged coffee cakes would be an alternate meal. So I guess salt wasn't needed. As a young adult, I never used salt in cooking or on the table. Some times I would crave chips or smartfood popcorn, but that was usually when I was pregnant or that TOM. I started using salt in cooking a few years ago and found that small amounts actually increase the flavor of food with out making the food taste salty. On the BTD, I do add sea salt and ground kelp to food and in cooking. Sometimes just one or the other, but I would not say I crave salt at all. If I crave anything, it is wheat, or TOM I still crave chips or Smartfood popcorn. Watching reruns of Raymond can be torture during those times, !! I have never heard of the type of salts mentioned in this thread. Where would one find them? Sandy O |

I think that having more nonnies voting in does not skew the results but only makes the nonnie side more accurate in that there are more voices to be heard. Also the added salt thing. Some people learn this as small children from imitating the adults they eat with. When my kids were little and we wnent to eat at Gramma's there would be the salt and then add on. Problem solved by having no salt shakers at home but for some people it is a habit as old as toilet training. |

Sandy, At the very least, it is recommended to use sea salt with no additives. Commercial salt like Mortons is highly processed and is considered to be unusable by the body. It is blamed for raising blood pressure and causing water retention.
Do a Google search on your computer for several of the great natural salts, such as: Himalayan Crystal Salt (my fav) Celtic Sea Salt (my other fav) and someone on the Forum uses Redmond Salt
Most good natural foods stores will carry at least one of those. You can always get sea salt in a HFS, but one of the other special salts is usually sold also. I get Himalayan and Celtic at my local natural food grocers. |

The more I eat of salty things the more I seem to crave it. Most things in the U.S. are too sweet so I don't like them. But I do love sweet stuff too....Dark chocolate. Honey. It's funny that I got into pastry because I was always the salty kid - and keep me away from butter!
I notice that when I'm especially compliant that I want more sweet stuff - and then I am very happy to eat dried fruit (especially apricots & figs). |

Hi Everybody, I'm an O-nonnie and I thoroughly enjoy the Celtic grey salt. I carry it in my purse. I wouldn't enjoy food without salt. My husband and children beg me not to salt what I cook because it tastes sooooo salty to them but just right to me.
Yes, our alternative MD says that salt craving could indicate adrenal insufficiency and to go ahead and eat that salt, Lady!

I have a girlfriend (blood type unknown) who eats a TON of salt. She'll actually add salt to salted corn chips! Her husband hides the salt container at restaurants.

I have never craved salt either but I sure have craved sugar. My blood pressure is on the low side. I wonder if it would go up if I increased my salt intake. I actually prefer being able to taste the flavor of my vegetables without salt. |

A nonnie/Yes Crave didn't seem like the right word. I always thought salt was bad so I kept it's use down, but I must admit that a bag of salty whatever ( pretzels, chips, etc) could so easily be a single serving. And yes I did want to suck the salt off the pretzels & fries. So I guess it's yes.
Salt has bc important to me lately after reading the "Lemon, Salt & BM" thread. Salt seems to be linked to low blood pressure and low body temp. I am interested in your thoughts on this. |

At night I fill up an entire bowl full of salt and just pour it down my throat. I can't stop myself.
I'm kidding. I don't crave salt. |

I haven't noticed any extreme craving for salt... Maybe because I can taste the salt easier than most people, possibly.
I found out I'm a "super-taster" at IfHI. This might have something to do with it. |

Interesting! After 8+ months and an 85-person sample pool, we have nonnies with salt cravings running over 10% more than secretors with salt cravings! My hypothesis rules, wu HUUUUUUUUU! The proportion of nonnies and secretors who do NOT crave salt is dead even, which is interesting, too.
85 is a statistically small polling sample and, of course, this type of poll is unscientific, but still, I find the fact that over 10% more nons than secs crave salt to be veeeeeery interesting and illuminating.
Us ancients need our salt. You guys (secretors) can have the sugar. Give us the salt. |

Yes I crave salt. I use more on foods then before I started the BTD. The other day I was craving a salty, crunchy snack. I tried the Nori leaves but that didn't suffice. So I grabbed the salted peanuts instead. That hit the spot. |

I'm reading through the old posts and happened across this poll so I had to add my vote I don't usually have food cravings, but if I do it is always for something salty. I will even eat salt right out of the shaker on occasion. I leave the sweets to my hubby, they make me feel icky |

I crave fat in the form of nuts, avocados, olives, ... Often these foods are prepared with a lot of salt, but I really think it is the fat that I long for. The explorer diet really restricts my access to the foods I crave. |

I love salty food! I've always craved salt, but I've tried to avoid eating much of it because it's "healthy" for you (right, whatever). Then I learned about adrenal fatigue! When I started self-treatment for AF, I indulged my salt cravings whenever I had them, and I sure did have them! I'd take a pinch or two of sea salt and eat it straight. I put it on my food and in my water. Now my AF seems improved, and I don't crave salt as much as I used to.
Edit: Probably us nonnies are more susceptible to AF than secretors. |

Craving salt? Yes in my binge days... I would binge back and forth between salty and surgery. Like take a bite of a sweet chocolate and then a bite of a pretzel for instance.
Or chips with chocolate. God... the good ole' days of chips! Not really... after a bag you feel sick. I'm not one of those people who can stop at 3 or 4 chips or even a small bowl. I keep going and don't stop till I'm sick. And then I'll even eat more.
A true dis-ease. It's sad for me because I think I can have compliant treats in the house and I do ok for awhile and then a craving hits and I eat all my compliant snacks in one sitting.
So I've just been working on realizing that I'm not a normal eater and I can't have goodies around at all - compliant or not. I even binge on bananas, almonds or dates if that is what is around. I just had to stop buying the dry roasted almonds from Trader Joe's because they are like candy to me!
But salt... never really craved it when eating healthy BUT I do salt my foods and will not eat a tomato (can't eat um anyway anymore...) without salt and cannot eat eggs or meat without it. I do like it on watermelon as well!
I guess I just like it. Only when I'm out of balance with food, do I actually "crave it."
Well I'm sure this was more than anyone wanted to know! ha... |

I enjoy my sea salt more than regular iodized. After eating sea salt, than iodized salt has a nasty chemical aftertaste to me. My sea salt does have iodide in it, but only a fraction of what's in the regular salt. |

Since I discovered how different sea salt is/tastes from "table" salt, I don't restrict its use, but don't feel I overdo it. It makes me nuts when people want to season their food without even tasting it first!!! Rant over. Sigh. |

Some types of sea salt have so much flavor you don't have to add a bunch of seasonings to your dish. The bleached sea salts taste more bland to me than the colorful ones. |

I crave salty (and crunchy) food at night - between dinnertime and when I go to bed.
I wonder if it's thyroid but a recent test said "it's normal" - many thyroid tests are inaccurate though.
I know that salt makes me retain water and wish I could go minimum but food doesn't taste good without it.
I can't take Bladderwrack because even that makes me retain water. |

I don't crave salt on a regular basis, but once in a while I want something crunchy and salty or salty-sweet, probably because I'm menopausal. We use Celtic sea salt most of the time. I like the pink Himalayan salt too and use it for barbecue and pan-frying, it's delicious! |

I have not tested secretor status but I believe I am secretor. I have not voted too. I somehow has a feeling that I can do without salt. I have on occasions taken food without salt for quite some days. When the cook forgets to add salt now and then on some food, I never ever complain and enjoy it without salt rather than add salt later. |

Mmmmm - salt, salt, salt - bring it on whoo-hoo!! First vote as a nonnie and have always loved savoury/rich foods over sweet anyday! My partner also (in the old days before BTD/GTD) loved to pile salted cashews and potato chips down his gullet like each and every morsel was the last of their kind. - Bless ! AP |

Hi, I think I am a nonnie but not tested yet ; I did not vote. As a child I liked salt, but was not craving. Later, at school and in the industry, never added salt, and often forgot salt when cooking. These 3 last years I was said to think put salt in the water when cooking ! I tried to think... better and better mostly because I read something about the balance between sodium and potassium, and I used a lot organic cider vinegar (it help me to warm my cold hands and tooth in winter). Now on the diet, with algaes (fucus vesiculous harvested in Norway, 10g/day)... again, I forgot the salt !!! Worse ! I feel sick when chewing those salted pumpkin seeds !!! (I remove the salt with hot water ) |

You'll have to split those seeds open to get at the good stuff. There is one kind of pumpkin I've read about that doesn't have a thick coating on the seed. It grows naturally without it. |

I got my blood tests back last Friday. I had them & a urine test done because I thought my low temperature might be from thyroid, but I have a low sodium level. Well that explains why I crave salt even more lately. I’ve always craved salt, but it has been worse lately. The ND thinks the large amount of caffeine I drink all day long has affected my adrenal glands. So guess who has to drastically cut down on her caffeine consumption. As my glands heal, let’s see if my salt cravings decrease. |

I voted..a secretor that does not need salt! Give me sugar instead...or pepper that I cannot have! I enjoy cooking with Camargue Fleur de sel (southern France) after I have tasted... I cook with more fresh herbs from my garden than anything else. I noticed it is mostly BT O that wants the salt....my best friend is an O that is completely dependent on it! |

I did the low sodium thing for so long to control my blood pressure. When I received my lab results back in April, I discovered my sodium was 136 on the reference scale of 135-146. Since then I've re-introduced salt back into my diet and have no regrets whatsoever. |

Sometimes I crave himalayan pink salt, but it's more to do with it enhancing certain foods (love it on sardines for one ) After discovering this salt, I can't stand the taste or "saltiness" of regular salt... I love the pink salt for the flavour, not just for the saltiness... There are other times (rare) that I notice I am craving salt & then a little in a glass of water balances me... |

I voted don't crave salt. I do like salt but have been using it less due to BP, at time pressure gets a little high, I blame most of that pain and anxiety. I buy everything low or no salt so I have more control over my intake. |

I buy everything low or no salt so I have more control over my intake.
have been doing this as well because most table salt has dextrose added - and dextrose is often corn based... I found it makes a difference to me. |

I just found out my test results, I'm a nonnie I never would have guessed. I love salt and salty chips, peanuts, pretzels are the hardest things for me to resist. I alternate between salt and chocolate and there is even one chocolate bar made by Lindt that has sea salt in it. I thought that was weird but it tasted great. |

couldn't craving salt be an adrenal problem? |

I love that sea salt chocolate bar by Lindt. I love the orange one, too, but that is an avoid now. |

It seems that I can't taste anything unless I put an ample amount ..and I mean 'ample' on all of my food...and I have very low blood pressure sometimes..perhaps my body is telling me something? |

hope it is sea salt you add and not table salt, which in fact is known to contain dextrose as a non caking agent
derived from corn, not a good thing being a nonnie or a B |

Hello Everyone I am new here as I'm sure you can see, lol. I just got measured up and tested by my sister who just graduated from the University of Bridgeport Naturopathic school and will be getting her doctors license in August. She put all the info in and SWAMI says I am an Explorer (didn't get the %) and a nonnie. I have been on the BTD for 2 weeks and all my cravings for salt and sweets have left. To me this is amazing since all my life I have craved sweets and salt. Now I have no cravings whatsoever, NONE. I am completely amazed! Has anyone else found their cravings stopped once fully on the diet? |

I didn't read through this so this may have already been said, but I would think more nonnies would have adrenal problems and therefore be more likely to crave salt. |

Welcome wondering... I love SWAMI too. Do I understand you to say that SWAMI says you're a Non-secretor? Because you have to do a specific test for that one: http://www.4yourtype.com/prodinfo.asp?number=TE002Maybe I misunderstood. Glad you're liking the diet and seeing such great results to... |

Before BTD I loved potato chips but never liked them too salty. Even right before the BTD I always looked for snacks with minimal salt. As long as it had a hint of salt I was fine.
Now I have to admit even though sea salt (which I only use) is still salt I have developed a technique where I hold the shaker in the middle and give it one quick shake on the food. That's it; most of the time. I still think alot of food tastes better with a smidgen of salt but not all. I've learned to enjoy the actual flavor of alot foods without any salt. Since I've built up a catalog of spices I'm learning to rely on them more and more for taste. Still learning to be an A.

I don't like food that tastes very salty. I am a secretor and used to crave sweets before following BTD/GTD. The only food I love that is probably considered salty is cheese. Give me a spicy ginger snap over a (yuck) potato chip any day! |

Whew!!!! Potato chips (which I don't consume since being on the BTD) are favorite snackfoods outside the BTD.
Love ginger snaps myself as long as they are not too snappy.

Yes, SWAMI came up stating I am a Non-secretor due to all the measurements and answers to questions put in at the start. My sister left my secretor status as "floating" because it was unknown. Is SWAMI not supposed to determine secretor status? I knew of the test and was going to purchase it, but when SWAMI came up stating I was a "nonnie" I held off on getting the test done. |

Just curious as to why more nonnies than secretors would have adrenal problems? I am currently working on helping my adrenals get back up and running fully, but my salt cravings stopped before my adrenal work/as soon as I started the BTD/GTD, so it appears my salt craving was more diet based than adrenal based but there are so many factors so who knows. This is fascinating stuff! |

I am not sure what my Secretor status is yet, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sea Salt. May sound weird but I like to put it on ice and eat it! I don't do it often, but when I want something salty and really don't want the calories I just put it on ice cubes. |

Hi, I think i have salt cravings after sugar cravings. (lots of bananas ) I like the salty taste but i don't like burning mouth. I use Himalayan pink salt since years. Love it. But i don't use a lot, just a pinch. Bye |

Given the small sample size, we can't jump to big conclusions. Within each group (secretors and non-secretors) the salty taste is enjoyed. It looks like people clicked "crave salt" who don't necessarily crave it, but simply prefer it to, say, the sweet taste. I am someone who did not participate because I don't crave salt, though I gravitate toward salty rather than sweet snacks. I don't oversalt my food, for instance, and I do notice when food is far too salty for me.
At the moment, the margin is wider for nonnies. Among this forum's respondents, Secretors appear to prefer the salty taste at about 1.5 to 1, while nonnies do at about 1.9 to 1. |

Years ago when I did crave salt and was not eating meat, the naturopath said when someone craves salt, it is because they need protein. I would eat a piece of cheese, chicken or fish and it would leave.
Now what I do enjoy is having salt and sugar in my mouth at the same time. Think a bite of a chocolate bar with a handful of potato chips at the movie theatre!!! (BTW, haven't done this in years).
Last night we ate at a friend's and had a gluten-free chocolate cake with icing from a mix. I don't know if she realized that she had used salted butter but the salt flavour came through and I absolutely loved it with the sugar. When baking you are told never to use salted butter, and I never have, but man that was good. I don't eat butter, usually only ghee and I was astounded at how isolated the butter flavour was as well. |

A salt craving can also indicate a need for iodine... Again, individuality plays a part. |

Well that makes sense! It was interesting to note that Ribbit mentioned that her thyroid healed from BTD and she only had to take meds to stop her hair falling out during pregnancies. |
