This is a poll to see if there is a correlation between being a non-secretor and craving salt. Secretors can participate, too, and are encouraged to, so that we can ascertain if the instance of salt craving among respondents is about the same or any different within the two groups, secretors and nons.
Aaaand: Go/release the hounds/commence participating in the poll!

Yes, yes, yes, yes, I crave that type of flavor too so salt, seaweed, nutritional yeast, all of which would be beneficials to me if I was a non-secretor, not that I'm bitter...............no, no bitterness here, not at all, no problems, prefectly happy secreting, sort of messier that way I keep secreting my antigen all over the place, so I have to clean more but you know, cleaning is good............dang'it, now I'm secreting on the keyboard, gotta wipe that off now........

Only JUST found out I'm a nonnie - so this is my first Nonnie poll vote! I'd say I love salt, but not in a life-altering way, just if I happen to come across it, I find it hard to stop if the salted item hasn't run out already... Only in my forties did I discover that if I deliberately ate extra salt & water during heat waves, I wouldn't get nauseous from the heat - better late than never, I suppose! I'll be interested to see how this poll goes, thanks for posting it, PT.

I'm a secretor and I sometimes crave salt. I used to crave it a lot more (prior to the BTD); in fact, I used to joke that I was on the Salt Advisory Council, although I've had to give up my membership as of late. I do notice that I crave salt around my TOM, as in yesterday when I got down to the bottom of the spelt pretzel bag, there was that delicious rock salt that I love...
Well, at least I see I'm not alone in craving salt! You're all making me kind of slobbery with your decriptions of the salty things that you like to eat....
I have always craved salt. My favorite ways to eat salt are on steak and on potatoes (any way, any kind). Luckily, salted steak is a beneficial for me.
Once I knew I was a nonnie and cut out the sugar, my salt cravings increased. Used to cook with very little added salt, now add more while cooking and again on the plate, especially vegetables, but drink lots of water.
Non-secretors have to work twice as hard to get half as far...SusieD
I think that I'm a bit like you, SusieD. I rarely wanted to eat salty foods back when I ate lots of sugar and starches (I had major cravings for both back then). Now that I'm grain free and quite low carb, I tend to want to put more salt on things. Calling my increased desire for salt a craving isn't accurate for me, but this is definitely VERY different from the way that I used to be. I used to crave sugar like crazy. Pure sugar candies were my thing (e.g. jellybeans, lollipops).
I use grey sea salt on my vegetables and meats. It's amazing how different it tastes compared to 'regular' iodized salt. Iodized salt tastes so chemically to me now.

Well, results are interesting thus far! We have more nons than secretors who crave salt, but also way more nons than secretors who say they don't *lol*. I guess this could easily be a function of the fact that this is a nonnie clubhouse area, so some secretors don't check here, and/or they see something saying it is a poll on nonnie salt craving and they figure, well I'm a secretor, so I guess that poll doesn't apply to me. In other words, we might very well have way more nonnies peering in here than we do secretors, so that could skew the results. This is utterly unscientific. But fun and interesting, nonetheless.

The title of the thread "Poll: nons and salt craving" suggests that it's just for nonnies too. I almost didn't read it.
Well, the purpose of the poll is to determine* if there is a non-secretor link to salt cravings, but the subject line also belies that hypothesis to such a degree that secretors may not realize that they are needed as a "control", or possibly even as a surprise dark horse to be the crave-ees themselves. To the subject-line-changing-mobile, Batman!
Edited to add: aaaaaand, DONE!
* in a totally unscientific, impossible-to-determine-accurate-results-with way, mind you!

I use very little salt. Both of my late husbands would grab the salt shaker and salt their food before even tasting it to see if more salt was required...perhaps that is why they are 'late'.
The only food which I want some salt on it...watermelon...
OSuzanna, very interesting finding on eating more salt to beat nausea from the heat. Great tip. Now to see if it works for me and hubby. We've been in the heat alot w/ cleaning up all the debris after the tornado strength winds that ripped thru here Friday. I'm not used to being out in it much, so it took it's toll on me. I have so much to do inside, seems like I rarely make it out. Just writing that makes me realize that needs to change. So double thanks for bring that up.
Drea, that's some pretty serious salt craving if you can say "I used to joke that I was on the Salt Advisory Council !!! "I remember many years ago I had hard sourdough pretzels w/ Pepsi everyday for lunch. Don't really think you can call that a salt craving tho, as I had that sweet soda to balance it out. Pre BTD, I used to eat a lot of peanuts and raisins together. I like the sweet/salty thing more than one or the other.

Shel, it is amazing how much dif a GOOD salt tastes. I use Himalayan salt and I too feel that it's amazing how different it tastes compared to 'regular' iodized salt and that the reg salt tastes so chemically. I just love the H. salt!! I go so far as to take my own salt when I can. H. salt has alot of good stuff in it, reg salt, zilch. Blech!!!!!!!!
ruthie, my husband grabs the salt shaker and salts his food before even tasting it to see if it needs more most of the time too. I used to say "oh, I already salted that", thinking he didn't realize. He'd salt it anyway.. Now I keep it to myself - I figure he already knows. He uses more now than when first married. At least most of the salt shakers around here have good salt in them. Once in a while, I'll dump the junk he keeps in his and put the good stuff in.

Maybe the reason folks salt their food before eating is to 'participate' more in the meal...kind of like driving stick shift. Driving is stressful enough (I avoid it & would be dangerous on the roads anyway), but some guys just love that extra action of shifting. I never liked a lot of salt until the past few years. I think the more pure foods you eat, the less added sodium there is, so you actually need salt. As kids, we had relatively few processed foods, but still ate little salt. As I got older in my 20s & early 30s I ate more junk (& more was available!) & little added salt. Wow! Now I eat what seems a lot & then my BP is low normal!! Who knows what's going on??? I like salt. My hubby has asked that I not salt food during cooking as I tend to over salt for him. He's a B-Sec.

I am an A secretor, and I voted I crave salt. I do not believe that I overindulge in salt, but I do add one or two nice pinches of gray sea salt to almost every lunch and dinner meal. As well, I add sea salt to my water that I drink.
I do not purchase many pre-packaged products, but when I do, I tend to buy items that are salt-free and add gray sea salt to these items, if desired.

I voted yes, although craving doesn't exactly describe how I feel about salt. I never salted my food at all through my veggie days. After following BTD very closely now for a few years, I notice that I have been putting a small pinch of high quality salt in every meat dish. That's a new thing. It tastes so good, and the meat tastes much better to me this way.

Hi all, I am a salt friend, but my parents much more than me ! I do not buy anymore salted peanuts or almonds for my snacks, I overindulge in them more than with 70 % pure extrabitter chocolate (already sweet for me)
Secretorhood will be more important than habits for salt ? May be if you overindulge in salt or sugar you want always more of them, but salt is in my opinion essential to my appetite and food enjoying. I just try to put it in the lesser amount I can like. Maria Giovanna
I have always loved salty food, and still do. I have noticed one thing about being very compliant over these last four months, and that is that I don't crave it like I used to. Seems strange, but it is a good feeling. Also, I must throw this in, I am finally dropping some pounds. Seems like it is happening after a plateau of sorts. Not a lot, but maybe ten pounds in six weeks or so. And the good thing is that I don't feel ravenous like I used to when I was eating poorly. So patience is a plus!
