Egads and gadzooks!  Nonnies are only about 15% of the total population right? Says so right here:  http://www.dadamo.com/wiki/wiki.pl/Secretor_Status.  Well, if this article (linked below) is to be believed, the number is actually a whooping 20%, 5% higher!  We are 1 out of every 5 people or, if my math is right (lol), the aforementioned 20% of the totality of humankind!  That means that "merely" 80% of the general population are secretors, not 85%!  Ha!  We're gaining on them!  There are 5% more of us than previously estimated!  Wu HUUUU.  Watch out secretors, we're everywhere, and we don't leave a trace!  Muah!  Muah ha HAAAAAAA!

"...forensic experts now know that one of every five people is a non-secretor, hardly the small percentage of the population once believed to share that trait."

Well, it's actually only a 5% difference, so it isn't really significant, I guess, since it is all approximate anyway, but I, too, found it interesting that it is 5% more versus 5% less.  1 in 5.  Not too shabby, as what's-his-face...Adam Sandler...would say.

I could swear I remember Dr. D saying at one time that nonnies are 15 TO 20% of the population.....

Yeah, and the wiki reference says "about" 15%, so 20% is "about" 15%, if'n ya think about it.  Still, 20% seems like we're so much less of a freak of nature, huh?

btw, I tend to go by this site if there is any sort of even slightly differing info. floatin' around out there in cyberspace.  So, if I were to tell someone how many nons are out and about in the world, I would probably say "approximately 15%, maybe as much as 20%".

Still, those secretors are at least 80% of the human race, and probably more like 85%.  Secreting must provide the secretor with a lot of benefits, to have gained such striking evolutionary prominence.

Sorry to thwart your new career in crime, Isa, but they have DNA tests now -- I think those can identify anyone.

Edna, an increase from 15% to 20% is an increase of 5 percentage points, but it's technically not a 5% increase, it's a 25% increase (because 5 is 25% of 20).  You're right, though, it's not a major increase, especially since the original figure was stated to be approximate.

EDITED TO ADD:  Note to those who see the flaw in my arithmetic -- please see my next post.  I really do know better, honest!

Huh?    Does this have anything to do with Monty Hall again?  D*mn him!

Laura, I suddenly envisioned the perfect avatar/personal message field combo to express your Lauraness with pinpoint accuracy!

1.  Select the Type A avatar that does not say either "secretor" or "non"; and then
2.  Type underneath it (in the personal message field):  "Secretor Lite"

*Tee hee*!  ...Well, I think it is cute, anyway.

Eek!  I hope not!  That sort of psychological probability theory is either way over my head or a lot of hooey -- I have no idea which (and don't too much care).

No, this one is just simple math.  Or it would be if I had gotten my figures straight.  I should have said that it's a 33-1/3% increase.

Suppose there are 15 non-secretors in a room, and 5 more non-secretors walk in.  That's an increase of 33-1/3%, right?

It's really more a matter of terminology.  The extra 5% is, as I mentioned, an increase of 5 percentage points.  But that's not the same thing as a 5% increase.

You have TOTALLY lost me, girl.  And I know Monty Hall is behind this somehow!

Nope, just basic old-fashioned statistics.  None of that thar fancy post-modern stuff.

OK, back to those 15 nonnies in a room.  Do you agree that if 5 more nonnies walk in, that's an increase of 33-1/3%?

But when I say 15% of all people are nonnies, or 20% of all people are nonnies, I'm talking about 15% out of a total of 100%, or 20% out of a total of 100%, therefore, the difference between the 15% and the 20% is 5%, no?

Girl, you make my head spin!!!  But that's okay, I love ya anyway!  I can use some shaking up sometimes.  For now, though, I must be on my bike, as the Brits say, as in, outta here, gone, and into the intense electric storm going on outside, so I'll leave you and Monty to come up with further ways to confound me manana *lol*!

(hug!)

In any technical field, the terminology tends to be used in ways that are somewhat different from what most people would mean.  Like when a doctor talks about an "event," it's not usually something that you'd like to be invited to!

So I agree with your last point -- it's nothing to worry about!
